Try This DirectX Fix First" data-iacss-internal="1">Control Resonant isn’t in the damage section of the talent tree. It’s hiding in the falter nodes and the dodge-related passives. That sounds backward. But chasing raw damage numbers first actually slows your kill speed. The real damage multiplier comes from something the game never frames as damage: the dominance state.

Unlock an execution on any enemy — even a grunt — and your primary and combo finisher attacks double for eight seconds. Secondary attacks jump by 50%. Kill during that window and enemies drop bonus health. The talent tree can stretch that window to 15 seconds and add more effects. That’s not a damage boost. That’s a damage revolution. Every node that shortens the time to your first execution, or extends the dominance window, gives you more effective DPS than any “+10% damage” ever could.

What You Actually Want to Spend Your Talent Points On

You get one talent point per zone level. There are seven zones, each leveling up to 15. That’s 105 points total. You won’t fill the entire tree. Spend them where they compound.

Dominance (cost: 1 point, available immediately). This is the non-negotiable first pick. Without it, no execution, no damage doubling. It unlocks the ability to perform an execution when an enemy’s falter meter is full.

Heightened State → Restorative Dodge → Extended Retaliation (7 points total). Perfect dodges are your second most reliable damage trigger. Heightened State is the gatekeeper. It costs 3 points. Restorative Dodge gives a small health recovery on perfect dodge. Extended Retaliation extends the counterattack window and boosts its damage. Combined with Sanctioned Retaliation (1 point) — which recovers 50% more power after a retaliation — you can chain abilities without ever running dry.

Rush (4 points down the mobility line). Movement speed might not look like damage. But staying in melee range, closing distance after a knockback, and repositioning to hit exposed backs all reduce the time you aren’t attacking. Three seconds of extra sprint is worth more than three seconds of 5% extra damage.

Sustained Assault (1 point). Successive melee hits on the same enemy have a chance to drop health elements. This lets you face-tank smaller hits instead of backing off. Backing off resets your combo. Your combo is how you build falter. This node keeps you in the fight.

Skilled Backstab (1 point, left side). Attacking an enemy from behind increases melee damage and falter buildup by 50%. That half. Combine with the strike primary form’s speed and you can hit the execution threshold on any non-boss enemy in one combo.

Resilient Dylan (1 point, right side). Takes 25% less damage while dominance is active. It removes the pressure to disengage during your biggest damage window.

Dominance Duration Increase (1 point, near the bottom of the execution tree). Extends dominance from 8 to 15 seconds. That effectively doubles the uptime of your most powerful buff.

Why the Standard Advice Gets It Wrong

Most build guides tell you to pick talents that boost raw attack numbers. They’re not wrong — those talents do increase your damage. But they increase it additively. The dominance buff applies multiplicatively. A 100% primary damage buff from dominance combined with a 50% backstab bonus from Skilled Backstab gives you 200% effective damage when both are active. No single +damage node comes close.

The real bottleneck in Control Resonant is how fast you fill the falter bar, not how hard each hit lands. Every point that accelerates falter buildup — backstab, dodge attack upgrades, combo finisher falter bonuses — gets you to the execution faster. That execution starts the damage loop.

How to Test This Without Wasting Resources

The gap’s “Exchange Recents” function is probably the single most useful feature the game never explains. After you spend a living shard to unlock a new weapon form or combo finisher, you can swap it out for another one for free — as long as you stay in the gap. This lets you test every combination in the arena before committing. Walk through the gap’s exit and the choice locks.

Use this to find which weapon builds falter fastest for your playstyle. The strike’s rapid hits combined with the crush hammer’s heavy falter damage are a baseline that works for most players. But if you prefer the glaive’s reach, the same talent priorities apply.

One Detail That Changes the Whole Strategy

The mold enemies in the park and later zones have a quirk: fire damage bypasses their defenses, but blunt damage is ineffective. The factory resident drops either ignite or inferno — pick ignite. It imbues all your attacks with fire while active, turning your falter-focused build into a mold melter without swapping any talents.

Most players ignore ignite because it drains power over time. But with Sanctioned Retaliation and a high-combo-rate weapon like strike, you regain power faster than ignite drains it. You can sustain fire for an entire fight. That lets the same falter loop work against every enemy type in the game.

The single most damaging thing you can do in Control Resonant isn’t in the damage section of the talent tree.
