The Walking Trade Introduces Hellraids for Endless Endgame Challenge

By Central

The Walking Trade, the unique survival shop simulation game from developer Microwave Games, has significantly expanded its endgame content with a substantial new update. The headline feature is the introduction of Hellraids, a new endless raid system designed to provide a continuous, escalating challenge for players who have conquered the game’s standard bosses. This update, which also includes a suite of new features, bug fixes, and gameplay improvements, marks a pivotal step in the game’s development, shifting focus towards satisfying the core player base seeking long-term engagement.

Hellraids: An Endless Escalating Challenge

For players who have successfully defeated all the standard boss raids, the endgame has now been fundamentally redefined. Hellraids automatically begin on any save file that has met this condition, offering a procedurally generated sequence of increasingly difficult raids. The system is designed for perpetuity, with no upper limit to the challenge. The difficulty escalates through several mechanics: more enemies spawn in each wave, players eventually face multiple bosses simultaneously, and enemy health pools increase incrementally.

Mechanics and Player Control

The update introduces a new element of player agency within this endless system. A broken radio tower has been added outside the car park area. Players can repair this into a functional Siren. Activating this Siren forces the currently revealed raid to begin the following day, allowing players to control the timing of their next major confrontation. This tool is particularly valuable for players who wish to prepare thoroughly or align raid attempts with their in-game schedules. Furthermore, failing a Hellraid does not lock players out; they can reattempt the same raid in the future, reducing frustration and encouraging strategic learning.

New Achievements and Leaderboards

To complement the new endgame, three new Steam achievements have been added, tied to defeating specific milestones: the 1st, 10th, and 25th Hellraid. Additionally, a new global competitive element has been introduced. Working televisions within the game can now be turned on and off. When activated, these TVs display the global Steam leaderboard for the highest Hellraid defeated, allowing players to compare their endurance and skill against the entire community.

Key Features and Quality-of-Life Improvements

Beyond the core Hellraids system, the April update delivers several impactful features and refinements aimed at improving the overall player experience.

The Unstuck Button

A highly requested quality-of-life feature has finally been implemented. An “Unstuck” button is now available in the pause menu. When pressed, it initiates a five-second countdown, provided the player is not in combat. After this period, the player is teleported safely back to their bedroom. To prevent abuse, a cooldown of five minutes is applied after each use. This addresses a long-standing issue where players could become trapped in environmental geometry.

NPC and Customer Behavior Tweaks

The shop simulation aspect of the game has received subtle but meaningful improvements. Customers are now more likely to purchase items that are discounted, making sales strategies more effective. Furthermore, customers should no longer immediately exit the store if they have some stock to browse, even if their initial interest is low, leading to more natural and potentially profitable shopping visits. NPC pathfinding has also been slightly improved inside the complex hospital room environment.

Technical and Gameplay Optimizations

A range of technical fixes and optimizations underpin the update. The spawning of blood effects when mobs take damage has been optimized for performance. Hit detection for RPG projectiles has been improved for greater consistency. To prevent entities from getting lost or stuck, the distance NPCs will travel in fog has been reduced, improving overall pathfinding reliability.

Specific Bug Fixes and Gameplay Changes

The patch notes detail a list of resolved issues and deliberate gameplay adjustments to balance and flow.

Resolved Bugs

Several persistent bugs have been squashed. Service workers will no longer incorrectly attempt to place a basket item on the basket stand upgrade preview. A fix has been applied to an issue where cycling, equipping, or replacing melee weapons on the action bar would not cancel a charged throw action. The problematic Tumour zombies, which sometimes failed to explode after long play sessions, now behave consistently. An issue causing the “extra raid rewards” skill to grant wildly excessive rewards has been corrected.

Balance Changes and Raid Mechanics

Significant balance changes have been implemented for weapons and traps. The damage of the Rocket Launcher explosion has been reduced from 200 to 100. The value of the Modded Nail Gun has been increased to exceed the combined cost of its crafting components. The Sniper Rifle’s staff Combat Power has been raised to align better with other high-tier deadly weapons.

In terms of raid mechanics, key changes affect both players and bosses. The Skip/Dumpster has been moved closer to a wall to prevent players from getting stuck. During a raid, the game clock now stops at 7 PM, resuming only once the raid is defeated. This allows players to sleep at 7 PM to concede defeat in a raid without dying, offering a strategic retreat option. Boss enemies have been made immune to certain crowd-control tools: they will no longer be caught in Bear Traps, and while they will still take damage from Barbed Wire, they will not be slowed by it, ensuring bosses remain a formidable and mobile threat.

The Future of The Walking Trade

With the introduction of Hellraids, Microwave Games has expressed increased satisfaction with the state of the game’s endgame challenge. This shift in focus indicates that the developer’s immediate roadmap is turning towards other core systems. The team has announced that the next major update, expected sometime in April, will direct attention back to the shop simulation mechanics. This upcoming patch is planned to include further bug fixes and is also considering making staff members more durable for raids, potentially enhancing their survivability and utility during the new Hellraid encounters.

The Hellraids update represents a maturation of The Walking Trade’s design philosophy, cementing its commitment to providing a deep, replayable experience for its dedicated community. By layering an endless, scalable challenge atop its existing blend of survival, management, and combat, the game offers a compelling reason for players to continue refining their strategies, optimizing their shops, and testing their limits against an ever-growing horde. This update not only addresses immediate player requests for more endgame content but also sets a foundation for future expansions, ensuring that the journey from shopkeeper to survivor remains engaging long after the initial story bosses have been vanquished.
