Amazon Invests €15 Billion in French Infrastructure and Jobs

Amazon has announced a monumental €15 billion investment into the French economy, a three-year commitment designed to dramatically expand its logistics and technological footprint within the country. This initiative marks the company’s most substantial pledge to France in over two decades and underscores its strategic focus on strengthening its European supply chain. The investment will primarily fund the construction of four new distribution centers and the enhancement of existing infrastructure, aiming to create a denser, more efficient network.

Boosting Logistics and Delivery Networks

The €15 billion will be strategically deployed across the French market, beginning with the opening of distribution centers in Illiers-Combray, Beauvais, and Colombier-Saugnieu this year, followed by another in Ennisheim in 2025. These facilities are central to Amazon’s goal of accelerating delivery times for both customers and the tens of thousands of French small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that sell on its platform. Jean-Baptiste Thomas, Amazon’s Country Manager in France, emphasized that this logistics expansion will result in faster deliveries, a wider product selection, and lower prices accessible across the entire country, all while aiming to reduce the environmental impact through a proximity-based network.

Creating Jobs and Supporting Economic Growth

A significant outcome of this investment is the creation of more than 7,000 new permanent jobs, primarily in warehouse and logistics roles. Amazon asserts its position as France’s leading net direct job creator since 2010, currently supporting over 25,000 permanent employees and more than 100,000 total jobs in the country. This job creation is intrinsically linked to the growth of the e-commerce ecosystem, as the robust logistics network enables thousands of French SMEs to reach customers both domestically and across Europe via Amazon’s marketplace.

Accelerating a Long-Term Commitment

This new €15 billion pledge accelerates Amazon’s already considerable investment history in France. Since 2010, the company has injected over €30 billion into the nation’s infrastructure, technology, and operations. The new commitment raises the average annual investment from roughly €2 billion to €5 billion, signaling a new phase of aggressive growth. Part of these funds will also be directed toward developing Amazon’s cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities within France, highlighting a dual focus on both physical logistics and advanced digital services for the future.

A Broader European Investment Strategy

This move is part of a larger pattern of significant capital injections by Amazon across Europe, as it seeks to fortify its market position against regional competitors. Recent announcements include investments of over €1 billion in Belgium, more than €1.4 billion in the Netherlands—where it competes with Bol.com—and a substantial €5 billion planned for Poland through 2028 to challenge local leader Allegro. The scale of the French investment, however, is particularly notable, reflecting the strategic importance of the market where Amazon, since its 2000 launch, has grown to become the country’s largest online retailer.
