Path of Exile 3.28 Mirage Update Overhauls Atlas and Mapping System, Introduces Scion Reliquarian Ascendancy

By Central

The latest major update for Path of Exile, version 3.28 titled “Mirage,” has deployed, bringing transformative changes to the game’s endgame Atlas and mapping systems alongside a new challenge league and a powerful new Ascendancy for the Scion. This comprehensive patch, representing a fundamental shift in how players engage with the endgame, introduces flexible map items, replaces the long-standing Awakened Support Gems with Exceptional Support Gems, and permanently integrates the Keepers of the Flame league while removing Harbinger as a core mechanic.

The Mirage Challenge League: A Battle in the Astral Realm

Players are called to confront the Afarud, a depraved sect of the Faridun who have formed a pact with the necromancer Saresh. Their goal is to siphon the energies of captured Djinn to build an undead army for a final assault on the Maraketh. The league mechanic revolves around encountering imprisoned Djinn in maps. Upon defeating their guardians, the legendary Sekhema Varashta offers entry into the Astral Realm—a mirage—where players can choose one of three powerful Wishes to modify the encounter. These Wishes dramatically alter the rewards, causing monsters to drop enhanced loot, special currency for upgrading gear, hidden caches, or mysterious coins. The objective is to fight through astral hazards and Afarud mages to shatter the tether binding the Djinn, progressively thwarting the Afarud’s dark designs. The league features 40 new challenges with exclusive Orb Regalia Armour Set and Mirage Totem Pole hideout decorations as rewards.

New Scion Ascendancy and Exceptional Support Gems

A significant addition is the Reliquarian Ascendancy class for the Scion. Its Notable Passive Skills are designed to borrow powers from Unique items found throughout Wraeclast, with the specific powers changing each league. Consequently, these Notables cannot be obtained through Forbidden Flame or Forbidden Flesh jewels, ensuring the Reliquarian’s identity remains dynamic and league-specific.

Furthermore, Awakened Support Gems are being phased out and replaced by a new tier: Exceptional Support Gems. Over 40 of these more powerful gems can be found in the endgame. The patch also introduces three new currency items—the Coin of Knowledge, Coin of Power, and Coin of Skill—which corrupt a level 20 Skill Gem to imbue it with a random valid Support effect of Intelligence, Strength, or Dexterity type, respectively.

New and Transfigured Skill Gems

Version 3.28 expands the holy-themed arsenal with several new Strength/Intelligence skills. Divine Blast projects a holy beam that implodes and then explodes. Holy Hammers calls down cascading hammers, expendable with Power Charges for additional strikes. Holy Strike summons undamageable Holy Armament minions that copy your main-hand weapon. Shield of Light retaliates against blocked hits with waves of light. New Transfigured versions of existing skills like Shockwave Totem of Authority, Static Strike of Gathering Lightning, and Kinetic Fusillade of Detonation offer fresh playstyle variations. New support gems like Blessed Call, Excommunicate, Exemplar, and Hallow provide novel ways to augment builds.

Atlas and Mapping System Overhaul

The most sweeping changes in the Mirage update target the Atlas and mapping experience. Map items are no longer tied to a specific Map Area. Instead, players find generic Tier # Maps. To run a specific map like Mesa, players select it on the new Atlas interface, place the generic map item into the Map Device, and activate it. This provides unprecedented flexibility, allowing any map tier to be used for any unlocked Atlas location.

The Atlas structure itself has been redesigned. Exploration begins at the center, with each corner housing a Voidstone slot. All endgame content accessible via the Map Device is now visually represented on the Atlas. The Favoured Map system has been removed as a consequence of the new flexibility.

Shaped Regions and Eagon’s New Quest

Eagon, determined to stop Zana from severing the Atlas threads, now uses Arcane Astrolabes. Using an Astrolabe on a Map manifests a Shaped Region affecting many maps in that Atlas quadrant. These regions come in various types with different modifiers. Completing the Shaped Region’s objective removes its influence and adds an extra modifier to all remaining maps within it. Successfully clearing a region grants access to one of four Memory Vaults via Eagon, each offering targeted powerful rewards.

Voidstone and Endgame Progression Changes

The system for obtaining Voidstones has been adjusted. The Decayed Voidstone now comes from defeating both the Shaper and the Elder (or Uber Elder). Players receive a Voidstone from killing both the Searing Exarch and the Eater of Worlds (instead of one each). The extra Voidstone is now obtained from defeating the Incarnation of Dread. Each Voidstone now upgrades the minimum Map Tier in its quadrant to 16, causes maps there to drop one tier higher, converts lower-tier maps to Gold, and enables Nightmare Map drops.

Tier 17 Maps have been replaced by Nightmare Maps. The Atlas Passive Tree has seen significant revisions, with keystones like Shadow Shaping and Singular Focus removed and new ones like The Paths Not Taken added. Many numerical values on existing notables have been increased to compensate for broader systemic changes.

Keepers of the Flame Goes Core, Harbinger Removed

The Breach-themed Keepers of the Flame league has been permanently added to the core game. Players first meet Ailith in Act 6, and Breach Hives/Unstable Breaths spawn from that point onward. The mechanic has been rebalanced for core integration, with the Genesis Tree fully grown by default and Grafts no longer being grown. A new currency, Flesh of Xesht, transforms Breach Uniques to their alternate versions. Breachstones are now non-functional, vendorable for Hivebrain Glands.

Conversely, the Harbinger league has been removed as a core mechanic. Key currencies like Fracturing Orbs and Ancient Orbs have been added to the core drop pool, while Harbinger-specific currencies like Engineer’s Orbs and Horizon Orbs have been disabled. All related Atlas passives and scarabs have been removed or converted.

Extensive Balance Changes and Quality of Life

The patch includes wide-ranging balance adjustments across Ascendancies, skill gems, unique items, and passive trees. Notable changes include the Guardian’s Sentinel of Radiance becoming a permanent minion, the introduction of a new Guardian notable (Marshal of Divinity), and significant buffs to skills like Penance Brand and Storm Brand. The Templar’s starting skill is now Holy Strike with Hallow Support. Intelligence now grants 1% increased Maximum Energy Shield per 10 Intelligence (down from per 5).

Quality-of-life improvements are plentiful. The Ritual reward reminder is more prominent, the Currency Exchange features favorite trades and stash/inventory toggles, and controller support has been enhanced. Numerous bug fixes address issues ranging from skill interactions to boss fight mechanics.

League-Specific Adjustments

Settlers of Kalguur sees new shipping routes and targeted rewards for Tattoos and Runegrafts. Bestiary, Betrayal, Delve, Expedition, and other past leagues have received specific updates to integrate with the new systems and compensate for removed mechanics like Harbinger. For example, Tujen no longer sells cluster jewels, and Sulphite gain in maps has been roughly doubled at high levels.

With the 3.28 “Mirage” update, Grinding Gear Games has delivered one of the most consequential endgame restructures in Path of Exile’s history. By decoupling map items from specific locations, the developers have empowered player choice and streamlined the pursuit of targeted content. The introduction of the dynamic Reliquarian Ascendancy and the superior Exceptional Support Gems refreshes the meta, while the careful integration and removal of past league mechanics demonstrates an ongoing commitment to a sustainable and evolving endgame ecosystem. This patch sets a new foundation for Atlas exploration, promising to reshape the player journey through the endgame for leagues to come.
