Among the contenders, BYD is moving most aggressively. BYD is expected to introduce models like the affordable Seagull hatchback (estimated around C$25,000), the Dolphin, the Atto 3 SUV, and the Seal sedan, positioning itself to undercut competitors in every segment. The company has even expressed long-term interest in establishing local manufacturing. Geely is adopting a more measured strategy, with its premium Zeekr division posting senior leadership roles in Toronto, though job listings reference the “Geely Auto Brand,” suggesting the mainstream Geely nameplate may launch first. Chery has filed trademark applications for several sub-brands, including Exeed, iCar, and Omoda, and has begun recruiting staff, with its Jaecoo E5 EVs already spotted testing in Ontario.<\/p>\n

However, the immediate beneficiary of the new quota system has been Tesla<\/a>, an American company manufacturing in China. Tesla swiftly launched the Shanghai-built Model 3 Premium RWD in Canada at a starting price of C$39,490, drastically undercutting previous prices and most competitors, despite not qualifying for the federal iZEV rebate. Industry estimates suggest Tesla could secure 7,000 to 10,000 of the initial 24,500 import permits. Other existing players like Polestar, which previously sold China-built Polestar 2s in Canada, and Volvo, which may consider sourcing the EX30 from China, are also positioned to benefit from the lower tariffs. Notably, Geely-controlled Lotus has already launched the Eletre SUV under the new rules, though its C$119,900 price tag caters to a luxury niche rather than the mass market.<\/p>\n

The models anticipated to reach Canadian consumers within the next year illustrate the potential for increased affordability and choice. BYD’s lineup, particularly the Seagull and Dolphin, could redefine the entry-level EV segment. Chery is likely to offer the Omoda 5 EV, a sporty compact crossover priced around C$30,000 in other markets, and the Jaecoo E5. While Geely has not confirmed specific models, its Chinese portfolio includes a range of affordable sedans, SUVs, and plug-in hybrids. Despite these preparations, none of these Chinese brands are expected to actually sell vehicles in Canada until late 2026 at earliest, due to the time required to build dealer networks, complete vehicle certification, and navigate the permit allocation process.<\/p>\n

This situation presents an ironic twist: a policy designed to bring affordable Chinese EVs to Canada has initially most benefited an American automaker. Yet, Tesla’s aggressive pricing with the Model 3 does advance the overarching goal of accelerating EV adoption by offering a compelling, low-cost option. The true impact of the policy will be realized when BYD, Chery, and Geely’s budget-friendly models finally arrive, potentially reshaping market dynamics.
