That sounds backwards for a game where you spend most of your time swinging a weapon, but it’s true. Your primary light attacks—strike, glaive, cleave—all deal raw damage, and they are deliberately weak. The game wants you to treat them as setup tools, not finishers.

The real damage comes from three specialized types: blunt, sharp, and fire. Each one exists to break a specific defense or exploit a specific weakness. And each one feeds directly into the dominance loop—the eight-second damage boost that doubles your primary damage and adds 50% to your secondary. Understand these four damage types, and you stop fighting the game’s systems. You start using them.

Blunt Damage – The Armor Shredder

Blunt is the only type that reliably strips armor. Enemies with a white military-vest icon under their health bar are wearing armor, and raw attacks tickle them. Blunt comes from two places:

Crush (hammer) – your secondary form, slow but devastating. A charged hammer swing does massive blunt damage and heavy falter (the yellow stagger bar).

Concussive Beatdown and Uppercut Surge – two of the six combo finishers. Both deal blunt damage as the final hit of your light attack chain.

A fully upgraded Uppercut Surge not only applies the lifted status (launching enemies airborne) but also restores power—the resource for combat abilities. This is the fastest way to trigger dominance: lift a grunt with the finisher, then execute them while airborne. That eight-second damage window makes your blunt attacks hit even harder against the next armored heavy.

Counterintuitive detail: Blunt is not effective against mold enemies once their armor is gone. If you keep hammering a mold enemy after breaking its armor, you’re wasting damage. Switch to fire immediately.

Sharp Damage – The Shield Breaker

Sharp damage bypasses shields. Enemies with a white overlay on their health bar are shielded, and raw attacks again do next to nothing. Sharp comes from:

Drill (secondary form) – a sustained attack that can be held to grind through shields. Its third hit does especially high sharp damage and applies weakened, increasing all further damage the target takes.

Split Pivot and Split Orbit – the two sharp-damage combo finishers. Split Pivot fires a spinning blade forward; Split Orbit creates a ring around Dylan. Both apply weakened and burning with later upgrades.

The drill-secondary plus split-pivot combo is the most efficient way to break a shielded enemy. Land a full light attack chain into the finisher, then hold the drill button. The weakened status makes the drill’s sharp damage compound. You’ll chew through shield bars in two seconds.

Practical tip: If you’re using strike (fast daggers) as your primary, pair it with drill for your secondary. Strike’s speed builds the combo quickly, and the drill handles anything with a shield. You cover raw, sharp, and (with the right finisher) blunt in one loadout.

Fire Damage – The Mold Melter

Fire is the only elemental damage type, and it exists for one reason: mold enemies. Mold has a greenish tint and spawns poisonous clouds. Fire damage, specifically the burning status, deals double damage to them. Fire comes from:

Ignite combat ability – imbues all your attacks (primary, secondary, and combat abilities) with fire. Drains power per second; excellent for crowd clearing.

Inferno combat ability – a punch attack that builds burn quickly. Costs less power per use but doesn’t spread to your whole kit.

Fire also interacts with the infected status (from mold-based combat abilities like spore burst or growth). If you apply both burn and infected to the same enemy, they explode for massive area damage. This is the most powerful status synergy in the game, and it works even on non-mold enemies.

Crucial early-game move: The Factory Resonant (Central zone) drops the fire ability. Make this your first resonant kill. Without fire, mold enemies in the park and underpass are bullet sponges. With it, they pop like balloons.

Raw Damage – The Setup Tool

Raw damage is what your primary weapon does. It is not meant to kill. It is meant to:

Build your combo chain to reach the combo finisher.

Fill the falter (stagger) meter.

Restore power from specific talents.

Your primary’s attack speed matters more than its raw damage number. Strike has the fastest combo to finisher—about one second faster than glaive. That speed translates to more finishers per fight, which means more blunt, sharp, or fire damage depending on your finisher choice.

The one exception: Cleave (longsword) has a dodge attack that lifts enemies. This effectively lets you skip the combo chain and go straight to an aerial execution. If you’re running a falter-focused build, cleave’s dodge attack is the fastest way to trigger dominance.

Putting It All Together: The Damage Loop

The optimal combat flow looks like this:

Open with raw attacks on a grunt to build your combo.

Hit your combo finisher (blunt, sharp, or raw depending on what you need).

Switch to secondary – hammer for armored, drill for shielded, or whip for crowd control.

Execute the faltered enemy – this gives you dominance.

During dominance, use your combat abilities (fire, summons, or shield) to wipe out leftover heavies.

The damage type you choose for your combo finisher determines which enemy types you handle best. If you’re entering a zone with many armored foes, equip concussive beatdown. For shields, split pivot. For mixed groups, uppercut surge (blunt + lifted) is the safest choice because it buys you time.

The hidden stat: Each weapon upgrade you unlock (even for weapons you don’t use) increases your aberrant strength by 1% per point. That multiplier affects all damage types. By midgame, you should have every primary, secondary, and combo finisher unlocked just for the passive boost.

Raw damage is the worst way to kill enemies in Control Resonant.
