It does exactly what the name suggests: the camera automatically rotates during combat to keep enemies in view. The game’s tooltip says it “focuses the camera to automatically rotate to assist with keeping enemies in view during combat.” For many players, this is the difference between tracking a fight and fighting the camera.

What Combat Camera Rotation Assist Actually Does

This setting is not a simple on/off toggle for aim assist. It modifies the camera’s behavior only when combat is active. While exploring, the camera remains under full manual control. Once you take damage or enter an enemy’s aggression radius, the system starts nudging the rotation to keep the nearest visible threat within the frame. It does not lock your character’s orientation like the lock-on system (which is a separate setting under gameplay). Instead, it subtly adjusts the view angle.

The game’s camera is notoriously tight. The character model occupies a large portion of the screen, and enemies regularly sprint off-screen. The narrow field of view (FOV) is a known complaint in community guides. The rotation assist tries to compensate for this by preemptively turning the camera toward movement cues — enemy dashes, ranged attacks, or flanking attempts. It is not perfect. It can lag behind fast attacks or overcorrect when multiple enemies surround you.

Interaction with Lock-On and Manual Camera Control

Experienced players often configure the lock-on setting to “all” or “on screen” (the latter is the recommended option for most). The camera rotation assist operates independently of lock-on. Lock-on forces your character to face the target and centers the camera on it. Rotation assist, by contrast, gently repositions the world view without forcing a hard lock. This means you can still control the camera with right-stick inputs, but the assist will fight you if you try to look away from combat.

The real trade-off appears during parry sequences. A yellow attack (a reckless attack) requires you to face the attacker to parry. If the rotation assist swings the camera toward a different enemy at the wrong moment, you might miss the parry window. Players who rely on muscle-memory parries may prefer to disable the assist entirely and handle camera positioning manually, especially if they use a pro controller with back paddles (like the Scuf Omega, where face buttons are mapped to paddles for thumb-free camera control). In that setup, the assist is redundant and can create directional conflicts.

For controllers without back buttons, the assist is more useful. It reduces the need to take your thumb off the right stick to press dodge or attack, which is a common problem given the game’s tight FOV and fast enemy movement. The trade-off for convenience is a slight loss of precision in camera placement.

When the Assist Works and When It Fails

The setting performs best in open arenas with enemies spread across a wide area. It keeps the action visible without constant manual adjustment. In tight corridors or boss fights with telegraphed attacks, it can be detrimental. During the Omega Red boss fight in the first chapter, the assist sometimes rotates the camera into walls, obscuring the boss’s wind-up animation. That specific fight punishes missed parries heavily.

There is also an edge case that the current implementation does not handle well: multi-enemy parry chains where you need to face a specific direction to parry a yellow attack. The auto-rotation can align you away from the incoming hit. A future update might filter this assist to only activate when no parry prompt is active, but as of the v1.001.005 patch, the setting remains a blunt instrument.

Recommended Configuration

If you are playing on default controls, leave combat camera rotation assist on. The reduction in manual camera effort outweighs the occasional misalignment, especially during the first playthrough when you are still learning enemy attack patterns. If you use a controller with back buttons and have mapped face buttons to paddles, turn it off. The freed thumb control gives you better camera precision, and the assist only gets in the way of your parry timing.

For players who want to fine-tune the experience, also consider adjusting the look sensitivity. The default value of 5 is sluggish. Bump it to 7 or 8 when using the assist, so you can override the auto-rotation quickly when needed. With the assist off, a sensitivity of 6 to 7 works for most players.

One scenario where the assist is outright harmful: nightmare gauntlet challenges that require rapid target switching. In those modes, the assist’s lag can cause you to miss a critical strike opportunity. Veteran players grinding for adamantium rank should disable it before entering those trials.

Marvel’s Wolverine includes a setting called combat camera rotation assist, buried in the Camera section of the options menu.
