Then you launch Control Resonant — nothing. The game ignores the controller entirely. This is a known issue on PC, and it’s almost always fixable without reinstalling Windows.

Most fixes take less than five minutes. Start with the first one, test after each step, and move down the list. You’ll probably hit a working solution before step 5.

1. Switch Between Steam Input Settings

Steam Input is the most common culprit. Open Steam, right-click Control Resonant, go to Properties > Controller. You’ll see “Use default settings” selected. Change it to Disable Steam Input and launch the game.

If that doesn’t help, go back and try Enable Steam Input. Some builds of the game only respond to one or the other. Relaunch each time.

2. Remove Extra HID-Compliant Game Controllers

Windows sometimes keeps old driver profiles for controllers you no longer use. These conflict with your active controller.

Open Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices. Look for multiple entries named HID-compliant game controller. Right-click each one and select Disable device — but leave one active. Disconnect your controller first, disable the extras, then reconnect the controller. You should see only one HID-compliant entry.

This fix also works for players with flight sticks, racing wheels, or arcade sticks plugged in simultaneously. Unplug those USB peripherals before launching the game.

3. Use a Wired Connection

Bluetooth introduces latency and sometimes outright fails in certain Unreal Engine titles. Control Resonant is one of them.

Connect your controller via USB cable. If it’s an Xbox controller, use the official Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows — third-party Bluetooth dongles cause dropouts. For PlayStation controllers, a standard USB-C cable works fine.

4. Update Your Controller Firmware

Microsoft and Sony both release firmware updates that fix compatibility issues.

Xbox: Install the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store. Connect your controller via USB, open the app, and check for updates under the three-dot menu.

PlayStation (DualSense or DualShock 4): Download the PlayStation Accessories app from the official PlayStation website. Connect the controller, and the app will detect it and offer firmware updates if available.

5. Disable In-Game Overlays (Especially Nvidia and Discord)

Overlays hook into the rendering pipeline. That hooks into the input pipeline too. Control Resonant is sensitive to this.

Turn off Steam Overlay for the game in Properties > General > uncheck “Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game”. Then disable Discord overlay in Discord settings. If you use Nvidia app, go to its settings and toggle off Nvidia Overlay.

If you have MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, or any frame-rate monitoring tool, close them entirely. These tools inject directly into the game process and frequently break controller detection.

6. Set the Correct Default Controller in Windows

Windows lets you choose which controller is primary. This matters if you have multiple input devices connected.

Search for “Set up USB game controllers” in Windows search. Click Advanced. From the drop-down, select Xbox 360 Controller (for Xbox pads) or DualSense (for PlayStation). Click OK and relaunch the game.

7. Delete Virtual Controller Software

Tools like vJoy, reWASD, JoyToKey, and AntiMicroX create virtual controllers that Windows sees as real hardware. Control Resonant can bind to the wrong one.

Uninstall any virtual joystick software. Restart your PC. Then test the game with nothing running in the background.

8. Launch Steam in Big Picture Mode

Big Picture Mode handles controller input differently. It reinitializes the input stack, which can resolve detection failures.

In the top-right corner of Steam, click the Big Picture icon (two arrows forming a square). Enter Big Picture Mode, navigate to Control Resonant in your library, and launch it from there.

If this works, the issue is specifically with Steam’s normal overlay or gamepad configuration. Keep Big Picture Mode as your launcher for this game.

9. Force DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 in Launch Options

Rarely, the game’s default graphics API conflicts with controller polling. Forcing a specific API can bypass this.

Right-click Control Resonant in Steam > Properties > General. In Launch Options, type
-dx11
codecodecodecode and launch. If that doesn’t work, try
-dx12
codecodecodecode or
-d3d11
codecodecodecode. One of these three flags typically resolves the issue.

The controller problem is almost never a hardware failure — it’s a configuration collision. Steam Input, leftover HID profiles, and overlay software are the top three causes. If none of these nine fixes work, the issue may be specific to your controller model or firmware tier. Check the game’s Steam community forums for posts from players using the exact same controller. That’s where edge cases surface.

There is one scenario where no PC fix will work: controllers that use an older, non-XInput protocol (like some third-party Switch controllers) may lack driver support entirely. In that case, a hardware upgrade is the only path forward.

Your controller works fine in other games.
