Sulfur Game’s The Scholar’s Update Introduces Warpig and Two New Ghost Enemies with Major Rebalancing

By Central

The indie first-person shooter Sulfur has received its largest content expansion to date with The Scholar’s Update, introducing three new firearms, two spectral enemy types, and sweeping rebalancing across 150+ weapons, attachments, and oils. Developer Perfect Random continues to support the critically acclaimed retro-FPS, which has maintained thousands of positive reviews since its initial release.

New Arsenal and Ethereal Threats Expand Combat

At the core of The Scholar’s Update are three new firearms designed to offer fresh tactical options. The Chat-Pardeur 98, Songbird, and the notably named Warpig join Sulfur’s already extensive arsenal. Each weapon features unique handling characteristics and is integrated into the game’s deep customization system, allowing players to modify them with various attachments and oils.

Complementing the new weaponry are two formidable new adversaries: the Poltergeist and the Apparition. These ghostly enemies introduce unique behavioral patterns that deviate from Sulfur’s existing bestiary, requiring players to adapt their combat strategies. The Poltergeist is reported to manipulate the environment, while the Apparition utilizes elusive, phasing movements, making direct targeting more challenging.

Comprehensive Gameplay and System Overhauls

Beyond new content, the update delivers significant quality-of-life improvements and systemic refinements. A major focus has been placed on optimization, with new settings allowing players to control gib quantities for better performance during intense firefights. Additionally, enchantments that create environmental puddles no longer stack overlapping effects, reducing GPU strain.

The player experience has been smoothed through numerous adjustments. Reload animations now properly interrupt firing sequences, eliminating frustrating delays with slow-firing weapons. The player controller has been tweaked to facilitate more precise platforming and jumping without requiring advanced counter-strafing techniques. An on-screen low-health effect has been added as a crucial visual reminder to consume healing items during combat.

Major Rebalancing Reshapes Meta and Build Viability

The Scholar’s Update represents the most substantial balance pass in Sulfur’s history, with adjustments to weapon values, attachment statistics, and oil properties. The goal, as stated by Perfect Random, is to “make more builds viable and interesting.” This rebalancing affects fundamental combat metrics including spread, recoil, attack speed, durability, and critical hit chance across dozens of items.

Weapon Value and Performance Adjustments

Seventeen weapons have received market value adjustments in Sulfur’s in-game economy, reflecting their revised power levels and rarity. Notable changes include the Deathstar increasing from 3000 to 3200 SULF, the M11A2 Fisk jumping from 4500 to 7700 SULF, and the Longboy seeing a dramatic increase from 3200 to 9000 SULF. The Arbiter’s durability has been corrected to its intended 1800 points, double its previous erroneous value.

Attachment System Refinement

The attachment system has been completely reworked to provide more meaningful trade-offs. Barrel extensions now provide percentage-based spread reduction alongside bullet speed increases, rather than flat reductions. Silencers have been retooled to emphasize critical hit chance and recoil control over spread reduction, encouraging different build philosophies. Muzzle devices like the A12C Muzzle Brake now focus on recoil mitigation.

Oil Overhaul for Build Diversity

The oil system, which provides temporary weapon enhancements, has undergone extensive changes. Durability oils like Trusty Old, Rubber, and Gentle have received buffs to their maximum durability bonuses. Bounce-enhancing oils such as Wobble, Skip, and Scramble now provide additional ricochets. Utility oils have been carefully tuned, with Instant Oil’s bullet speed bonus reduced from 200% to 150% and Machine Oil’s movement speed penalty lessened from -50% to -30%.

Level Design Polish and Bug Elimination

Every major game environment has received attention in this update. The Caves gain a new chunk alongside fixes for collision issues, missing assets, and problematic enemy spawns. The Town area resolves issues with NPC placement and environmental geometry. Sewers, Castle, Forest, Bridge, and Fortress locations all benefit from collision fixes, overlapping room corrections, and removal of geometry that could trap players or enemies.

The Endless mode receives substantial enhancements with the addition of three bosses—Terrorbaum, Desert Clause, and the Witch—previously encountered in other game modes. Enemy behavior has been refined across the board, with adversaries now properly avoiding each other’s pathing and certain enemies like the Amalgamation being removed from the Shapeshifter Mutation pool for balance purposes.

Progression and Economy Refinements

Weapon experience rewards have been significantly increased for several high-tier enemies to accelerate player progression. Lucia now awards 60 Weapon XP (up from 30), Desert Clause awards 130 (up from 30), and the Witch awards 100 (up from 30). These changes make challenging encounters more rewarding for character development.

The crafting and inventory systems have been streamlined. Duplicate recipes have been removed, while new variants for Grenades, Stews, and organ-based Omelets have been added. Inventory management improvements prevent items from overlapping and becoming lost, while ammunition now features inventory caps with automatic overflow transfer to the player’s stash.

Visual and Audio Enhancements

Aesthetic improvements include new inspection animations for all weapons (activated by pressing L), unique artwork for Berry and Chocolate Milkshakes, and corrected visual damage displays on firearms. Audio issues have been addressed, including fixing the Amalgamation’s spam hit sounds underwater and ensuring Desert Clause properly triggers his associated music during encounters.

Perfect Random has indicated that a new weapon inspection feature with detailed tooltips for current gun builds—including individual oil effects—is prioritized for the next update. This quality-of-life addition will provide players with clearer information about their customized firearms during gameplay.

The Scholar’s Update demonstrates Perfect Random’s commitment to evolving Sulfur beyond its initial release. By introducing new content while substantially refining existing systems, the development team has addressed community feedback while expanding the game’s strategic depth. For players invested in Sulfur’s unique blend of retro-FPS action and deep customization, this update revitalizes the experience with fresh challenges and more viable build options, ensuring the game remains a standout title in the resurgent classic shooter genre.
