Spore Burst turns Dylan’s hand into a rapid-fire mold projector. It’s one of two abilities you pick after beating the park resident boss, and it plays completely differently from its alternative, Growth (the summon turret). Where Growth puts up a stationary ally, Spore Burst lets you hose enemies with infected status projectiles from range. Here’s exactly how to get it and what it does.
How to Unlock Spore Burst
You fight the park resident in The Park zone. This zone is available after you reach Central Manhattan and progress the main story enough to unlock the other regions. The park resident’s arena is marked on your map once you activate the zone’s radar. You need to defeat this boss to unlock either Spore Burst or Growth.

Before committing, use the Gap’s arena. After the boss fight, you’ll be taken to the ability selection screen in the Gap. You can choose either ability, then test it against the training dummy. If you don’t like it, exchange it for the other option for free. The exchange only works while you’re still in the Gap — leaving the Gap locks your choice. Reset items (bought for 5,000 souls from vendors or dropped by vending machines) let you change later, but they’re finite.
Unlock step-by-step:
- Complete the prologue and reach Central Manhattan.
- Follow main quests until Zoe points you to the park (side quest “The Complete Set” might also lead you there).
- Activate the park’s radar by finding the three dishes and the central pylon.
- Locate the park resident’s arena (marked with a large boss icon on the map).
- Defeat the boss — it uses mold attacks and summons smaller enemies.
- In the Gap, select Spore Burst, test it, then confirm your choice.
How Spore Burst Works
Spore Burst fires a stream of mold projectiles that rapidly build the infected status effect on enemies. Infected deals damage over time and slowly drains health. Each projectile costs a small amount of power (about 5% of your total bar per second of firing). You can fire while moving, jumping, or in the air, but the projectiles have a fixed trajectory — no homing or tracking.
The ability is most effective against organic enemies. Mold enemies themselves are immune to infected, so Spore Burst does nothing against them (fire is better there). Against Hiss and other regular enemies, it quickly stacks the status bar.
Key numbers from testing:
- Infected status duration: about 6 seconds after last hit.
- Projectile range: roughly 30 meters — effective at mid-range.
- Damage per projectile: low (around 50-80 base), but the value is in the status build-up, not raw damage.
Best Synergies
Spore Burst’s real power comes from combining infected with burn (fire damage). When an enemy has both infected and burn active, it triggers an explosion that deals massive area damage. This is called the mold-fire combo.
To apply burn, you need either the Inferno or Ignite ability, unlocked by defeating the factory resident (Central Manhattan). Inferno is a punch that launches fire waves; Ignite imbues all your attacks with fire for a duration.
The explosion damage scales with the number of status stacks. Two quick Spore Burst salvos followed by an Inferno punch is enough to trigger the explosion on most standard enemies. Against bosses, you need to reapply both statuses multiple times.
Other useful pairings:
- Volatile Anomaly (from the downtown resident) — the energy ball can be thrown and detonated, and if you cast Ignite first, the ball becomes a fire turret that helps maintain burn.
- Growth (the other mold ability) — you can equip Growth alongside Spore Burst? No, you can only have one per category. But if you chose Growth, Spore Burst isn’t available. So this synergy only works if you picked Spore Burst and Ignite/Inferno.
Tips and Builds
Spore Burst is best for a mid-range crowd control build. It’s not great for single-target damage on its own — you need the explosion combo for that. Use it to soften groups, then switch to your primary weapon (Strike or Glaive works well) to finish off scattered enemies.
The power regeneration talents (Backstep Recovery, Retaliation Recovers 50% more power) help keep your power bar full so you can fire Spore Burst frequently. The Sustained Assault talent (successive melee hits drop health) is less useful here because Spore Burst projectiles don’t count as melee hits — they’re combat ability hits.
Artifact recommendation: The Molding Bar (sold by the park vendor for 1,000 source) grants immunity to infected but cuts max HP by 50%. Since Spore Burst users are already immune to infected (you’re the one applying it), this artifact is pointless. Instead, use Barbed Blade (healing near summons) if you also have Growth, or Lost Prescription (+30% health restore on perfect dodge) for general survivability.
A common mistake: Trying to use Spore Burst against mold enemies. It does zero damage to them because mold is immune to infected. Switch to fire or blunt damage for those encounters. That’s why you should always unlock the fire ability first (factory resident) before tackling the park.
