You know the basics — dodge, build falter, execute for dominance, use the Gap. But knowing those things won’t stop you from getting flattened by the first Hiss brute you meet. The gap between “knowing the controls” and “actually surviving combat” is wider than it looks. These eight tips close that gap. They are not the obvious ones.

1. Assist Mode Sliders Are a Balance Tool, Not a Shame Button

The game warns you not to use assist mode. Ignore the guilt trip. The sliders for outgoing damage and incoming damage work in both directions — you can make combat harder or easier. But the real trick is fine-tuning. Set outgoing damage to 150% and leave incoming damage at 100%. Combat becomes snappier without trivializing it. Enemies still hit hard; you just hit back harder. That slight edge reduces the grind without removing the tension. Experienced players know this is not “easy mode” — it’s “fun mode.”

2. You Can Cancel Almost Any Recovery Animation — Use It Aggressively

The game doesn’t tell you that every attack’s recovery can be cancelled by dodging, jumping, or using an ability. This is crucial with the crush hammer (secondary form), which is slow. Charge attack, land the hit, then immediately dodge or jump instead of waiting for the hammer to swing back. You can chain charged hammer attacks much faster this way. The same trick works on any weapon with a long end-lag. The non-obvious part: you can cancel recovery into another attack by pressing the button during a dodge — as long as you don’t press attack immediately after the dodge. Delay by a quarter second and you keep your combo chain going. Mistime it and you get a weaker dodge attack. Practice that delay.

3. Unlock Every Aberrant Form Even If You Never Touch It

Every time you unlock a new primary form, secondary form, or combo finisher, your aberrant strength jumps by 5 points. Each point increases your damage multiplier by 1%. That means unlocking all six forms (three primary, three secondary) gives you a flat 30% damage boost before you spend a single upgrade node on the ones you actually use. The living shards cost 4,000 souls each from vendors — but they’re the most efficient investment in the game. Do not save them for “later.” Buy them, unlock every form, and watch your power level rise without any extra grinding.

4. The “Exchange Recents” Feature Lets You Test Before Committing

When you unlock a new weapon form in the Gap, a small option appears at the bottom of the screen: “Exchange Recents.” This refunds your living shards instantly, letting you try different weapons in the training arena for free. You can cycle through all three primary forms and all three secondary forms, test their combos, see which one fits your playstyle. Once you leave the Gap, that refund window closes — your choice locks in. Do not skip this step. Beginners often pick a form they saw in a guide and regret it later. Spend five minutes in the arena. Leave only when you’re sure.

5. Trigger Dominance on Grunts, Then Turn to Bosses

The dominance buff doubles your primary and combo finisher damage for 8 seconds. The obvious use is to fill the falter bar on a big enemy and execute it. But the smarter play: leave a few weak grunts alive, fill your falter bar on one, execute it, then immediately switch to the boss. That doubled damage window is massive against high-health enemies. With the right talent upgrades, dominance can last 15 seconds and reduce incoming damage by 25%. That 8-second window becomes the fight’s rhythm — execute a grunt, shred the heavy, execute another grunt, repeat. Beginners tunnel on the boss and ignore the grunts. That’s backwards.

6. Don’t Kill Resonant Bosses Until You’ve Cleared the Zone’s World Feats

Defeating a resonant boss triggers a resonant cycle — every zone’s enemies respawn tougher, world feats refresh, and new enemy types appear. That sounds like a good thing: more content, more loot. But world feats are the best source of zone XP, and once you’ve cleared all of them in a cycle, they’re gone until the next cycle. If you rush through multiple cycles without doing those feats, you’ll hit late-game zones with low levels and no way to catch up. Before each boss fight, open the map, check each zone’s world feat count, and clear as many as you can. This is especially true for the first two cycles, where the difficulty jump catches most players off guard.

7. Vendor Inventory Refreshes After Each Resonant Cycle — Return for More Living Shards

Each zone has one ice cream truck vendor. They sell a limited stock of resources, including living shards (always 4,000 souls each). After you defeat a resonant boss and the cycle resets, that vendor’s inventory refreshes. Go back and buy new shards. This is one of the few ways to stockpile enough shards to unlock every aberrant form without relying on random drops. The vendor also sells health upgrades (always next to the truck) and reset items. Make a habit of checking every vendor every cycle. It takes 30 seconds and pays off massively.

8. Use Fire Against Mold — and Get the Fire Ability Before You Need It

The mold enemies that appear in the park zone and elsewhere are immune to most damage types. Fire damage melts them. The fire ability (either Inferno or Ignite) comes from defeating the Deserter resonant boss in the Central zone’s factory. That boss is accessible early, around power level 3-4. Most beginners avoid it because they think they need to level up first. Wrong. The Deserter is designed to be your second or third boss. Go kill it early. The fire ability makes the park zone and its boss (the Collective) dramatically easier. Without it, you’ll spend five minutes chipping away at mold enemies with blunt damage. With it, they die in seconds.

One more thing that separates a good run from a frustrating one: learn to love the dodge attack as a mobility tool, not just damage. The dodge attack — pressing attack immediately after dodging — lunges you forward and covers ground. Use it to close distance on ranged enemies or to reposition behind an enemy for backstab bonus damage (50% more from the Skilled Backstab talent). It’s not just for evasion; it’s for aggressive repositioning. Beginners dodge backward. Experienced players dodge through the enemy and attack from behind.

Control Resonant’s combat clicks when you stop reacting and start chaining. The game rewards aggression, but informed aggression. These eight tips give you the foundation to play forward instead of backward.

Control Resonant throws you into a melee system that punishes hesitation.
