Marathon Major Update Rebalances Thermal Scopes and Boosts Ammo Supply for New Players

By Central

Bungie has deployed the first major update for its extraction shooter Marathon, targeting core gameplay balance and stability with significant changes to thermal scopes, starting resources, and enemy difficulty. The update, version 1.007 on PlayStation 5 and 1.0.0.4 on PC, released on March 11, 2026, directly addresses player feedback concerning the power of thermal optics and the scarcity of supplies for newcomers.

Thermal Scope Nerf Reduces Long-Range Dominance

The most substantial gameplay adjustment in this patch is a comprehensive rework of thermal scopes, tools that have defined the long-range meta since the game’s launch. Developers have reduced the visual clarity on targets when using these optics and, more critically, slashed their maximum detection ranges across all weapon categories.

Specific Range Reductions for Thermal Highlights

The patch notes detail precise meter reductions: Pistol thermal range drops from 55 to 40 meters; Rifles, LMGs, and SMGs go from 65 to 60 meters; Precision Rifles are cut from 100 to 80 meters; and the most dramatic change hits Sniper rifles, whose thermal highlight range plummets from 180 meters down to 100. This change aims to force more deliberate engagement choices and reduce the prevalence of passive, ultra-long-range spotting that could stifle map movement.

Item Economy Boosted for Beginners and Perimeter Zone

Recognizing the steep resource curve for new Runners, Bungie has injected more supplies into the early-game loop. The beginner-friendly Perimeter zone now features increased spawn counts for both Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates, providing more opportunities for players to heal and rearm during a run.

Free Sponsored Kits Receive More Starting Ammo

Further lowering the barrier to entry, the free Sponsored Kits from factions MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne now all start with increased ammunition. This allows players using these accessible kits to engage in more encounters before needing to scavenge, smoothing out the initial learning curve. Additionally, the frequency with which UESC Grenadiers drop EMP grenades has been reduced, slightly lessening the disruptive crowd-control threat players face.

Combat and Enemy Adjustments

The update includes several tweaks to combat flow and enemy balancing. The health of most standard UESC enemies and the shield health of UESC bosses have been slightly reduced. In developer notes accompanying the patch, Bungie clarified the intent: “We hope to alleviate some of the resource burden in both Solos and Crews… The goal here is to allow your bullets and meds to go further without reducing too much of the UESCs bite.” The team emphasized they value the “friction” these enemies provide and have no plans to fundamentally alter their aggressive design.

Audio and Bug Fixes

Other combat fixes resolve an issue where players could die instantly in confinement events and a bug where shield break visual effects could loop incorrectly. The audible range of gunfire and explosions has been increased, giving players more audio information to locate fights across the map.

Rook and Runner-Specific Changes

The Rook Runner received targeted adjustments. A bug that could delete backpacks when exfiltrating with Rook has been fixed, and his position will now correctly display on the map screen. To incentivize playing the character, exfiling with Rook now grants increased CyberAcme reputation and provides the same faction reputation bonus that solo players receive. Notably, Rook’s signature WSTR shotgun will now always spawn as a “Compromised” item, requiring the use of a rare Matter Fixative during the run to successfully extract it, adding a new layer of risk and decision-making.

Map and Contract Tweaks

Significant changes have been made to map access and contract flow. On the Outpost map, the switch-activated route to the “Broken Wing” entrance of the high-value Pinwheel area has been temporarily disabled. Developers stated the entrance “trivializes” access to the Pinwheel and that they are retuning it to better match the intended risk-reward balance. Other entrances, including another silent method, remain available.

Contract Adjustments

For contracts, the default distance at which objective navigation points appear has been doubled from 10 meters to 20 meters, making them easier to spot. The new NuCaloric contract had a bug fixed where enemy crews could hear its audio dialogue from too far away, and the difficulty of the UESC Commander encounter in the Traxus contract has been reduced.

Stability, Store, and Quality of Life

The patch addresses numerous crash issues on both client and server sides, including specific fixes for crashes related to using IME (Input Method Editor) keyboards for typing. Bungie noted that some third-party IME issues may persist and suggested using Windows’ built-in IME as a temporary workaround. The in-game store also saw fixes for incorrect bundle price displays and cosmetic item labels, and the LUX currency bundle’s bonus amount was increased from 100 to 120.

This first major update for Marathon demonstrates Bungie’s responsive approach to the live service extraction shooter. By directly nerfing a dominant tool like the thermal scope, boosting resources for new players, and fine-tuning enemy encounters, the development team is actively shaping the game’s tense, high-stakes meta. The changes to Rook and the temporary removal of a key map shortcut show a willingness to adjust systems both large and small in pursuit of balanced, engaging gameplay where every bullet and every decision carries weight.
