This major update introduces a fundamental shift in core mechanics, reimagines the loot system, and delivers a suite of powerful new artifacts, all while targeting the game’s balance to create more dynamic and engaging matches. The Space Gods set promises to reshape the meta from the ground up, offering both veteran tacticians and newcomers a fresh strategic landscape to master.

TFT Set 17 Mechanics Explained

The Space Gods set introduces several foundational changes to how a game of TFT is played, moving beyond simple unit and trait adjustments to alter the very flow of each match.

The Realm of the Gods

The most dramatic change is the replacement of the traditional Carousel with the Realm of the Gods. At key stages, players are presented with a choice between two divine entities, each offering a unique selection of units with a component item already attached. After making this primary choice, the benevolent Pengu provides a secondary, less powerful offering. This system maintains the catch-up mechanics of the old Carousel; players with lower health will receive higher-cost units from Pengu and will find component anvils instead of random components during PvE rounds, helping them stabilize their board. The god you align with becomes a patron, delivering a significant Boon via an armory at stage 4-7 and continuing to drop periodic loot for the remainder of the game.

Loot System Adjustments

To account for the new God Blessing round, the overall loot distribution has been recalibrated. Players will now receive one less component at Stage 3-7. Stage 4-7 has been entirely transformed into the God Blessing round, where players are granted between one and three components directly, accelerating late-game item completion and strategic flexibility.

Targeting and Movement

A quality-of-life improvement has been made to unit targeting. Now, when a champion’s current target moves out of its attack range, the unit will first search for another valid target within its current range. Only if no target is found will it move up to one hex to chase the original target. This change is designed to reduce frustration caused by units awkwardly shuffling or failing to attack due to minor positional changes.

Surrendering Mechanics

The surrender function has been updated. When a player surrenders, combat will continue to play out on their board. However, their health is immediately set to -99, ensuring they finish below all remaining opponents. This prevents surrendered boards from unfairly affecting the outcome of fights between other players still in the game.

Keyword Changes

Several keywords have been updated for clarity and consistency:

Attack Speed slows are now called Slow instead of “Chill.”

Enemy damage reduction is now called Weaken instead of “Dazzle.”

The effect “Spells can critically strike” has been consolidated into the new keyword Precision.

Precision means ability damage can critically strike. Additional sources of Precision grant a 10% Damage Amp, which can stack.

Riot Games has also confirmed that Encounters will return in the 17.2 patch but are not part of the 17.1 launch.

TFT Set 17 Item Balance: Targeting Tank Dominance

Riot Games has taken direct aim at the dominance of “unkillable” tank builds in the previous meta. A series of targeted nerfs to key defensive items aims to create more balanced boards where items and buffs are distributed across multiple units, rather than funneled into a single nearly-invincible frontliner. This shift encourages more diverse team compositions and strategic itemization. The following item adjustments were highlighted in the patch notes:

Adaptive Helm: Tank/Fighter Bonus Resists reduced from 45 to 30.

Bramble Vest: Bonus Health reduced from 9% to 6%; Armor reduced from 65 to 50.

Dragon’s Claw: Bonus Health reduced from 9% to 6%; Magic Resist reduced from 75 to 60.

Gargoyle Stoneplate: Base Resists reduced from 30 to 25.

Evenshroud: Temporary Resists reduced from 25 to 15.

Nashor’s Tooth: Ability Power reduced from 18 to 15.

Rabadon’s Deathcap: Ability Power increased from 50 to 55.

Spirit Visage: Durability reduced from 10% to 8%; Healing reduced from 2.5% to 2%.

Sterak’s Gage: Shield Amount reduced from 50% max HP to 40% max HP; Attack Damage increased from 40% to 45%.

Steadfast Heart: Durability reduced from 10-18% to 5-15%.

All Patch 17.1 God Artifacts

Central to the Space Gods theme are the powerful signature artifacts, each tied to a specific deity. These unique items offer build-defining abilities and open up new strategic synergies. Here is the complete list of artifacts available in Patch 17.1:

Ahri’s Aura

AP: 20%

Mana per Second: 4

The holder is orbited by 3 foxfires. Each one deals 50% (AP) magic damage and the orbit expands to hit the holder’s current target. For every 20 Mana the holder spends, foxfires travel 5% faster for the rest of combat.

Ekko’s Patience

AD: 25

AP: 25

Total Ability damage is increased by 45%, but is dealt over 2 seconds instead.

Evelynn’s Instinct

AS: 40%

Omnivamp: 15%

When switching targets, blink to the next target. Attacks and Abilities execute the holder’s target below 12% of their Health. Kills grant the holder 50% Attack Speed decaying over 3 seconds.

Kayle’s Exaltation

AD: 25%

AP: 25%

AS: 15%

After 18 seconds of combat, this and all completed items on the holder become Radiant.

Soraka’s Miracle

Durability: 10%

The first 2 times the holder drops below 50% Health, a Miracle occurs, healing them for 20% of their max Health.

If the holder survives player combat, gain 1 player Health for each Miracle this combat.

Thresh’s Lantern

HP: 400

Armor: 25

Magic Resist: 25

After 6 seconds of combat, pull the leftmost benched unit onto the battlefield. While that unit lives, 20% of all damage the holder would take is redirected to them. Traits of champions flung onto the board do not become active.

Varus’s Obsession

Damage Amp: 15%

Combat Start: Your strongest Tank becomes the Soulmate. For each second they are alive, the holder gains 3% stacking Attack Damage and Ability Power. The Soulmate heals for 20% of damage the holder deals.

Yasuo’s Bladework

Every 3.5 seconds, your next attack is a double attack.

AD: 30%

AS: 10%

TFT Space Gods Cosmetics

No TFT set is complete without a new suite of cosmetics, and Space Gods delivers with a celestial collection. For tacticians, the set introduces Unbounds Chosen Of The Wolf Katarina and Dark Star Mordekaiser, each featuring their own dedicated finisher animations. Fans of the popular Chibi and Prestige styles have several new options, including Prestige Chibi Star Nemesis Morgana, Chibi Battle Bat Xayah, and Chibi Star Guardian Syndra. The update also launches the Space Gods Pass 1, offering a progression track with rewards, and a new cosmic arena is available for players to acquire, rounding out the visual overhaul of the Convergence.

With its overhauled core mechanics, rebalanced item ecosystem, and potent new artifacts, Teamfight Tactics Set 17 establishes a compelling new chapter. The shift from the Carousel to the Realm of the Gods adds a layer of strategic commitment and divine favor, while the targeted item nerfs promise to diversify the late-game meta. Mastering the synergies of the god artifacts and adapting to the new economic and targeting rules will be key for players looking to conquer the ranked ladder under the banner of the Space Gods.

Teamfight Tactics Set 17 has arrived in the 17.1 patch, bringing the cosmic-themed Space Gods to the Convergence.
