EmDash for Beginners: How to Write Your First Post and Publish It

A step-by-step guide to writing and publishing your first post on EmDash CMS using the free playground.

By Central
EmDash CMS offers a block editor and one-click publishing, similar to WordPress but with modern features.
Highlights
  • The EmDash playground lets you spin up a working site in under a minute with no server setup.
  • EmDash stores content as structured JSON, making it reusable across apps and platforms.
  • Passkey authentication is the default login method, eliminating the need for passwords.

EmDash CMS is Cloudflare’s new open‑source content management system. It runs on TypeScript and Astro, and it’s designed to feel familiar if you’ve used WordPress. The playground at emdashcms.com lets you spin up a working site in under a minute. No server setup, no database config. Just click, and you’re editing.

This guide walks you through writing your first post and publishing it. You’ll use the playground, so you can follow along right now.

One thing that sets EmDash apart from WordPress: content is stored as structured JSON (portable text), not HTML.

Getting Started: Create a Playground Site

Open your browser and go to emdashcms.com/playground. The page loads a full EmDash instance that lasts one hour. You can break anything — no one else sees it.

After a few seconds, you’ll see the admin dashboard. It looks a lot like WordPress, but cleaner. The sidebar has sections for Content, Manage, Admin, and Settings. Click Posts under Content.

Writing Your First Post

Click the Add New Post button. A blank editor opens. Here’s what you’ll see:

  • Title field at the top. Type “Hello, EmDash World”.
  • Content area below it. This is a block editor, similar to Gutenberg. You can write text, add headings, insert images, and create lists.
  • Right sidebar with fields for categories, tags, featured image, SEO title and description, and a byline (author). Most of these are optional for now.

Type a few sentences in the content area. For example: “This is my first post in EmDash. The editor supports bold, italic, links, and block quotes. Try adding a bullet list.”

The editor saves automatically. You’ll see a “Saved” indicator appear after a few seconds. There’s no manual save button — changes are debounced and written to the database.

In the right sidebar, click the Featured Image area. A media picker opens. You can upload a local image or reuse one already in the library. For this demo, upload a small photo from your computer. The image is stored in Cloudflare’s R2 storage — no file‑system overhead.

Publishing the Post

When you’re happy with the content, look at the top‑right corner of the editor. There’s a Publish button with a dropdown arrow.

  1. Click the dropdown arrow. You can choose Publish Now or Schedule (set a future date and time).
  2. Select Publish Now. A green confirmation bar appears: “Post published successfully.”

That’s it. Your post is live. To see it, click the View Site button in the top bar. The front‑end of your site loads, and your new post appears in the blog listing.

Previewing Before You Publish

You can preview a draft without publishing. In the editor, click the Preview button. A new tab opens showing the post as it will appear on the live site. Draft content is rendered from the database in real time. You can go back, edit, and preview again. When you’re satisfied, hit Publish.

EmDash vs WordPress vs Static Site: First Post Experience

Task EmDash (playground) WordPress (fresh install) Static site (Astro + Markdown)

Editor features Block editor with text, images, headings, lists, links, quotes Block editor (Gutenberg) with similar blocks Markdown file in a code editor; no WYSIWYG by default
Publishing workflow One‑click Publish button; supports scheduling One‑click Publish or schedule; revisions built‑in Git commit + deploy via CI; no scheduling without plugins

Tips for Beginners

  • The playground resets after one hour. If you want to keep a site, deploy EmDash to your own Cloudflare account (paid plan starts at $5/month) or run it locally with Node.js.
  • EmDash includes built‑in SEO fields. Fill in the title and meta description for every post — they help search engines understand your content.
  • Passkey authentication is the default login method. No passwords to remember or leak. On the playground, your passkey is stored in your browser.

One thing that sets EmDash apart from WordPress: content is stored as structured JSON (portable text), not HTML. That means you can reuse the same content in a mobile app, an email newsletter, or an API without parsing markup. For a beginner, this doesn’t change how you write — but it means your content is future‑proof.
