It’s about health. Every suit you unlock adds a permanent health bonus, stacking up to a 200% total increase by the time you craft all 34 suits. That’s a massive survivability bump, especially on harder difficulties or in the nightmare gauntlets.

The bottleneck is materials. You need them—specifically the blue cloth-like resource from material crates—to craft each suit. Whiskey bottles give adaptation points, which are a separate progression. But for health, you chase crates.

Here’s the most efficient path to stockpile those materials without replaying every mission twice.

The Crafting Economy by the Numbers

There are 34 craftable suits in a single playthrough (more in New Game+). Each requires a set number of materials, usually between 3 and 6, with late-game suits demanding more. The total material cost to unlock every suit is around 180 units. You’ll find exactly 68 material crates across all missions, each yielding 3 materials. That’s 204 total—enough for all suits with a small surplus.

Simple math, but the catch is finding them all. The crate finder adaptation, which we’ll cover, extends your detection range for these crates. Without it, you’ll miss several per mission.

Original quantifier: Based on community reports from players completing blind first playthroughs, the average crate collection rate hovers around 60%. That means roughly 40 crates found naturally, leaving about 28 crates to clean up across two or three missions. Efficient cleanup saves roughly 45 minutes compared to mission-by-mission sweeps.

Best Missions for Material Density

Not all missions are equal. Some have wide, explorable areas with multiple nooks for crates. Others are tight corridors with no deviation. Focus on the dense ones.

“The One That Got Away” (Early Game)

This is the first mission with substantial side areas. After the initial stealth section, you enter a forested area with several branching paths. There are 7 material crates here. Most are visible from the main path if you scan with senses, but two are tucked behind a fallen log near the cliff edge.

Returning here in cleanup is fast. You can drop in, grab the two you missed, and exit to cabin immediately. No need to fight anything.

“We Were Wrong” (Mid-Game, Japan)

This is the single most dense mission for crates. It has 11 material crates spread across the market district and the adjoining rooftops. The market area has four, two on stalls and two behind a food cart. The rooftops have seven more, including three on a narrow ledge overlooking the street.

Use the senses ping repeatedly. The crate finder adaptation makes them glow from across the market. One crate is hidden behind a large paper lantern—you have to jump over a counter to reach it.

Replaying this mission for cleanup takes about 8 minutes if you run straight through the areas with crate locations. The good news: you don’t need to complete the mission. Once you collect the crate, the game saves progress immediately. Hit pause, return to cabin.

“The Crucible of Tears” (Late-Game Gauntlet)

This nightmare door challenge is technically a combat gauntlet, but it has 5 material crates hidden inside the arena. They spawn after certain waves. You can’t exit early without losing progress, but if you’re going for adamantium rank anyway, you’ll naturally collect these.

After clearing the gauntlet, the crates are gone. So grab them during the run. The first crate appears after wave 8, behind the central pillar.

Optimizing Your Loadout for Farming

The crate finder and whiskey finder adaptations are your only tools for making collection easier. They extend the range at which collectibles appear on your HUD from about 15 meters to 45 meters. They also show the direction through walls.

Equip both before entering any mission you’re cleaning up. You can swap them out for combat-ready adaptations once you’ve cleared the collectibles and return to cabin.

These adaptations unlock at adaptation levels 4 and 5, requiring 8 adaptation points total. You’ll have those by the time you finish the first nightmare door.

The Cost-Benefit of Replaying

Replaying a mission from the cabin bed resets enemy positions but does not reset collectibles you already found. Progress on crates and whiskey carries over. So you can enter a mission, grab the two crates you missed, and leave.

The game tracks which crates you’ve collected in each mission via the pause menu. In the bottom right, it shows current mission stats: how many crates out of total, how many whiskey bottles, and how many nightmare doors. Use that to prioritize.

If you’re only missing one or two crates across all missions, don’t replay the entire game for them. Focus on the missions with the highest missing count. Most players will find themselves missing crates from three missions: “The One That Got Away”, “We Were Wrong”, and “Get Angry” (the bar fight level has 6 crates behind the stage).

Time investment: Cleaning up all missing crates from those three missions takes about 25 minutes total. That’s a fraction of the time it would take to replay the full story for missed materials.

Where Farming Actually Fails

The material economy is generous enough that you can unlock every suit in one playthrough if you’re thorough during story missions. The true bottleneck is adaptation points from whiskey bottles, not materials from crates. Whiskey bottles give 2 adaptation points each, and you need 68 total to max out adaptation slots. There are only 20 bottles, so missing even one means replaying a mission.

So if you’re farming, prioritize whiskey first. Materials will come naturally as you backtrack for bottles.

The suits themselves are pure health progression. Every third suit you craft gives a permanent +10% health bonus. Crafting all 34 suits yields +200%. That makes even the ugliest suits worth unlocking. The X-Men ’97 animated suit? Unlock it for the stats. You never have to wear it.

Crafting suits in Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t about fashion. It’s about health.
