It’s everywhere. The comment sections are on fire. The dislike buttons are getting a workout. And somehow, a gelatinous cube named Frank has become the most controversial video game character since Abby from The Last of Us Part II.

The source of all this madness? God of War: Laufey — the newly announced spin-off from Sony Santa Monica that dares to ask the question nobody asked: “What if we made a God of War game without Kratos, set in a chaotic afterlife dimension, with a talking jelly cube as your best friend?”

The internet’s answer has been loud, brutal, and surprisingly unified. And then David Jaffe — the original creator of God of War — threw a Molotov cocktail onto the fire by calling the game “uninspired,” “dull,” “fucking goofy,” and comparing it to Forspoken (gaming’s favorite punching bag for “what not to do”).

So what’s really going on? Why is everyone angry? Is it valid criticism, or just the usual gamer outrage machine doing its thing? And what does a jelly cube have to do with any of it?

Let’s break it down. All of it. The creator’s brutal verdict. The cube. The cultural war you didn’t see coming. And why God of War: Laufey might be the most controversial game of 2026 — before anyone has even played it.

The Creator’s Brutal Verdict – David Jaffe Says What Everyone Was Thinking

Let’s start with the headline that broke the internet.

David Jaffe, the man who created God of War and directed the original two games, was livestreaming his reaction to PlayStation’s June 2026 State of Play. He was excited. He was hopeful. And then the God of War: Laufey trailer started playing.

His first reaction? “The fuck was that?”

It didn’t get better from there.

Here’s what Jaffe said, verbatim (or as close as English subtitles can get to his unfiltered honesty):

Jaffe Quote

Why It Hurts

“That looks like shit. I’m going to be honest with you.”

The creator of the franchise just called your game “shit.” On camera.

“Reminds me of Forspoken a little bit.”

Forspoken is a punchline. This is assassination.

“Uninspired. Dull.”

Two words that should never describe a God of War game.

“You’ve lost the gore. You’ve lost the character. You’ve lost the identifiable mythology.”

A three-point takedown of everything the franchise stood for.

“Lost me with the cube. Really fucking goofy.”

Frank the Cube became a meme in real time.

“If you took God of War off the title… you would not be talking about this game.”

The dagger. The kill shot. The truth nobody wanted to admit.

figurefigurefigurefigurefigure

Jaffe didn’t just criticize Laufey. He eviscerated it. And the internet — already suspicious of a Kratos-less God of War — rallied behind him.

But here’s the thing. Jaffe isn’t just some angry YouTuber farming outrage for clicks. He’s the guy who wrote Kratos. He’s the reason we have the Ghost of Sparta at all. When he speaks, people listen — not because he’s always right, but because he has a right to an opinion that most critics don’t.

And his opinion is that Laufey is a mistake. A well-animated, technically impressive, beautifully scored mistake. But a mistake nonetheless.

The Jelly Cube – How Frank Became the Face of Failure

Now we have to talk about Frank.

Because honestly? Frank might be the single strangest design choice in the history of AAA gaming. And that’s saying something. We’ve had talking guns (Borderlands). We’ve had talking swords (NieR). We’ve even had talking backpacks (Dora the Explorer, if you want to get technical). But a talking gelatinous cube?

Frank is a cube. A cube of magical jelly. He floats. He talks. He has a personality (voiced by Jack Quaid, who is wonderful and deserves better). He also transforms into a sword because… reasons. He is, by all accounts, your primary companion throughout God of War: Laufey.

Let me repeat that for anyone who skipped the briefing: Your main companion in a God of War game is a jelly cube.

Jaffe’s reaction was immediate and visceral: “Lost me with the cube. It’s the little Disney character at the beginning. It just seems… this seems like just a fantasy.”

And that’s the problem. God of War is not a fantasy game in the whimsical, magical, talking-cube sense. It’s a fantasy game in the “I will tear your head off and use it as a lantern” sense. The tonal whiplash is so severe it’s giving fans emotional whiplash.

The internet has turned Frank into a meme, of course. There are already fan edits. Jokes. Parody accounts. Someone probably has a tattoo by now. But memes don’t sell copies. And when your most memorable character is a joke, you’ve failed at character design.

Here’s a comparison: imagine if The Witcher 3 replaced Roach with a flying teapot that told knock-knock jokes. Or if Elden Ring gave Torrent a catchphrase. That’s Frank. A companion so tonally wrong for the franchise that he single-handedly undermines any attempt at serious storytelling.

Frank might be funny. He might be charming. He might even become a cult favorite in a few years. But right now, in the context of a God of War reveal, he’s the visual representation of everything fans are afraid of: a franchise that has lost its identity and is trying to find a new one by throwing random ideas at the wall.

The cube, unfortunately, did not stick.

The War You Didn’t See Coming – How Laufey Became a Cultural Battlefield

Now we get to the messy part. The part that makes people uncomfortable. The part that turns reasonable discussions into flame wars.

God of War: Laufey has become ammunition in the broader culture war — the same one that has consumed Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Ghost of Yotei, and countless other franchises where beloved male protagonists have been replaced by women.

Let me be extremely clear about something before we go any further: the problem with Laufey is not that it has a female protagonist.

I’m going to say that again because nuance is dead on the internet: THE PROBLEM IS NOT A WOMAN PROTAGONIST.

We have endless examples of successful, beloved female-led games:

Stellar Blade (grossed over $100 million, sequel already announced)

Tomb Raider (Lara Croft is an icon, full stop)

Resident Evil (Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield — legends)

Control (Jesse Faden is incredible)

Metroid (Samus Aran is literally gaming royalty)

Bayonetta (chef’s kiss)

Horizon Zero Dawn (Aloy carried a franchise for two console generations)

So when fans complain about Laufey, and critics immediately label them as “toxic incels who hate women,” something gets lost in translation. Because those same fans bought Stellar Blade. They pre-ordered Tomb Raider. They streamed Control for hours.

Here’s what they’re actually angry about — and this is the part the culture war discourse refuses to acknowledge:

They’re angry about replacement. Not representation.

Let me explain.

When Uncharted: The Lost Legacy replaced Nathan Drake with Chloe and Nadine for a side story, fans were fine with it. Why? Because it was a spin-off. Because Nate wasn’t killed off or erased. Because the new characters earned their place over multiple games.

When The Last of Us Part II killed Joel and made Abby a co-protagonist, half the fanbase lost their minds. Not because Abby has muscles. Not because she’s a woman. But because they loved Joel. They spent an entire game bonding with him. And he was taken away in the most brutal way possible, then replaced by someone they didn’t know and weren’t given time to love.

The same pattern is playing out with Laufey. Kratos isn’t dead (probably). But he’s absent. Replaced by a character we’ve barely met, in a setting that has nothing to do with his story, with a tone that feels like someone else’s vision wearing a God of War mask.

Jaffe touched on this without saying the words: “You’ve lost the character. You’ve lost the identifiable mythology. You’ve lost me.”

He didn’t say “I hate women protagonists.” He said “you’ve lost what made this franchise special.”

And that’s the war nobody saw coming. Not a war between left and right. Not a war between progressives and traditionalists. But a war between God of War fans who want more Kratos and a Sony Santa Monica that seems determined to give them everything except Kratos.

The Dislike Ratio Doesn’t Lie – What the Numbers Tell Us

Let’s talk numbers, because numbers don’t have feelings.

At the time of writing, the official God of War: Laufey trailer on PlayStation’s YouTube channel has a like-to-dislike ratio that would make a PR executive weep. While exact figures fluctuate (YouTube hid the dislike count years ago, but third-party extensions track it), multiple sources report that dislikes are hovering at nearly 40-50% of total engagement.

For context: God of War Ragnarök‘s reveal trailer had approximately 90% likes to 10% dislikes. That’s a healthy, excited fanbase. Laufey‘s ratio is closer to 60/40 or even 50/50 depending on which mirror you check.

That’s not “a few haters.” That’s a deeply divided audience. That’s half the people who bothered to react saying “no thank you.”

And here’s the kicker: this is before anyone has played the game. This is pure, unfiltered reaction to the concept. Not the bugs. Not the performance issues. Not the microtransactions. The idea of God of War: Laufey is enough to make half of YouTube click the thumbs-down button.

Jaffe predicted this. “It’s dead,” he said. “That game is not going to do well for what they expected to do.”

He might be wrong about the quality. He might be wrong about the sales (a God of War logo will sell copies no matter what). But he’s not wrong about the reception. The fans have spoken. And half of them are not happy.

Can Laufey Be Saved? (Probably Not, But Let’s Pretend)

Is there any hope for God of War: Laufey? Could it surprise everyone and become a beloved entry in the franchise?

Maybe. But the path is narrow. Very narrow. And it involves Sony Santa Monica doing something they’ve shown no interest in doing: listening.

Here’s what Laufey would need to succeed against all odds:

1. A playable Kratos segment. Even ten minutes. Even a flashback. Even a post-credits scene. Fans need to know he’s not forgotten.

2. Tone down the cube. Frank can stay, but he needs to be less… Frank. Less jokes. Less whimsy. More God of War. Make him weird and unsettling, not cute and quirky.

3. Commit to a single mythology. The “Everywhen” is a mistake. Pick Egyptian. Commit to Egyptian. Do it right. The buffet approach satisfies no one.

4. Acknowledge the controversy. Don’t pretend everything is fine. Don’t call fans toxic. Say “we hear you” and mean it.

5. David Jaffe cameo. Put him in the game as a drunk blacksmith or a crazy prophet. Make him say the line: “This looks like shit.” Then have Frank look at the camera. Fourth wall break. Instant redemption.

Will any of this happen? Almost certainly not. Sony Santa Monica will double down. They’ll release the game they want to release. And fans will either buy it grudgingly or skip it entirely.

But hope, as they say, is the last thing to die. Right after Kratos. And maybe Frank.

Everyone Is Angry for a Reason

God of War: Laufey is not a bad game. I can’t say that because I haven’t played it. Nobody has.

But God of War: Laufey is a controversial one. Deeply, fundamentally controversial. Because it challenges what fans believe the franchise should be. And when the creator himself — David Jaffe — steps into the ring and calls it “uninspired” and “dull,” the controversy stops being about opinions and starts being about legacy.

The jelly cube? That’s just the cherry on top of a very strange, very expensive, very confusing sundae.

Everyone is angry about God of War: Laufey for different reasons. Some hate the absence of Kratos. Some hate Frank. Some hate the mythology smoothie. Some hate what it represents in the culture war. And some just hate change.

But here’s the thing about anger: it means people still care.

When fans stop being angry, that’s when a franchise is truly dead. Laufey isn’t dead yet. It’s just fighting for its life against a creator’s brutal verdict, a jelly cube nobody asked for, and a war most people didn’t even know they were part of.

If you’ve been anywhere near gaming Twitter, Reddit, or YouTube in the last 72 hours, you’ve seen the chaos.
