Not just any November — the same month Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to dominate the industry. Most publishers treat that window like a minefield, pulling release dates months in advance. But Coin Crew is doing something rare: it is charging straight into the heart of the storm.

The announcement came during a Gamescom preview, where Salyh and senior game designer Jacob Surovsky outlined why their small co-op puzzle game can thrive in the shadow of the biggest entertainment product of the decade. “Obviously, time will tell, but it’s so big that I think it’s OK,” Salyh said. “I think a smaller indie title can coexist with it. It’s harder to compete with a lot of peer titles in September than knowing we’re going to be the little guy in the room with the big guy.” Surovsky added, only half-joking, “It gives us time to add the carjacking mechanic to our game, which we were really sorely missing.”

Why launch an indie game in the same month as Grand Theft Auto VI?

Coin Crew Games believes an indie title can coexist with Grand Theft Auto VI because the two games serve fundamentally different audiences and play experiences. The studio notes that competing against a slate of similar mid-tier releases in September is far riskier than standing out as the only notable co-op puzzle game in a month dominated by a single open-world behemoth. The rising demand for hands-on, socially driven co-op experiences — the so-called “friendslop” trend — gives Escape Academy 2 a distinct lane that GTA VI cannot fill.

The origin story: From pandemic isolation to co-op escape rooms

Coin Crew Games was founded by real-life escape room designers who wanted to translate the thrill of physical puzzle rooms into a digital format. The original Escape Academy launched in 2022, a direct product of COVID-19 isolation when stuffing friends into a small room was impossible. An Xbox Game Pass deal helped the game find its audience, and continued support through DLCs like Tournament of Puzzles let the team experiment with competitive modes and procedural puzzle generation. But those expansions were only a taste of what the developers truly wanted to build.

“When we launched Escape Academy, we got so much positive feedback,” Salyh recalled. “We were able to continue growing the game and the player base with the DLCs. Eventually it got to a point where we realized we now actually do have the chops to pull off some of these bigger ideas. And we heard so much good feedback from the community on what they would want to see in more content that we realized that this is bigger than just another DLC. There’s a whole sequel here.”

That sequel, Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School, represents a leap in ambition. Instead of a series of disconnected puzzle rooms, the game now features a fully explorable campus. Players can roam the academy, interact with characters, and stumble upon puzzles integrated into the environment. Salyh compares the structure to Banjo-Kazooie — a hub world where collectibles (in this case, school credits) unlock new areas. The narrative is heavier, the cast larger, and the puzzles more deeply woven into the setting.

A changing landscape for puzzle games

The team’s confidence is also buoyed by recent trends in the puzzle genre. When Coin Crew was early in development for Escape Academy 2, Blue Prince — last year’s breakout hit about navigating an ever-shifting manor — validated a key design bet. “Something that Blue Prince did validate was we had this big hanging question of, ‘We want to build this whole big campus. Can we count on players gaining a level of familiarity with this environment that has puzzles integrated into it where things aren’t going to go over their head?’” Surovsky explained. “Blue Prince comes out, which is like, pay attention to every room, memorize all the rooms, learn this environment super well. Blue Prince has now primed players to be prepared to enter a campus where every corner has puzzle information in it and be totally locked in.”

Further inspiration came from Animal Well, a Metroidvania with deep puzzle layers that won critical acclaim. Salyh sees puzzle gaming as a non-zero-sum market. “The more puzzle games there are, the more people start playing puzzle games and recommending other puzzle games.” That rising tide lifts all boats, and Escape Academy 2 is poised to ride that wave.

The co-op renaissance: Friendslop, Big Walk, and social hangouts

The timing also aligns with a broader multiplayer renaissance. Games like Lethal Company and Big Walk have proven that players crave experiences focused on genuine social interaction rather than competitive shootouts. This “friendslop” era — a term that affectionately describes messy, chaotic co-op fun — has turned into one of the healthiest trends in modern gaming. Surovsky sees Escape Academy 2 fitting squarely into that movement.

“Co-op really gives this great opportunity to play with your friends, to see your friends in a new light. This pro-social gaming is really being embraced right now,” he said. “Something that puzzles really lends itself well to in the co-op space is it allows you to show your friends how cool and smart you are. It allows for fun moments of, ‘I got it. Do you got it?’”

Coin Crew designed the sequel with this dynamic in mind. Instead of making every puzzle solvable by one person, the team created a diversity of challenges that let different players shine depending on their background. During a playtest of a chemistry-themed puzzle, two players who happened to be chemists immediately took charge. “Those are the kinds of experiences that we want to create,” Surovsky said. “It’s less about showing off and more about giving friends a fun way to interact and communicate.”

Salyh sums up the studio’s philosophy: “We’re not really just making a game; we’re really making a hangout for people. When you go to Dave & Buster’s, you’re going to play games, but what you’re really doing is hanging out with your friends. So whenever we’re designing a game, we always think: What are we facilitating here?”

Why November makes sense, despite GTA VI

Conventional wisdom says to steer clear of Rockstar’s juggernaut. Yet Coin Crew argues that the month of November offers a clear identity. “It’s harder to compete with a lot of peer titles in September,” Salyh reiterated. In a crowded September, an indie game can easily get buried under dozens of similar releases. In November, there is one giant — and that giant cannot satisfy every player’s desire for a co-op puzzle adventure.

The studio also points to a shift in what players value. Surovsky noted, “What we’re holding to a higher level now in games is shifting. It was graphical fidelity, and now graphics are incredible. Now we’re seeing this sort of friendslop co-op thing arise. The graphics are much simpler, but it’s facilitating this gameplay that’s a lot more reliant on friends and social dynamics. I think people are starting to go, ‘We’ve had this beautiful feast of graphics. My eyes have been filled. Now let me fill my heart.’”

That emotional hunger is exactly what Escape Academy 2 aims to satisfy. While Grand Theft Auto VI will undoubtedly dominate headlines and mindshare, there remains a substantial audience that wants a different kind of experience — one that can be shared on a couch, solved collaboratively, and cherished as a memory rather than merely a spectacle.

What to expect from Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School

Release date: November 2026 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

Co-op focus: Full split-screen multiplayer, allowing two players to tackle puzzles together in real time.

Open campus design: A larger, connected world where puzzles are embedded in the environment, not just isolated rooms.

Narrative depth: A stronger story with more characters, dialogue, and progression systems inspired by collect-a-thon platformers.

Post-launch plans: The studio has a track record of supporting its games with DLC, so expect additional content after release.

The game does not attempt to replicate the chaotic “friendslop” style of Lethal Company but rather offers a finely crafted puzzle journey. Still, the philosophical overlap is clear: both approaches prioritize social bonding over graphical horsepower.

The broader significance: Indie courage in a blockbuster world

Coin Crew’s decision to launch alongside GTA VI is more than a scheduling curiosity — it is a statement about the health of the indie ecosystem. For years, publishers have treated November as a no-go zone whenever Rockstar or Activision stakes a claim. But the success of titles like Big Walk and Blue Prince shows that audiences are fragmenting. A single mega-game can no longer absorb all attention. Social media, streaming, and community-driven discovery allow niche experiences to flourish even when a colossus dominates the charts.

Surovsky framed the parallel in optimistic terms: “It’s kind of the Blue Prince conversation through a different lens. It’s exciting to be releasing at a time where people are going to be building up their appetite for open-world exploration. Great! Come explore our world! Here’s your warmup!”

That warmup could be exactly what many players need. When the sheer scale of Grand Theft Auto VI becomes overwhelming — or when a player longs for a game that rewards close observation and communication rather than trigger speed — Escape Academy 2 will be waiting. And if Coin Crew’s gamble pays off, it may encourage other small teams to stop fearing the shadow of the industry’s biggest releases and instead light their own torches.

The halls of Escape Academy open this November.
