When Maplestar released an adult animation featuring Fern and Stark from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, the anime community took notice. But what made this release truly historic was the involvement of Yūta Suzuhana – an animator who actually worked on the official Frieren anime. This marked the first known collaboration between a mainstream industry professional and an independent adult animator. How the collaboration came together

The exact details of how Suzuhana and Maplestar connected have not been publicly disclosed. However, based on social media posts and Patreon updates, it is believed that:

"Maplestar

  1. Suzuhana was already aware of Maplestar’s work (likely through social media)

  2. Mutual respect led to a conversation about collaborating

  3. The Fern & Stark animation was chosen as the project

  4. Suzuhana contributed specific animation cuts or consulting

What Makes the Maplestar Frieren & Fern Animation Different?

Maplestar has produced many adult animations, but the Frieren project stands out for several reasons.

    Comparison with other Maplestar animations:

    Feature
Other Maplestar Animations
Frieren & Fern Animation

    Collaborator
Solo work
Yūta Suzuhana (official animator)

    Character accuracy
High
Extremely high (professional oversight)

    Animation fluidity
Very good
Exceptional (studio-level smoothness)

    Scene selection
Fan-chosen or original
Faithful to series tone

    Specific improvements noted by fans:

    Aspect
Fan Feedback

    Facial expressions
More nuanced, in-character for Fern and Stark

    Movement physics
Hair and clothing flow more naturally

    Background art
Higher detail, closer to official anime

    Pacing
Better rhythm between action and quiet moments

figurefigurefigurefigurefigurefigure

Does it feel like a scene from the official anime?

This is the question most fans ask. The answer: close, but not identical. The animation quality approaches professional standards, but the adult content means it would never appear in the TV broadcast. However, the character designs and emotional tone are respectful to the source material.
