Most players treat them as optional shortcuts, a convenience to use if they happen to walk past one. That assumption is wrong, and it will cost you hours. These doors are the game’s primary navigation system, and they double as progression gates, puzzle rewards, and map-revealing anchors. Learn to hunt them down early, and the world opens up. Ignore them, and you’ll be spending entire play sessions just crossing from one zone to another.

What Are Fast Travel Doors?

Fast travel doors are large, metallic doors embedded in walls, floors, and ceilings across Manhattan. When unlocked, they appear on your map as a small diamond icon and allow instant travel between any two doors you’ve already activated. There is no global fast travel menu — you must physically walk up to a door to travel to another one you’ve previously unlocked.

Each zone contains at least two doors, with the more complex zones like Central and the West Incursion Zone having four or five. They are not marked on your map until you are within roughly 50 meters of them. The game gives you zero indication of their existence until you get close — which is why so many players miss them entirely on their first pass through a zone.

Why You Need to Unlock Them Immediately

The open world of Control Resonant is deceptive. It looks manageable from ground level, but once you start climbing rooftops, navigating subway tunnels, and chasing side quests across multiple zones, the true scale becomes clear. The West Incursion Zone alone takes nearly three minutes of uninterrupted sprinting to cross from end to end. That’s without enemies.

The counterintuitive truth: the doors are not optional quality-of-life features. They are the intended traversal method. Remedy designed the world with the assumption that players would unlock doors as they explore, then use them to chain travel across zones in seconds. Players who do not prioritize doors effectively double their travel time across the entire game.

How to Unlock a Fast Travel Door

Unlocking a door is simple but not obvious. Walk up to it and interact (the same button you use for opening regular doors). That’s it. There is no key required, no puzzle to solve at the door itself. The challenge is finding it in the first place.

Finding the Doors

There are two reliable methods:

Activate the zone’s radar first. Each zone has a central radar dish and three receivers that must be activated to reveal the map. Unlocking the radar not only clears fog of war, it also places all fast travel door icons onto your map — provided you are close enough to them when the dish activates. If you calibrate the radar from a distance, the doors won’t appear until you get near them.

Follow the resource crate markers. As you level up a zone (by completing world feats, defeating enemies, and opening chests), you unlock zone bonuses. One of the later bonuses marks large resource crates on your map. These crates are almost always positioned right next to a fast travel door. If you see a big crate icon, expect a door nearby.

Two Types of Doors (And Only One Works at First)

Every door in the game falls into one of two categories, and mistaking one for the other is a common early-game frustration.

Standard Doors

Vertical doors that look like normal building entrances but have a metallic frame. These open with a simple interact prompt. They are the majority.

Horizontal Ground Doors

These lie flat on the ground and look like hatches or trap doors. You will find them in parking lots, basements, and open plazas. They cannot be opened by interacting. You must break them open.

Two weapons work: the crush hammer (secondary form) and the ground slam combat ability (unlocked by defeating the West Incursion Zone resonant). The hammer deals blunt damage that breaks the door’s lock mechanism after one or two charged hits. Ground slam also works if you jump high enough and land on the door.

If you did not choose crush as your secondary, you can buy it later from any vendor for living shards. Keep one on hand specifically for these doors.

Strategic Progression with Doors

Early game, you have access to four zones: Central, Downtown, West Incursion Zone, and Evacuation Zone. Each has at least two doors.

Zone

Door Count

First Priority Door Location

Central

3

Behind the diner puzzle (south of the Oldest House)

Downtown

2

Near the auction house entrance

West Incursion

4

On the parking garage roof (requires crush)

Evacuation

2

Railyard Street Station exterior

The Central diner puzzle is especially easy to miss. Inside the diner (visible through the window if the lights are on), you must turn on the power and then activate the appliances in order from smallest to largest. This opens a hidden doorway behind the counter. That room contains a fast travel door.

Once you unlock a door, travel to it imediately and use it to travel back to a familiar location. This registers the second door on your map, giving you a permanent travel point.

Why They’re Also a Secret-Finding Tool

Here is the counterintuitive twist: fast travel doors are not just for mooving around. They are also the best way to find hidden vendors and upgrade points.

Every vendor (ice cream truck) spawns near a door. Every testing facility (FBC lab) is wthin one minute’s walk of a door. And the doors themselves are usally positioned at elevations that let you see large portions of the zone — meaning from a door, you can spot resource crates, side quest starts, and rooptop traversal paths that you would miss from street level.

The map marker for a door is a reliable anchor. If you see a door icon on a rooftop, you know there is a traversal path up there. If you find a door at ground level, there is almost certainly underground content within 30 meters.

Common Misunderstandings

“I don’t need to unlock them early.”

False. The game scales enemy levels eveyr time you defeat a resonant boss. If you wait to unlock doors until after your first resonant kill, the areas between doors become harder to traverse because stronger enemies are in your way. Unlock doors before you fight any resonant in that zone.

“I can just use the map markers to navigate.”

The map is top-down and does not show verticality well. Traveling between zones using only the map often leads to dead ends and false paths. A fast travel door bypasses that entirely.

“They are just for fast travel.”

As explained, they’re also discovery tools. Use them as observation posts after unlocking each one.

One Final Unintuetive Detail

The very last fast travel door you unlock — the one in the Underpass zone after defeating its reonant — is actually the most valuable. It sits at the intersection of three zone borders and gives you a direct path to all three. But the game never highlights it. You have to find it by exploring the far eastern edge of the Underpas after the zone resets. It’s right next to a large resource crate that also lies a health upgrade. Most players never find it on their first playthrough.

Hunt fast travel doors before you hunt anything else.
