Every player finds them eventually. Most miss the exact sequence that minimizes backtracking and wasted zone XP. Here is every dimensional fault, what it unlocks, and the order that saves hours.

Control Resonant’s dimensional faults are optional side quests marked by giant holographic images of Jesse Faden. Each awards a new traversal ability that respects movement within a specific zone and across the entire map. There are three faults that grant core traversal upgrades, plus one return-to-prologue area that yields a power upgrade. The rest reward zone XP, materials, and an artifact.

West Incursion Zone: Gravity Shift

Location: Parking garage directly north of the zone’s central pylon. Climb to the roof — you can jump on the external scaffolding — then drop through the massive hole in the middle of the garage floor. The side quest “Incursion Fault” starts automatically.

Reward: The shift ability lets Dylan cling to patterned walls and ceilings, reorient his gravity to surfaces marked with the blue-white patterning effect, and travel across vertical or inverted paths. This is not a broad wall-run — it only works on designated surfaces, not every wall in the zone.

Non-obvious: Shift resets fall damage. If you jump off a building and hit a shift surface mid-fall, you take zero damage. Use this to shortcut down from high ledges — aim for any wall fragment near the ground and tap the ability key. The timing is generous.

Also: combat becomes trivial in enclosed spaces. Fight the park resident earlier? You can cling to the ceiling above the boss arena, dodge downward for a charged ground slam, then reset. Most ground-based enemies have no answer to an attacker on the ceiling.

When to grab it

Complete this fault before fighting any resonant boss in West Incursion. The zone’s enemies start at level 3–4, and the parking garage itself contains only a few low-level Hiss. The shift ability then unlocks multiple large resource crates and health upgrades in the zone that were previously unreachable. Clearing those before the first resonant cycle saves you from fighting level-7 spawns later.

Evacuation Zone: Reach

Location: Rail Yard Street Station at the north end of the zone. Enter through the building’s front doors, fight through two rooms of Hiss (level 4–5 if you haven’t beaten a resonant yet), then exit through the hole in the far wall. The “Subway Vault” side quest triggers as you approach the station.

Reward: Reach allows Dylan to grapple onto ethereal orb distortions scattered across every zone. These orbs are the translucent floating spheres you’ve seen everywhere. Press the left thumbstick (or your platform’s equivalent) while looking at one to zip to it.

Non-obvious: You can chain orbs in mid-air. Jump toward one, grappledash to it, then immediately aim and jump toward another. This lets you cross entire blocks without touching the ground. Practice the timing: you must release the grapple before you reach the orb’s position to preserve momentum.

Reach also works in combat. Grapple directly to a Hiss Elevated (the flying enemies) to close distance before they reposition. The grapple interrupt often cancels their ranged attack animation. It applies a brief stagger — long enough to land a charged secondary attack.

Zone-specific use

In Evacuation Zone, reach reveals several hidden platforms. After unlocking it, check the rooftops around the train yard — many hold large resource crates and one power upgrade point.

Central Zone: The Prologue Return

Location: Not technically a dimensional fault, but the boss arena from the prologue (where you first fought the artist resonant) is accessible after completing the opening credits. Head back to the Oldest House exterior, find the entrance to the arena (it’s the collapsed subway tunnel under the construction site), and walk through.

Reward: One power upgrade point on the arena’s back wall. Three of these increase your maximum power (mana for combat abilities). This is the only one available before you leave Central.

Non-obvious: The arena also contains a collectible document on patterning that explains how the resonant entities formed. Read it — it clarifies why the world resets when you beat a resonant boss and gives context for the “resonant cycle” mechanic. Players who skip this note often misunderstand why enemies respawn stronger.

Park Zone: No Fault (But One Hidden Upgrade)

The park zone has no dimensional fault. It does have a power upgrade point inside the central greenhouse, accessible only with fire abilities (ignite or inferno) to burn through the mold-covered door. Get the factory resonant’s fire ability first — without it, you are locked out of this upgrade until you can respec.

Downtown Zone: No Fault (But Two Health Upgrades)

Downtown also lacks a fault. Two health upgrade points sit adjacent to the vendor truck and inside the laundromat puzzle basement. The puzzle requires solving a sequence based on a note in the back room. The reward (health + 250 source) is worth the three minutes.

Underpass Zone: No Fault

The underpass contains no traversal fault. It does hold a resonant boss that awards a combat ability, not a movement upgrade. The only dimensional faults that matter for traversal are the two listed above.

What About the Third Fault?

A third fault appears after the main story’s midpoint. It is not a traversal ability — it rewards an artifact (a passive that increases power recovery by 25% for 15 seconds after an execution). The location is inside a collapsed building in the Evacuation Zone’s southwest corner, accessible only with shift and reach. This fault is missable if you trigger the final resonant cycle before exploring that area.

How to find it

From the Evacuation Zone’s central pylon, head southwest. Look for a building with its roof folded inward. Use shift to walk along the collapsed wall, then reach to the orb at the bottom of the debris pile. The side quest “Hollow Fault” appears.

Recommended Fault Order

This sequence minimizes frustration:

West Incursion: Shift (clear Central first, enemies are level 2; shift opens chests)

Central: Prologue power upgrade (five minutes, no combat)

Evacuation: Reach (enemies level 3-4; reach makes traversal across Manhattan 2x faster)

Hollow Fault artifact (after you have both shift and reach, before beating the third resonant boss)

Following this order means you never need to revisit a zone just for traversal. The time saved is roughly one to two hours of backtracking — based on clearing the same zone twice because you missed a chest that required an ability you didn’t have yet.

One Final Catch

The shift ability works on any surface with the blue-white patterning — including some walls in the Park that are not obviously grabbable. If you see the pattern texture, try it. The game does not mark every usable surface on the map. A dozen hidden chests exist this way, and none of them appear on your HUD until you stand next to them.

Two traversal abilities — gravity shift and reach — transform how you move through Manhattan.
