Upgrade everything you can, spend those living shards, unlock new forms. It sounds obvious. More power, easier fights. But that advice skips the nuance. The Gap is a trap if you use it without understanding how it actually works. Here are seven things the game leaves out — and why rushing into the Gap can cost you more than it saves.

1. Testing Is Free Until You Walk Out

Most guides tell you to pick an ability or weapon form and commit. Wrong. The Gap has a testing arena, and you can use the “exchange recent” function to refund upgrades instantly — as long as you stay inside the Gap. Walk out and your choices lock. Permanently.

So don’t pick your first combat ability from the boss reward screen. Go to the Gap, try all three options on the dummy, swap freely, then leave when you’re sure. That free trial period is one of the most forgiving systems in the game, and almost nobody uses it.

2. Leaving the Gap Resets Your “Exchange Recent” Counter

Here’s the catch: every time you enter the Gap, you get one free redo on your latest purchase. But if you leave and come back, that window closes. You don’t get a second chance.

This matters most for artifact crafting. You might craft an artifact, realize it’s not what you wanted, and think you can refund it. Nope. Once you craft it, it’s yours. Only the “exchange recent” on weapon/ability purchases works, and only until you exit. Artifacts are final. Check your materials carefully before pressing craft.

3. The Artifact Station Eats Your Resources If You’re Not Careful

Common advice: “Craft artifacts as soon as you unlock them.” That’s dangerous. Artifacts require rare materials like aberrant remnants and echoes. And the crafting station gives you no preview of what the artifact does until after you’ve spent the resources.

The game doesn’t tell you that you can examine uncrafted artifacts in the gap menu before committing. Open the artifact tab, select an item, and read its effect. If you don’t see an effect that fits your current build, skip it. Save those materials for upgrades you’ll actually use.

4. The Talents Tree Is a Zone-Level Tax, Not a Priority

People assume you need to fill the talent tree as fast as possible. The reality: talent points come from zone levels, and you only get one per zone level. That means spending a point on a mediocre talent locks you out of a better one later if you’ve already depleted that zone’s xp.

The game never explains that zone levels cap. You can’t grind infinite talent points. So choose the talents that directly support your playstyle — perfect dodge, sustained assault, restorative dodge are universally strong. Don’t waste points on “increased falter from kick attacks” if you never kick.

5. The Gap’s Shop Is a Material Pit

The ice cream truck vendors are separate from the Gap, but the Gap itself has no shop. However, many players think the Gap is where you use materials you bought at vendors. That part is fine. The mistake is buying materials at vendors first, then going to the Gap and realizing you’re short on source to actually use them.

Better approach: Go to the Gap, check what you need for your next upgrade, then note the exact materials. Return to the vendor, buy only what you need, then go back to the Gap and upgrade. This saves source and prevents buying random items you won’t use. The game never hints at this shopping-list workflow.

6. You Can Respec Abilities, But Not Weapons — Plan Ahead

The game sells reset items (for 1,500 source from vendors, or dropped by vending machines). These let you redistribute combat ability points and talent points. But weapon upgrades — the actual weapon forms and their skill trees — cannot be respec’d. Once you spend a node, it’s locked.

That means if you invest heavily in a weapon form you later hate, you can’t get those materials back. The only “refund” is the +5 aberrant strength boost from unlocking a new form; the internal upgrade nodes are gone forever. So test weapons in the arena before committing. If you don’t like the feel of a form after 10 minutes, respect and pick a different secondary form early. You have limited shards.

7. The Arena Dummy Doesn’t Prepare You for Real Fights

The test arena spawns a single, stationary enemy with no modifiers. It’s great for seeing animations and numbers. But it won’t teach you how a build handles crowd control, airborne enemies, or shield/armor combos.

Experienced players know: you need to take your new loadout into an actual zone encounter before deciding it’s good. The arena can mislead you into thinking a slow heavy-hitter is viable, then you get swarmed by three hiss and fold. Use the arena for initial feel, then go clear a world feat to stress-test. The game doesn’t warn you that the dummy is a beginner’s tool, not a final judge.

The Gap is powerful, but it rewards patience, not haste. Test before you commit, check material costs before you buy, and don’t trust the dummy. These seven oversights separate smooth progression from wasted resources. And if you’re planning a new run, remember: the Gap’s “exchange recent” feature is a gift — use it before you leave.

Everyone says the same thing: head to the Gap as soon as you have materials.
