The game’s assist mode sliders exist, but most players want a fair fight, not an invincibility toggle. The real solution lives in the talent tree. These five talents shift combat from surviving by luck to surviving by design. You will still get hit. You will just be able to take it, recover, and push back.

The talent tree is accessed in the Gap by holding down on the D-pad. Talent points come from leveling up zones—not from killing enemies or completing main quests. Each zone level grants one point, and you get them by completing world feats, opening crates, and defeating tougher enemies. These five talents are the ones worth spending those limited points on first.

Restorative Dodge

Perfect Dodge itself is essential—it slows time and lets you counterattack. But Restorative Dodge is what keeps you upright. When you nail a perfect dodge, you recover a small amount of health. It’s not a full heal, but in a fight where every hit shaves off a chunk, those small returns stack.

You can test this in the West Incursion Zone. During the parking garage fight for the Shift ability, you’ll face a group of level 3 Hiss. One Guard will wind up a charge. Perfect dodge that charge, and you get health back while the world slows. Use the retaliation to knock him into a wall. The health recovery means you don’t have to retreat and wait for elements to drop. You heal while staying offensive.

Sustained Assault

This talent gives your successive melee hits a chance to drop health elements. “Successive” means hitting the same enemy repeatedly without a long pause. The strike primary form works perfectly here—its fast attacks rack up hits quickly, triggering the health drop chance.

In the Evacuation Zone, you will encounter shielded Hiss Elevated enemies. They hover out of range of most melee attacks unless you use the reach ability. But if you use the drill secondary form, its held attack counts multiple hits rapidly. You will see health elements pop out mid-drill. Pick them up without breaking your combo. This talent turns a sustained assault into a self-replenishing resource.

Restorative Dominance

Dominance is the buff you get after executing an enemy whose fault meter is full. It doubles your primary and combo finisher damage for 8 seconds and boosts secondary damage by 50%. Restorative Dominance adds a crucial effect: killing enemies while Dominance is active guarantees more health element drops.

This combos directly with the previous two talents. Build fault with Sustained Assault, execute a grunt to trigger Dominance, then heal from both the execution kill and the extra health drops. The Central zone’s factory resident fight—the one that unlocks the fire ability—is where this shines. The Deserter boss spawns mold grunts. Execute one to start Dominance, then switch to an AoE combo finisher like Wide Edge to hit the boss and the remaining grunts. Every kill inside that window drops health. You will outlast the boss.

Resilient Dylan

Once you have Dominance active, this talent cuts incoming damage by 25%. It is a flat reduction that applies to all sources: melee, projectiles, area effects, even the infected buildup from mold enemies.

Consider the Park resident boss fight. The boss’s attacks apply infected status, which drains your health over time. If you are not running the Molding Bar artifact (which trades 50% health for immunity), the status effect alone can kill you. But with Resilient Dylan active after an execution, every tick of infected does 25% less damage. Combined with the health elements from Restorative Dominance, you can survive the full duration of the status and cleanse it by sprinting (use the “Running Cleanses Status” talent as well, but that is separate). Resilient Dylan does not require a specific playstyle—it works for every build that uses executions, which should be every build.

Sanctioned Retaliation

This is the talent most players overlook. After a perfect dodge, your next attack is a retaliation. Sanctioned Retaliation makes that retaliation restore 50% more power. Power is the resource for combat abilities like Ignite, Shield, and Growth. More power means more abilities. More abilities means more crowd control, more healing from summons, more fire damage on mold.

The practical payoff appears in longer fights like the Underpass resident. That boss forces you to stay in a moving spotlight or take heavy damage. If you have the Shield ability unlocked from the first resonant, you can use Sanctioned Retaliation to recover power faster, then raise the shield repeatedly without waiting. The shield blocks damage while you reposition. The power recovery loop keeps the shield available. You essentially turn the boss’s mechanic against itself by using its own pressure to fuel your defense.

The talent does more than feed the shield. With Ignite active, every melee attack burns enemies. More power from Sanctioned Retaliation means you can keep Ignite on longer without running dry. The fire damage then builds fault faster, leading to more executions, more Dominance, and more survivability. It is a feedback loop that rewards aggressive defense.

Putting the Five Together

These five talents form a survival cycle. You dodge perfectly → Restorative Dodge heals you → Sanctioned Retaliation recovers power → you execute an enemy → Restorative Dominance drops health elements → Resilient Dylan reduces damage during Dominance → Sustained Assault keeps health elements coming while you attack. The loop does not require a specific weapon or ability. It works with strike, glaive, cleave, crush, drill, extend—any combination. The only prerequisite is learning to time your dodges and use executions instead of just killing enemies outright.

Zone leveling to get talent points happens naturally as you complete world feats. The first three zones—Central, West Incursion, and Evacuation—each start at level 1 and cap at 15. You need nine talent points for the first three talents on this list (Perfect Dodge, Restorative Dodge, and Extended Retaliation are on that path). Getting three zones to level 3 gives you exactly nine points. Prioritize those zones before you face your second resonant boss, and you will enter the midgame with a survivability framework that keeps you alive through the later cycles.

One edge case: if you are running a summon-heavy build with Growth and Volatile Anomaly, you might swap Sustained Assault for Team Morale (5% less damage per summon on the field). That is a situational trade. For a general survivability build that works in any encounter and with any weapon, these five talents are the ones worth your first talent points.

That moment when a Hiss Heavy’s swing connects and half your health bar vanishes.
