What you don’t know is how many you’re walking past. Control Resonant hides over 20 permanent health and power upgrades across Manhattan, and the majority of players will miss at least a third of them on a first playthrough. The reason? The game never points you back to the areas that matter, and the order you kill Resonants directly determines how easy those areas are to clear. To find all Health and Power Upgrades in Control Resonant, focus on three categories: vendor proximity crates, hidden storefront basements, and FBC testing facilities. Each zone has at least one of each, totaling over 20 permanent stat boosts. Do not defeat a Resonant boss until you have cleared those areas, or the enemies will level up and make collection harder.

Why Location Order Matters – The Resonant Cycle Trap

Every time you kill a Resonant boss, every zone’s enemies respawn and gain a level. New enemy types appear. World feats reset at a higher difficulty. That means a crate you could have grabbed at level 3 now sits behind level 7 enemies with armor and shield mixes. The obvious solution: collect every upgrade you can before your second Resonant kill.

The trap is that several upgrades require traversal abilities you don’t have at the start. You cannot reach the West Incursion Zone’s power upgrade without Gravity Shift, nor the Evacuation Zone’s without Reach. So you must do those two dimensional faults first. Once you have both, the entire map opens. Do not kill a Resonant until you have both traversal abilities and have swept every zone for its vendor crate, storefront basement, and testing facility. That sequence alone prevents the zonal difficulty spike from turning a two-hour upgrade run into a four-hour slog.

Vendor Crates: The Free Health Upgrade Every Zone Has

An ice cream truck vendor sits in each of the seven zones. Right next to every truck is a small crate holding one health upgrade point. Three of these permanently increase your health bar by one segment.

The trick is finding the truck. Vendors do not appear on your map until you are within about 30 meters. Listen for the telltale ice cream chime – it sounds deliberately eerie, like a music box wound too tight. Follow it, and you’ll spot the truck. The crate is always within two steps of the driver’s side door.

Central: behind the watchtower, near the basketball court.

Downtown: alley next to the auction house.

West Incursion Zone: ground level of the parking garage where you get Gravity Shift.

Evacuation Zone: near the Railyard Street Station entrance.

Park: inside the park’s eastern gate, beside a bench.

Underpass: on a raised platform near the fast travel door.

Oldest House interior: no vendor here – treat Central as your seventh zone.

Do not spend source at these vendors until you have picked up the crate. The crate is free and always present, regardless of zone level.

The Six Secret Storefront Basements

Six storefronts across Manhattan hide a puzzle basement. Completing each rewards a health upgrade. The buildings are unmarked on the map. You have to walk in.

The puzzles vary but share one pattern: there is always a note in the room explaining the solution. Read it. The note is never more than ten feet from the interactive objects.

The Diner (Central, southeast of Oldest House): Turn on the appliances in order from smallest to largest – coffee machine, toaster, microwave, oven. The back wall opens.

The Laundromat (Downtown, west of auction house): The note says “spin cycle.” Activate the three washing machines from shortest cycle to longest.

The Art Gallery (West Incursion Zone, second floor of a building with broken windows): Arrange the three paintings by the dates on their frames, oldest to newest.

The Convenience Store (Evacuation Zone, next to the subway entrance): The note mentions “price tags.” Arrange the items on the shelves from cheapest to most expensive.

The Florist (Park, northern edge): Water the three plants in order of the number on their pots. The numbers are written on the pots themselves.

The Pizza Place (Underpass, near the large underground tunnel): The note says “delivery order.” Stack the boxes by the time stamps on the receipts, earliest to latest.

Each basement contains a single health upgrade point. That is six more health segments you can grab before you fight a single world boss. The puzzle solutions do not carry over between zones, so treat each as its own logic test.

FBC Testing Facilities: Power Upgrades from the Unsupervised Science Quest

Testing facilities are marked on your map with a terminal icon after you calibrate the radar for that zone. Each contains a series of combat challenges and ends with a reward room holding one power upgrade point. Three power upgrades increase your max power (mana) by one segment, allowing more frequent ability use.

The map icon is often misleading. The actual entrance to a testing facility can be several blocks away from the marker, usually through a subway grate, a sewer hatch, or a destroyed building floor. Look for FBC warning tape or a small console on the street level. Interact with it to lower an elevator or open a hatch.

Inside, expect a mix of Hiss and Mold enemies. The mold variants are weak to fire, so bring the Inferno or Ignite ability if you have them. The final room always has the power upgrade on a pedestal. Collect it, then fast travel out.

There are seven testing facilities, one per zone. That is seven power upgrades. Combined with the vendor health crates and storefront basements, that is 21 upgrades from these three categories alone – enough to nearly double your starting health and power bars.

The Prologue Boss Arena (Return Visit)

This one is the easiest to miss. After the opening credits roll, you wake up in the Oldest House and re-enter Manhattan. The game never tells you to go back to where you fought the Artist, the first Resonant in the prologue. That arena still contains a power upgrade point on the ground near the center of the boss room. Also in that same area are lore documents about Patterning and a secondary passage with a small resource crate.

To get there: from the Central zone, head northwest until you hit the sealed subway tunnel that you emerged from during the prologue. The entrance is now open. Walk through the short corridor, and you are in the boss arena. The power upgrade glows faintly on the floor. Grab it and leave. The enemies do not respawn here, so you can come back at any level.

Rooftops and Construction Sites

A few upgrades are not tied to any quest chain or vendor. They sit on rooftops, behind breakable walls, or on ledges that require precise platforming.

Construction site (southeast of Oldest House, Central): Jump to the elevated platforms on the left of the building, then climb to the roof of the adjacent building. Enter the construction site through a hole in the wall. The power upgrade is inside a metal chest.

Parking garage roof (West Incursion Zone, same garage as Gravity Shift vault): On the top level, northeast corner, there is a health upgrade point on a concrete barrier.

Underpass junction (Underpass zone, near the large circular room): A health upgrade sits on a lone pipe that you have to vault across. Missable because the pipe looks like scenery.

These three are extras beyond the 21-category count. With them, you have a total of 25 permanent upgrades – a substantial boost that lets you focus on building damage and talents instead of scrambling for more HP.

Practical Route Order

To minimize backtracking and enemy level problems, follow this sequence:

Complete the prologue and automatic traversal tutorial.

Unlock Gravity Shift (West Incursion Zone vault) and Reach (Evacuation Zone vault). Do not kill any Resonants yet.

Sweep Central, Downtown, West Incursion, and Evacuation zones: vendor crate, storefront basement, testing facility, rooftop extras.

Kill the first Resonant (any zone you have cleared). This triggers the first cycle.

Sweep Park, Underpass, and remaining zones before killing the second Resonant.

Return to the prologue boss arena for the power upgrade.

By the time you kill the second Resonant, you will have all 25 upgrades. The world level will be higher, but your raw stats will absorb the difficulty jump.

Final Tip: Use Zone Info to Track Progress

Open your map, zoom out, and select each zone. The zone info screen shows how many of that zone’s activities you have completed. It does not directly list upgrades, but large resource crates appear on the map once you reach a certain zone level. Those large crates are often near vendors and storefronts. Use them as navigation markers. If a crate icon appears where you haven’t explored, go there – you will almost certainly find a puzzle entrance or a vendor you missed.

Control Resonant rewards thoroughness, but only if you know what you are looking for.
