Square Enix has officially signaled that preparations for the 25th anniversary of the Kingdom Hearts series are in motion. In a commemorative post on its Japanese social media channels marking the franchise’s 24th anniversary, the company shared a new, enigmatic illustration from series creator Tetsuya Nomura. The artwork itself, while celebratory, contained the most critical piece of news: a handwritten note confirming the development team is actively working toward the milestone celebration scheduled for March 28, 2027.

The focal point of the anniversary post was not just the art but the message it concealed. The illustration depicts an unidentified character from the series, viewed from behind, holding a translucent umbrella amidst a backdrop of blue hydrangeas. The figure sports short, grey hair and a distinctive black coat with a hood, leading to immediate speculation among the fanbase. While the identity remains officially unconfirmed, the character’s design has sparked theories pointing to several key figures.

The leading candidate among community sleuths is Yozora, the mysterious character introduced in Kingdom Hearts III and explored further in the Re Mind downloadable content. His aesthetic and narrative connections to the unrevealed future of the series make him a prime subject. Other plausible identities include Riku, whose journey often involves darker, more contemplative imagery, or a younger incarnation of Master Xehanort. The deliberate ambiguity serves as a classic Nomura tactic, building anticipation and discussion without revealing concrete details.

This is not an isolated instance of Tetsuya Nomura sharing original character art for special occasions. The practice has become a cherished tradition for the dedicated Kingdom Hearts community. One of the most recent examples occurred on Halloween 2025, when Nomura released festive drawings depicting Sora, Donald, and Goofy in their iconic Halloween Town costumes from the first game. These art drops are rarely accompanied by major announcements but instead act as direct, personal engagements from the creator to the fans, reinforcing the series’ deep community ties.

The announcement arrives at a pivotal moment for the franchise’s roadmap. The next major mainline entry, tentatively referred to as Kingdom Hearts IV, is confirmed to be in development. It is set to continue Sora’s story in the strange, realistic world of Quadratum, with teased footage already showing elements like the appearance of Strelitzia and playable segments featuring King Mickey. However, a firm release window remains elusive.

The path to the next anniversary has not been without its setbacks. The mobile title Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, which was intended to bridge narrative gaps and engage fans in the interim, was officially canceled in May 2025. This cancellation has left a content gap, making the promise of a substantial 25th-anniversary celebration all the more critical for maintaining momentum and fan engagement leading up to 2027.

Given the scale of the milestone, expectations within the Kingdom Hearts community are understandably high. Historical precedent from other Square Enix anniversaries suggests a multi-faceted celebration. While the new art did not specify any projects, potential reveals could include a first major trailer and release timeframe for Kingdom Hearts IV, details on a potential anniversary merchandise line, musical concerts, or even the announcement of a comprehensive compilation or remaster for modern platforms. The note’s confirmation that work is underway suggests these plans are being formulated with the significance of the date in mind.

The simple act of acknowledging the 25th anniversary two years in advance is a strategic move. It sets a definitive marker for fans and manages expectations, ensuring that March 28, 2027, is circled on calendars globally. It transforms the waiting period for Kingdom Hearts IV from a passive hiatus into an active countdown toward a guaranteed event. For a series built on connections, heart, and long-form storytelling, this early teaser perfectly aligns with its themes, assuring the dedicated audience that their patience will be rewarded with a celebration worthy of the series’ legacy. The journey to the next chapter, it seems, is now officially part of the adventure.
