Infiniteloop, the developer behind the popular virtual desktop companion application Desktop Mate, has announced its latest downloadable content addition. The new DLC character will be Gumi, the green-haired virtual singer from the Megpoid Vocaloid software developed by Internet Co. This marks a significant expansion of the Vocaloid roster within the Desktop Mate ecosystem, as Gumi becomes the first character from the Internet Co. library to receive a Desktop Mate incarnation. The DLC is scheduled for release on April 2, 2026, with a price point set at $14.99, consistent with previous full-sized character add-ons.

The upcoming Gumi DLC is meticulously crafted based on her modern VOCALOID6 appearance and incorporates the character design by illustrator Nou, ensuring an authentic and up-to-date representation for fans. According to the official product page now live on Steam, this virtual desktop companion will feature a variety of engaging animations that bring her personality to life. These animations include sequences of her singing and enjoying a slice of cake, adding a layer of interactivity and charm to the user’s desktop environment.

Beyond visual animations, the DLC will leverage Gumi’s iconic voice. While the announcement did not specify if any particular songs will be directly referenced within the application, it confirmed that her voice will be utilized. A notable interactive element highlighted is a “carrot” sound effect, which will play when users click on the character—a playful nod to Gumi’s signature accessory and theme. As of the announcement, official screenshots have been released, but a trailer showcasing her movements, voice clips, and sound effects in action has not yet been published.

Desktop Mate has built a diverse portfolio of DLC characters since its inception, featuring icons from video games and beloved Sanrio mascots. However, a clear trend has emerged: Vocaloid characters constitute the majority of the application’s add-on offerings. This strategy taps into the massive, dedicated global fanbase of virtual singers.

The most prominent presence comes from Crypton Future Media’s “Character Vocal Series.” Flagship characters like Hatsune Miku, along with several of her variant designs, have been available for some time. They are joined by other Crypton staples such as Megurine Luka and the Kagamine twins, Len and Rin. This extensive lineup has made Desktop Mate a secondary hub for fans to interact with these digital celebrities outside of music software and live concerts.

The ecosystem extends beyond Crypton. Characters from other voice synthesizer publishers like TOKYO6 ENTERTAINMENT and VOCALOMAKETS have also found a home on the desktop. Popular figures such as Kizuna Akari, Natsuki Karin, and Yuzuki Yukari offer users a broader spectrum of the Vocaloid and UTAU world. The addition of Gumi from Internet Co. fills a notable gap, finally bringing one of the most recognizable and independently popular Vocaloids—often considered a rival to Miku in fan circles—into the Desktop Mate family.

Gumi, voiced by Japanese singer and voice actress Megumi Nakajima, debuted in 2009 and quickly rose to prominence within the Vocaloid community. Known for her bright, powerful voice and association with the color green and carrots, she has been the voice behind countless fan-made and professional songs. Her inclusion in Desktop Mate is a testament to her enduring popularity and status as a cornerstone of the genre.

For those unfamiliar with Gumi’s vocal range and character, a prime example of her musical legacy is the song “Matryoshka,” composed by Kenshi Yonezu under his former circle name Hachi. The track famously features both Gumi and Hatsune Miku in a fast-paced, lyrically complex duet that became a viral hit and remains a classic within the community. This song exemplifies the creative potential and cultural impact that Vocaloids like Gumi represent.

Desktop Mate operates on a straightforward DLC model, allowing users to customize their digital workspace with animated companions that react to mouse clicks and system activity. The consistent pricing of $14.99 for full characters like Gumi establishes clear expectations for consumers. The application itself is available for PC via digital distribution platforms like Steam, making it widely accessible.

The launch of the Gumi DLC on April 2, 2026, represents a strategic release for Infiniteloop. It not only caters to the existing fanbase of Desktop Mate but also actively draws in the substantial community of Gumi and Internet Co. Vocaloid enthusiasts. This move continues to solidify Desktop Mate’s position as a leading platform for official, high-quality virtual character merchandise in the desktop customization space. For many users, these characters are more than just animations; they are digital idols and companions that personalize the computing experience, blending fandom with daily digital life in a uniquely engaging way. The arrival of Gumi promises to bring her distinctive energy and voice to countless desktops, further enriching this niche but passionate intersection of software and fan culture.
