The rewards are not worth your time, and the game plays better when you ignore the collectible hunt entirely. Most reviewers tip-toe around this, afraid to say the emperor has no clothes. I am not.

The Math Doesn’t Add Up

Let’s be specific. Finding all 20 whiskey bottles earns you 40 adaptation points total. That sounds useful until you realize you can max out your 10 adaptation strands just by completing nightmare doors and fighting through the story. The whiskey finder adaptation itself costs a slot you could use for something that actually helps in combat. You are spending hours scouring linear levels for a resource the game already hands you through normal play.

Material crates are worse. There are 68 of them. They unlock suits. Every few suits give you a permanent health increase, eventually reaching 200% maximum health. But the health boosts are incremental and completely unnecessary. I finished the game on default difficulty with no health upgrades and never felt underpowered. The suits themselves are cosmetic except for the health bonus. If you are not a completionist, the crate hunt is busywork disguised as content.

And the nightmare doors? There are 14 of them. They give adaptation points and exclusive suits like Halvarine and Future Fugitive. The gauntlet challenges require adamantium rank (the highest) to unlock those suits. That means you must endure 25 waves of enemies in a horde mode, multiple times, with no checkpoints. The combat is already repetitive without this padded grind.

What You Actually Sacrifice

Every minute you spend hunting glowing objects is a minute not spent fighting. Wolverine’s combat is the core appeal—the brutal animations, the rage meter, the parry system. The collectibles pull you out of that flow. You stop to sniff for whiskey, you climb awkward geometry for a crate, you load into a nightmarish trial that feels like a chore. The game is linear and short (around 15 hours for the story). Padding that with collectible cleanup dilutes the experience.

The platinum trophy requires smashing 100 XP caches, reaching level 36, and finding every collectible. None of these are fun. The XP caches are easy to miss, the whiskey bottles require scent trails that clutter your screen, and the material crates need you to replay missions backward because you missed one. The game help feature tells you exactly what you missed, which proves the system is designed to waste your time, not test your skill.

The Counterargument Falls Flat

Defenders will say the health boosts let you survive harder difficulties. But you can beat the game on the hardest setting without a single suit upgrade. The healing factor, parry window, and rage mechanics are generous enough. The real challenge in high difficulties is enemy damage and attack patterns, not your health pool. Extra health only extends fights you already manage well.

They will also argue that collectibles reward exploration. But the game is a corridor. There is no open world to explore—just set pieces connected by thin paths. The “exploration” is walking off the obvious path to find a blue crate tucked behind a tree. That is not discovery; it is following a checklist.

My Position: Play the Game, Not the List

I am not saying never touch a whiskey bottle. If you stumble on one, grab it. But do not replay missions. Do not equip crate finder adaptations. Do not stress about the platinum. The game respects your time when you ignore its busywork. The combat tightens up, the pacing improves, and you actually feel like Wolverine instead of a janitor cleaning up objectives.

Insomniac already acknowledged the scent trail complaints and toned down the opacity. They know the collectible systems are intrusive. The next logical step is to let players ignore them entirely without penalty. Until then, you have permission to skip them.

Stop searching every corner for whiskey bottles and material crates in Marvel’s Wolverine.
