The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockpapershotgun.com\/ea-expect-their-55-billion-sale-to-saudi-arabia-and-private-equity-firms-to-close-next-week-with-all-regulatory-approvals-required-in-place\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publishers sold to executioners<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockpapershotgun.com\/our-business-did-not-grow-with-our-audience-post-layoffs-xbox-execs-are-trying-to-sell-a-gaming-division-bounce-back-by-summer-2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">naked attempts at thought manipulation<\/a>. The constant, miserable hum of distrust and paranoia produced by a technology that even bedroom modders, once the poster children of earnest DIY enthusiasm, are now using to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockpapershotgun.com\/halo-on-helium-has-arrived-less-than-a-week-after-modders-got-their-hands-on-campaign-evolved-just-in-case-you-prefer-chipmunked-chief-and-cortana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut corners and mislead players<\/a>. God, it&#8217;s awful.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, in honour of my dire need to spend this weekend thinking about something else \u2013 hopefully that being enough time to reset and rediscover some of the medium\u2019s lingering pleasures \u2013 here are some quality reads from the past week, absolutely none of which concern games.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First up, by Linni Kral for Taste magazine, <a href=\"https:\/\/tastecooking.com\/this-too-shall-pass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an article about bowel movements<\/a>. Which, mercifully, turns into a rather lovely expression of the joy of food.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To eat is to be curious\u2014to explore, transform, ferment, decay. So eat what you have. Bloat a little sometimes. Your gut isn\u2019t clean, and it\u2019s not supposed to be, so let it be dirty. Don\u2019t overcomplicate one of life\u2019s purest pleasures out of anxiety over the things you can\u2019t control.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Also on a food note, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/trends\/975087\/restaurants-lean-into-bespoke-handmade-elements-during-ai-flyer-backlash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eater\u2019s Bettina Makalintal<\/a> looks at the restaurants rejecting AI-belched menus and marketing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>More and more, I\u2019m stopped in my scroll by something that evokes the opposite feeling: a kind of semi-defeated revulsion, which I attribute to the barrage of images that bear the grotesque hallmarks of being AI-generated. They are the opposite of handcrafted, often riddled with errors that only a technology without real human experiences would make: the sandwiches that defy gravity; the cocktails in glasses that cast physically impossible shadows; the flyers for events at restaurants that are so overstuffed and overstylized that they\u2019ve almost come full circle into camp; the fantastical scenes, like a cat holding two tacos, which would be cute if dreamed up by an illustrator but which instead feel cynical and smug in one\u2019s absence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you\u2019re not into football, first off, well done, I\u2019m jealous. You may also have missed how its global governing body attempted to chop up and sell chunks of itself to Trump underlings. A laughably evil and, unusually for evil things in 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/articles\/czekr6kn58po\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soundly rejected<\/a> proposal that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/fifa-josh-kushner-thrive-capital-infantino-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mother Jones\u2019 Tim Murphy skilfully picks apart here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The proposal, which Infantino reportedly cooked up without much, if any, consultation from other high-ranking officials, also amounts to a potential golden parachute for the Swiss-Italian bureaucrat. Infantino would be term-limited after his expected re-election next year. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7477045\/2026\/07\/29\/fifa-world-cup-stake-sale-analysis\/?unlocked_article_code=1.1lA.CqlX.X2j-Rsd_k8q1&amp;source=emp_shared_article&amp;smid=ta-ios-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Athletic<\/a>, the deal would create a new position, analogous to an NFL commissioner, with pay in the range of roughly $60 million a year, and which Infantino would be expected to fill. If that were to happen, Infantino would end up making orders of magnitude more money out of this deal than the soccer federations it purports to enrich.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nathan Goldwag asks: <a href=\"https:\/\/nathangoldwag.wordpress.com\/2026\/07\/28\/did-odysseus-cause-the-bronze-age-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did Odysseus cause the Bronze Age Collapse<\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nolan isn\u2019t making a &#8222;historically accurate&#8220; version of The Odyssey. There is no attempt here to depict any realistic version of Late Mycenaean civilization\u2014correctly so, given how little we know of it. But it is an attempt to capture a <em>feeling<\/em>, an <em>idea<\/em>, a sense of history, a moment in time and myth where the fog parts, and you can see the whirlpool ahead. One can imagine the horror of Achaean sea-wolves, returning home from another voyage of plunder, and finding their <em>megaron <\/em>burning, or the despair in some town when the trading vessels simply never come one year, or the grim fear in the citadels of Hattusa or Memphis or Mycenae, as word of burned cities creeps every closer with each traveler\u2019s tale.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagolandarchitecture.substack.com\/p\/the-robert-silhan-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here\u2019s architectural journalist Rachel Freundt<\/a> on a very unique Chicago house.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Coincidentally, the current owners, who are vintage enthusiasts, had been interested in leasing one of the world\u2019s fair homes in Indiana, now owned by the National Park Service (NPS) and managed in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianalandmarks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indiana Landmarks<\/a>. The homes are subleased to private residents for restoration and maintenance. The couple lacked the financial resources to undertake such a project. However, fate intervened. Over twenty-five years ago, after typing in the wrong zip code, they came across the real estate listing for the house in Berwyn. Suspecting it might be a world\u2019s fair home, they consulted the archives at Marshall University and realized its layout didn\u2019t match historical records. Yet, they recognized &#8222;the spirit of its design.&#8220; It was only after purchasing the property and meeting Silhan\u2019s son and other family members, that the couple learned the home was not a prototype or display, but was an original design inspired by the 1933 Century of Progress.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This one\u2019s probably best without an explanation: <a href=\"https:\/\/sarahkendzior.substack.com\/p\/quicksand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Kendzior on quicksand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Before his death set off the apocalypse in January 2016, David Bowie, star of <em>Labyrinth,<\/em> sang a song called &#8222;Quicksand&#8220;:<\/p>\n<p><em>Don\u2019t believe in yourself\/Don\u2019t deceive with belief\/ Knowledge comes with death\u2019s release\/ Ah-ah-ah-ah\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowie didn\u2019t tell us we\u2019d be alive to watch the extinction racket.
