You try different prompts. You restart the session. You switch models.

The error keeps happening.

Here’s what nobody told you: the error isn’t random. It’s predictable. And it comes from one misunderstanding almost everyone brings to Claude Code.

The mistake: treating Claude Code like a chat interface instead of an agentic coding tool with structural requirements.

When you ask ChatGPT a question, it reads your message and answers. When you ask Claude Code to build something, it has to navigate your file system, understand your project structure, follow conventions, and execute multi-step tasks. That’s fundamentally different. And the errors reflect that difference.

Let’s fix this.

What Actually Goes Wrong (and Why)

Claude Code errors fall into three buckets. Every single one traces back to that foundational misunderstanding.

1. “Claude Code keeps rewriting my files”

This is the #1 complaint. You ask Claude Code to add one feature, and it rewrites three unrelated files. It breaks things that worked.

Why this happens: You didn’t define boundaries. Claude Code sees your entire project as its workspace. Without explicit instructions about what to touch and what to leave alone, it assumes everything is fair game.

The fix isn’t a better prompt. It’s a project-level instruction file.

Create a file called
CLAUDE.md
codecode in your project root. Inside, write exactly which files and directories Claude Code should modify and which it should never touch.

“`

CLAUDE.md – Project Rules

Do NOT modify

/src/config/* (configuration files)

/tests/fixtures/* (test data)

/package.json (dependency management)

Always reference

/src/types/index.ts for type definitions

/docs/architecture.md for project structure

Coding conventions

Use named exports, not default exports

Prefer functional components over classes

Every function needs a JSDoc comment

“`

Claude Code reads this file at the start of every session. It follows these rules. File rewriting errors drop by 80% once you set this up.

2. “Claude Code can’t find my dependencies”

You ask Claude Code to use a library that’s clearly installed. It insists the library doesn’t exist. It tries to install a different version and breaks your build.

Why this happens: Claude Code doesn’t automatically scan your entire environment. It looks at your current working directory and whatever context you’ve given it. It doesn’t know your full dependency tree unless you tell it.

The counterintuitive answer most people get wrong: The fix isn’t providing more context. It’s providing structured context. Dumping your entire
package-lock.json
codecode into the chat makes things worse — it buries the relevant information.

Instead, add this to your
CLAUDE.md
codecode:

“`

Available dependencies

All dependencies are listed in /package.json.

Do not install new packages without asking first.

Run
npm ls
codecode to check if a package exists before suggesting alternatives.

“`

Then, when you start a session, add one explicit instruction: “Read package.json first before suggesting any changes.”

Claude Code will check the file, understand what’s available, and stop hallucinating missing dependencies.

3. “Claude Code gives me code that doesn’t compile”

This one frustrates people most. The code looks right. It follows the logic you described. But it won’t compile.

Why this happens: Claude Code writes code based on your description, not your existing codebase. It makes assumptions about your types, your imports, your function signatures. Those assumptions are often wrong.

The fix: give Claude Code something to imitate.

Before asking Claude Code to write a new function, find an existing function in your project that does something similar. Tell Claude Code: “Use the same pattern as
src/utils/formatUser.ts
codecode.”

Better yet, add a reference section to your
CLAUDE.md
codecode:

“`

Reference patterns

When writing new files, follow the pattern in:

/src/services/userService.ts (service layer)

/src/components/UserProfile.tsx (React components)

/src/hooks/useAuth.ts (custom hooks)

“`

Claude Code will open those files, analyze the patterns, and mirror them. The code it produces will match your codebase, not generic best practices.

The Three-Step Fix That Works Every Time

You don’t need to memorize twenty different error solutions. You need one process that prevents most errors from happening.

Step 1: Set up
CLAUDE.md
codecode before you start coding.

This is non-negotiable. Without it, Claude Code works blind. With it, Claude Code works like a developer who read your entire project documentation before writing a single line.

Step 2: Start every session with a context handoff.

Before asking for anything, paste this:

“`

I’m working on [project name].

Read my CLAUDE.md file.

Check the current state of [specific file or feature].

Then tell me what you understand about the project.

“`

Wait for its summary. Correct any misunderstandings. Then give it the actual task. This two-minute step saves hours of debugging.

Step 3: One task per session.

Claude Code maintains context within a session. When you switch tasks mid-session, it carries over assumptions from the previous task. Those assumptions cause errors.

Finish one task completely. End the session. Start a new one for the next task.

When General Advice Fails

Here’s the edge case: you’ve done all three steps, and Claude Code still errors. The error is in a genuinely novel part of your codebase — a pattern Claude Code has never seen before.

In this case, the fix is counterintuitive. Don’t explain the pattern in words. Show it. Write one small example file yourself. Point Claude Code to it. Then ask it to extend the pattern.

Claude Code learns from examples far better than from descriptions. A single concrete file beats five paragraphs of instructions.

What This Means for How You Work

Claude Code isn’t a smarter ChatGPT. It’s a different tool entirely. Treat it like a new developer joining your team — give it onboarding docs, show it examples, define its boundaries. The errors aren’t failures. They’re signals that you haven’t set up those structures yet.

Set up
CLAUDE.md
codecode today. Start your next session with a context handoff. Watch how many errors simply stop happening.

You spend hours debugging a Claude Code error. You try different prompts. You restart the session.
