Enemies drop it. Chests spill it. Vending machines cough up 1,000+ per kill. But spend carelessly and you’ll hit a brick wall when you need 4,000 Source for a single Living Shard — and the vendor is right there, mocking you.

The currency system is straightforward: Source buys materials, Living Shards unlock new weapon forms, and reset items let you re-spec. The mistake most players make is treating Source like pocket change. It’s not. Every purchase should increase your Aberrant Strength or unlock a critical upgrade. Here’s exactly where your Source belongs — and where it doesn’t.

Where should you spend your Source first in Control Resonant? Prioritize buying Living Shards from zone vendors. Each Living Shard costs 4,000 Source and unlocks a new primary weapon, secondary weapon, or combo finisher. That single purchase adds +5 to your Aberrant Strength — the multiplier that scales all damage. Skip the cheap upgrade materials. Save for shards.

Living Shards Are the Only Vendor Purchase That Matters Early

Vendors appear as ice cream trucks in every zone. They sell a rotating stock of upgrade materials: Aberrant Splinters for 150 Source, Corrupted Elements for 200, Edible Globs for 250. These are traps. You’ll collect those materials naturally by killing Hiss heavies and opening crates. Spending Source on them means you’ll have less when a Living Shard appears in the same vendor’s inventory.

Living Shards are finite. You earn a few from main story missions and from defeating Resonant bosses. That’s not enough to unlock all weapon forms and combo finishers. Each additional shard costs 4,000 Source at the vendor. That’s the same as killing four hidden vending machines — or clearing a zone’s world feats for an hour.

The return is immediate. Unlocking a new primary form (Strike, Glaive, or Cleave) costs one Living Shard and boosts your Aberrant Strength by +5. Unlocking a secondary form (Crush, Drill, Extend) does the same. Combo finishers also cost one shard each and give +5 per unlock. Stack six combo finishers for +30 Aberrant Strength from a single skill category.

Test Before You Commit – The Gap Trick

After spending a Living Shard to unlock a new weapon form, do not leave the Gap immediately. The Gap has an “Exchange Recent” function that lets you refund the shard for free while you’re still inside. Use this to test every form in the training arena before locking your choice.

Here’s the sequence: spend one Living Shard to unlock Strike. Walk to the training dummy. Try the light attack speed, the dodge attack, the combo finisher timing. If it doesn’t click, go back to the weapon stone and select Exchange Recent. The shard returns. You can test all three primary forms, all three secondaries, and all six combo finishers this way without spending a single Source beyond the initial purchase.

Once you leave the Gap, the choice is permanent. That’s when you commit. The Exchange Recent does not work after you exit.

Weapon Upgrades: Invest in Unlocks, Then Fill In

The Aberrant Strength system rewards breadth more than depth. Every node in the weapon tree adds to your multiplier — even nodes on forms you never equip. A +1 node from a secondary weapon you never use still boosts your overall damage.

The most efficient path: spend Living Shards to unlock every form’s first node. That’s three primary forms, three secondary forms, and six combo finishers. Each first node costs one Living Shard and grants +5 Aberrant Strength. That’s +60 total from twelve unlocks — no material costs, just twelve shards.

After that, fill in the +2 and +3 nodes on the forms you actually use. Those cost materials (Aberrant Fragments, Edible Globs, etc.) and Source. The Source cost per node ranges from 200 to 800 depending on the tier. That’s reasonable if you’ve already secured your Living Shard supply.

Do Not Buy Reset Items from Vendors

Reset items cost 1,500 Source at low-level vendors and more at high-level ones. They let you re-spec your combat abilities, talents, and weapon upgrades. You will need them — but you should not pay for them.

Hidden vending machines with red lights drop reset items when you destroy them. One machine in the Central zone, directly southeast of the Oldest House entrance, spawns every time the zone resets after a Resonant cycle. It drops a reset item every time. You’ll also earn reset items from defeating Resonant bosses and from some side quests.

In a full playthrough, you can collect 14–20 reset items without buying a single one. Save your Source.

Health and Power Upgrades Are Free Near Vendors

Every ice cream truck vendor has a glowing crate next to it. That crate contains one health upgrade point. Three points increase your max health by one segment. The crate is always free — no Source required.

Same deal with power upgrade points. They appear in testing facilities (FBC terminals on the map) and as rewards from arcade machine high scores. The arcade machines in each zone give a power upgrade point if you score second place or higher. First place also gives a reset item.

Do not spend Source on health or power. The upgrades are abundant through exploration. Use your currency only on what you cannot farm: Living Shards.

Artifact Crafting: Spend Source Only When You Have a Surplus

Artifacts provide passive bonuses like +30% health-on-perfect-dodge or resistance to mold damage. Each artifact costs crafting materials plus 500–1,000 Source to create. The materials come from side quests and enemy drops.

Early game: skip artifact crafting entirely. Your Source goes to Living Shards. Mid game: craft one or two that match your build. The “Lost Prescription” artifact, sold by the Downtown vendor for 1,000 Source, adds 30% chance to restore health after a perfect dodge. That’s worth the price if you use dodge-heavy playstyles.

Late game: recycle unused artifacts for Quiet Echoes only if you urgently need material for a different craft. Otherwise, keep everything. The Source return from recycling is tiny – 250 per item – and not worth losing a tool you might need for a specific boss.

The One Exception: Buy Zone-Specific Materials for a Single Upgrade

Sometimes you’re one Aberrant Fragment short of a major node. That node grants +2 or +3 Aberrant Strength. The vendor’s Fragments cost 150 each. Buying one or two to finish that upgrade is fine. Buying ten to brute-force your way down the tree is not.

The rule: if you need more than three items from a vendor to complete a single node, wait. Go kill heavies in their corresponding zone. Mold enemies drop Edible Globs. Hiss heavies drop Aberrant Splinters. The drops are consistent – you will get what you need within 10–15 minutes of focused farming.

When the Endgame Flips the Priority

Once you’ve unlocked all weapon forms and combo finishers, your Aberrant Strength can still increase through the final nodes of each tree. Those nodes cost Living Shards and rare materials. You may also want to buy multiple copies of the same Living Shard from different vendors — each vendor keeps a separate inventory.

At this stage, Source becomes a tool for convenience, not necessity. Spend it on anything you want: cosmetic rewards, extra source from vending machines, or vendor materials to finish a build. But never forget that each 4,000 Source you save is one more Living Shard that could unlock a +5 strength boost. That ratio never changes.

Your Source balance in Control Resonant looks generous early on. Enemies drop it. Chests spill it.
