Watch the videos. Unlock the right skills. Then you jump into a fight against five Reavers, a sniper, and a guy with a minigun, and suddenly that carefully planned build feels like it was written by someone who played a different game.

So here’s the gap between what the internet says works in Marvel’s Wolverine and what actually works when you’re getting your adamantium skeleton ventilated.

1. “Parry Everything” – Until You Can’t

The common advice: spam L1 whenever an enemy glows. Accurate parries build stagger, build rage, and make you look like a Souls veteran.

Where it fails: Red power attacks cannot be parried. Period. And when a heavy enemy winds up that red fist, hitting L1 just gets you clobbered. Worse, some enemies chain attacks so fast that even a perfect parry on the first hit leaves you eating the second.

What works instead: Forget “parry everything.” Train your eyes to distinguish yellow (reckless, parryable) from red (dodge only). Against groups, use a quick dodge roll to reset positioning, then punish with a dodge retaliate. You’ll build more stagger and take less damage than trying to parry a blender.

2. “Barrage Builds Rage Fast” – Unless You’re Interrupted

Standard tip: stagger an enemy, then mash square for a barrage. It fills your rage meter quickly and looks brutal.

Where it fails: Barrage locks you in place. If another enemy swings at you during the animation, you eat the hit and lose your rage buildup. This happens constantly in the nightmare gauntlets and any encounter with more than three enemies.

What works instead: Use knee breaker to stagger, then follow with a healing strike (triangle). The healing strike is faster, gives health back, and builds nearly as much rage. If you must barrage, do it only when the enemy is isolated or you’ve cleared nearby threats first. The combo ender adaptation (combo ender recharge) is more reliable for consistent rage.

3. “Unlock Healing Strike First” – But You Need Stagger to Use It

Every early-game guide shouts: get healing strike at level three. It heals, it damages, it solves everything.

Where it fails: Healing strike only works on staggered enemies. In the first few hours, you don’t have reliable ways to stagger. You’re still learning enemy tells, and most basic enemies die too fast to bother. The result is a skill you can’t consistently trigger.

What works instead: Prioritize stagger leap (level two) before healing strike. Hold triangle to charge a leap that staggers most small enemies instantly. Now healing strike has something to work with. If you’re taking too much damage before you can combo, grab sprint block (level four) – it blocks ranged attacks while sprinting, which is absurdly useful against those snipers you keep ignoring.

4. “Lock-On to All Enemies” – Welcome to Camera Hell

Setting the lock-on to “All” sounds like a godsend. Press L3, and the camera sticks to the nearest enemy, automatically switching when one dies.

Where it fails: The camera swings wildly. You lose track of other enemies. You try to parry an attack from behind and face the wrong direction because the lock-on snapped to a guy twenty feet away. In tight quarters, this is a fast way to eat a rocket.

What works instead: Set lock-on to “On Screen” (available in gameplay settings). This locks onto only enemies visible on your screen, with no auto-switch. You control the target. It’s not as hands-off, but it keeps your camera stable and lets you dodge the attacks you can actually see coming.

5. “Kick Enemies Into Walls” – The Wall Isn’t Always There

Classic tip: hold square for a thrust kick, boot an enemy into a wall, watch them stagger, then barrage or healing strike.

Where it fails: Many arenas are wide open – forests, rooftops, large warehouses. No walls nearby means no stagger. You just kick someone who stumbles back two feet and shrugs. Also, some enemies (heavies, elite Reavers) barely react to a single kick.

What works instead: Use the kick primarily to break guards and interrupt attacks. If a wall is there, great – follow with a barrage. If not, chain the kick into a triangle leap attack (stagger leap) for immediate stagger. That combo works anywhere and doesn’t depend on geometry.

6. “Equip Whiskey Finder and Crate Finder Permanently” – You’re Wasting a Slot

Adaptations like whiskey finder and crate maker increase your collectible radar range. Guides recommend keeping them on to avoid backtracking.

Where it fails: You only have ten adaptation slots. During a boss fight, those finder adaptations do nothing. You’re missing out on rage intimidation, extended parry, chain crit – perks that actually help you survive. And collectibles aren’t hard to spot without them; the game already pings audio and visual cues when you’re near.

What works instead: Keep them equipped only during exploration, then swap them out before any major combat encounter. The cabin menu lets you change adaptations freely. Use the pause screen to check your current mission’s collectible count – you’ll see exactly how many crates and bottles are left without the finder perks.

7. “Relentless Is Mandatory” – But Its Cooldown Is Brutal

Relentless gives you a healing factor boost for a few seconds. Upgraded, it triggers automatically at low health. Every build guide lists it as essential.

Where it fails: The cooldown is long. In the nightmare gauntlets, you might face five waves before it’s ready again. If you rely on it as your only heal, you’re dead when it’s on cooldown. Also, the automatic trigger at low health (level three) doesn’t always save you – sometimes a follow-up attack kills you before the heal kicks in.

What works instead: Use healing parry and healing dodge adaptations instead. They give smaller, consistent heals every time you successfully parry or dodge. These trigger much more often (every fight has dozens of parry/dodge opportunities) and don’t have cooldowns. Pair them with the enraged recharge adaptation for faster special technique cooldowns, and you’ll never miss Relentless.

The real secret the guides don’t emphasize enough: the game’s individual difficulty sliders. You can tweak enemy health, enemy damage, and parry timing independently. If standard advice makes combat feel wrong, don’t grind through it – adjust the sliders until the rhythm clicks. That’s not cheating. That’s playing smarter.

You’ve read the guides. Watch the videos. Unlock the right skills.
