In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, actor Paul Bettany has expressed profound confidence in the upcoming Disney+ series “Vision Quest,” describing the production as “deeply engaging” and suggesting it will surpass audience expectations. The series, currently in post-production, marks the next chapter for the character following the critically acclaimed “WandaVision” in 2021.

Bettany, who has portrayed the synthezoid Avenger since the first Iron Man film in 2008, reserved his highest praise for showrunner Terry Matalas. He emphasized that Matalas’s understanding of the character’s core identity was instrumental to the series’ direction. “I think Terry realized, and agreed with me, that Marvel is rewarded when it takes risks,” Bettany stated. “And I think he simply understood, deep down, who Vision is. He knew which stories we should tell for this phase of his life.”

The actor framed “Vision Quest” as a compelling character study. “We’ve created a very fun and engaging series about a guy who is a stranger and is trying to figure out who he is,” he explained. This narrative follows the White Vision, whose whereabouts have been unknown since the finale of “WandaVision.” The new storyline is expected to reconnect the character with the Maximoff family nucleus, specifically through a reunion with his super-powered son, Tommy, played by Ruaridh Mollica.

In a significant revelation, Bettany confirmed the return of a major antagonist, generating considerable excitement. “The return of Ultron is a delight!” he exclaimed. James Spader is set to reprise his role as the menacing artificial intelligence, first introduced in 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” This confirmation aligns with earlier rumors and suggests the series will delve deeply into Vision’s origins and his complicated relationship with his “father.”

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the involvement of Terry Matalas—known for his work on “Star Trek: Picard”—signals a series with strong narrative focus and potential connections to the wider MCU. The exploration of themes like family and parenthood, as previously hinted by Marvel TV executives, positions “Vision Quest” as a more intimate, character-driven entry amidst the studio’s larger blockbuster slate.

The series is deep in post-production, with a targeted release window in the latter half of 2026 on Disney+. This timeline places it within Marvel Studios’ ongoing Phase 6. The secrecy surrounding the project has been tightly maintained, with Bettany’s comments offering the most substantial preview of the series’ tone and quality to date.

“Vision Quest” carries the heavy burden of following the innovative and emotionally resonant “WandaVision,” which blended sitcom homages with superhero drama to widespread acclaim. Bettany’s enthusiasm suggests the new series will not merely replicate that formula but instead forge its own distinct path, focusing on Vision’s solitary journey of self-discovery while re-integrating key elements from his past.

The actor’s comments indicate a series that is both a satisfying continuation and a bold new beginning. By addressing Vision’s existential crisis and his fractured family ties, “Vision Quest” has the potential to redefine the character for the next era of the MCU. The inclusion of Ultron promises high stakes and personal conflict, providing a perfect foil for Vision’s internal struggle.

With principal photography complete and the creative team fine-tuning the final product, the anticipation for “Vision Quest” is set to build steadily. Paul Bettany’s unwavering endorsement, coupled with the return of iconic characters and a focus on profound themes, suggests that when the series finally premieres, it will offer a unique and compelling addition to the Marvel Disney+ catalog, one that rewards long-time fans while exploring uncharted emotional territory for its central hero.
