Even as it faces a barrage of reviews, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivers a treasure trove of deep-cut references that have Nintendo diehards scouring every frame. While the thrilling presence of Star Fox has dominated conversation, the film’s creators at Illumination have scattered several incredibly subtle nods to other beloved Nintendo franchises. For the eagle-eyed fan, these brief moments—featuring Kirby, Metroid, and even Punch-Out!!—do more than just wink at the audience; they quietly suggest a shared universe far larger than the Mushroom Kingdom.

The Kirby Luma: A Puffball in the Stars

One of the most charming and easily missed easter eggs involves the denizens of the Comet Observatory. As highlighted by keen observers online, during a scene where a swarm of Lumas flutter about, a single pink Luma is seen puffing out its cheeks and floating in a distinctly familiar way. The pose and movement are a direct homage to the iconic pink puffball, Kirby, from his long-running game series. This blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment is a perfect example of the film’s layered fan service, rewarding those who know the source material without disrupting the narrative flow.

Samus’s Gunship and the Pikmin Appearance

Perhaps the most exciting confirmation for hardcore fans comes in a scene where Princess Peach and Toad are searching the cosmos for a pilot. As they approach the hangar bay where Star Fox is stationed, a single shot reveals a familiar spacecraft parked in the background: the distinct silhouette of Samus Aran’s gunship from the Super Metroid era. This explicit nod to the Metroid franchise confirms that the bounty hunter’s world exists somewhere in this cinematic reality. Notably, this same scene also features a brief cameo by Pikmin, creating a concentrated blast of Nintendo fan service that underscores the interconnected possibilities at play.

Little Mac’s Brooklyn Training Montage

The references aren’t confined to the galactic reaches. Back on Earth, during Yoshi’s romp through the streets of Brooklyn, another classic Nintendo property gets its moment. As spotted by fans, the boxer Little Mac and his trainer, Doc Louis from the Punch-Out!! series, can be seen running alongside the traffic, engaged in a training session. This callback is particularly meta, as the original live-action Super Mario Bros. film from 1993 also featured a Punch-Out!! arcade machine, creating a fun, full-circle homage that connects decades of Nintendo cinema.

More Than Just Easter Eggs: Implications for a Nintendo Universe

While these are undoubtedly fun secrets for fans to find, their collective presence carries significant weight. Each reference—from Kirby’s mimic to Samus’s parked ship, and Little Mac’s earthly hustle—serves as a deliberate breadcrumb. They are not mere background filler but intentional indicators that these characters and their worlds coexist within the same broad narrative space as Mario and Peach. This builds a foundation far richer than a single franchise, teasing a potential tapestry of stories.

Despite Shigeru Miyamoto’s recent dismissal of a Super Smash Bros. movie being in immediate development, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie demonstrates that the essential ingredient—a shared universe—is already being constructed. These easter eggs confirm that Kirby is out there floating through space, Samus is likely on a mission in another sector, and Little Mac is training hard on the streets of Brooklyn. The Mario Cinematic Universe, whether fans sigh at the term or embrace it, is already populated, setting the stage for limitless possibilities far beyond the next power-star quest.
