Control Resonant: Free Upgrade Materials – Where to Find Them

Learn the secret zones, vending machines, and timing cycles to farm free upgrade materials efficiently in Control Resonant.

Discover how to exploit zone resets and vending machines for rare upgrade materials without spending source.
Highlights
  • World feats refresh after every resonant boss, allowing repeated material farming at increasing difficulty.
  • Vending machines with red flashing lights drop source and reset items when attacked and respawn each cycle.
  • Large resource crates respawn after zone resets and contain rare materials like Aberrant Slivers and Patterned Thoughts.

You already know you can smash crates and kill Hiss for materials. That’s the slow path. The fast path—the one the game never explains—depends on understanding how the zone reset economy works, which hidden sources refill every cycle, and why you should never waste a vending machine.

The best free upgrade materials in Control Resonant come from three sources: world feats, hidden storefront puzzles, and vending machine fights – but the timing of collecting them around resonant cycles is what separates efficient players from those who grind needlessly.

The non-obvious move: never kill a resonant until you've cleared every world feat in every zone you can currently reach.

The Zone Reset Economy – Why Timing Matters

Every time you defeat a resonant boss, every zone’s enemies respawn tougher, new enemy types appear, and—crucially—all world feats refresh. World feats (white icons: Apex Hunts, Hiss Hives, Hold the Line) are the single most efficient source of zone XP, and zone XP is the only way to earn talent points. But more importantly, zone leveling unlocks rewards that directly feed your material economy: increased resource drops from enemies, expanded vendor stock, and—at level 6 in most zones—the ability to see large resource crates on your map.

The non-obvious move: never kill a resonant until you’ve cleared every world feat in every zone you can currently reach. Each world feat yields materials on completion. After the reset, those feats reappear at a higher difficulty, but you can farm them again for more materials. If you rush three or four resonants back-to-back without stopping to clear feats, you permanently lose the chance to earn those materials at lower difficulty levels—and you’ll run out of feats to level late-game zones.

Vending Machines Are Source Piñatas (and Reset Item Farms)

The vending machines with the red flashing lights aren’t just environmental jokes. They’re Hiss enemies that, when attacked, sprint away while spitting upgrade materials. Eliminate them and you get:

  • 1,000+ source per machine
  • A high chance of a reset item (the resource used to respec abilities, talents, or aberrant forms)

There are multiple vending machines scattered across Manhattan. One reliable spawn is just south of the Oldest House in Central, near a wall. Another sits in the West Incursion Zone parking garage area. Because the machines respawn after each resonant cycle, you can farm them repeatedly. Reset items cost 1,500 source at vendors—vending machines give you both the source and the item itself for free.

The Hidden Cycle of Large Resource Crates

Large resource crates (the ones with an ice cream cone icon above them) contain rare upgrade materials like Aberrant Slivers, Patterned Thoughts, and Aberrant Remnants. They’re spread across every zone, but the game only marks them on your map after you reach a certain zone level (usually level 6). Before that, you’re hunting blind.

The trick: these crates respawn every resonant cycle, just like world feats. So once you’ve unlocked the map marker ability for a zone, you can clear all crates before a resonant cycle, then kill the boss, and the crates will be back. This is the only renewable source of high-tier materials in the game—standard resource crates do not respawn.

To speed up locating them, use the zone details screen (open map, select zone, scroll down). The level-up rewards list will tell you exactly what you unlock at each threshold. Prioritize zones where the level-6 reward is “Mark large resource crates on map.”

Storefront Puzzles – Six Basements You Can’t Afford to Miss

Across Manhattan, six unassuming storefronts—a diner, a laundromat, an art gallery, a convenience store, a pizza place, and a grocery store—each contain a puzzle that opens a hidden basement. Every basement has a health upgrade point or a power upgrade point. Collect three of either to permanently boost Dylan’s stats.

The puzzles are cryptic (notes inside the building clue you in), but the materials reward is flat: each basement also contains a large resource crate. These basements do not reset after resonant cycles, so get them all early. The diner puzzle near the Oldest House requires turning on power then activating appliances from smallest to largest—a common pattern across similar puzzles.

The practitioner’s edge: use the dog quest. Find the dog on a rooftop in Central (southwest of the Oldest House). Return its toy (on the next rooftop) to start a chain that moves the dog to every zone. Each time you reunite them, the dog gives you a health element and a bundle of upgrade materials. The final reward is an artifact called the puppy collar, but the materials from each step are more immediately useful.

World Feat Material Drops – Which Ones to Prioritize

Not all world feats are equal for materials. Hiss Hives (the ones where you destroy nests) drop the most Aberrant Splinters per minute. Hold the Line encounters (escort FBC troopers) drop both source and Corrupted Elements. Apex Hunts (single powerful enemies) often drop an Aberrant Fragment on kill. Focus your time on Hives and Hunts when you need specific upgrade tiers.

One more note: grunt enemies drop no materials. Only heavies (the larger Hiss with health bars containing armor or shield icons) and named enemies yield upgrade resources. If you’re farming, ignore grunts entirely and dodge through them to reach the heavy. The time spent killing grunts returns nothing.

The Exchange Recents Loophole

When you unlock a new weapon form or combo finisher in the Gap, you can immediately test it in the practice arena. While still in the Gap, the “Exchange Recents” function refunds the spent living shards, letting you try every option without cost. This is not a permanent unlock—you lose the weapon if you leave the Gap without confirming—but it lets you verify which form’s material requirements align with your current inventory before committing.

Plan your unlocks around what you can actually afford to upgrade. If you have 20 Aberrant Splinters but zero Patterned Thoughts, pick a weapon form whose first few nodes use Splinters. That way you immediately boost Aberrant Strength without hunting for rare materials.

Free Living Shards Without Spending Source

Living shards are the rarest non-renewable resource, costing 4,000 source each at vendors. But you can get them for free from two sources:

  1. Main story missions – major story beats always reward a living shard.
  2. Defeating resonant bosses – each boss drops one.

There are exactly enough free shards from bosses to unlock every primary and secondary form, every combo finisher, and max out your primary tree. Do not spend source on vendor shards unless you absolutely need one more shard to unlock a +5 Aberrant Strength node and you have source to spare. Otherwise, save your source for faction-specific materials you can’t easily grind.

The Final Piece of Non-Obvious Advice

The fastest way to drain your resources is buying materials piecemeal from vendors to complete a single upgrade node. Instead, wait until you’ve reset a zone twice. After the second reset, the zone level increases vendor stock—sometimes offering rare materials like Aberrant Remnants that rarely drop from enemies. Then buy in bulk once, not in singles every ten minutes.

Also: revisit the prologue boss arena after the opening credits. There’s a power upgrade point there that most players miss. Return to the room where you fought the Artist—you’ll find it even though the game never sends you back.
