When you open the map in Control Resonant and see a terminal icon marking an FBC testing site, your instinct will be to head straight there. That instinct will waste your time. The map marker shows the destination, not the entrance. The entrance is often blocks away, tucked inside a subway tunnel, a garage ramp, or behind a destructible wall. The Unsupervised Science side quest is the most rewarding repeatable activity in the game — if you know how to find the actual door.

What Is the Unsupervised Science Quest?

This side quest sends you to FBC testing facilities scattered across Manhattan. Each zone has one. Inside, you must activate three computer terminals to unlock the reward room. Completing a facility gives you one power upgrade point — a resource that permanently increases Dylan’s power gauge (his mana for combat abilities). Collect three of these, and your power bar expands by one segment. The quest has no formal journal entry; it tracks automatically as you complete each terminal.

The catch: the map icon is not a pin on a door. It marks the facility’s approximate location, often deep underground or inside a building you cannot enter from the street level. The actual entrance can be a five-minute detour away, through tunnels you would never explore otherwise.

Step 1: Stop Following the Map Marker Blindly

Treat the terminal icon as a zone indicator, not a navigation point. When you select it on the map, look at the broader area: which district, which block. Then scan for anything that looks like a service entrance, a maintenance hatch, or a collapsed tunnel. The entrances are almost always at a lower elevation than the marker. Check the edges of the map zone for stairwells that lead down, or for cracked walls you can break with the Crush hammer.

The game will not highlight the entrance. You must recognize the signs: a chain-link gate slightly ajar, a ventilation grate with a gap, a concrete bunker half-sunken into the ground. Once you have cleared a few, you will start spotting them on instinct.

Step 2: Know Each Zone’s Entrance Type

Not every entrance looks the same. But they follow patterns. Here is what to expect in each zone, based on the most common hidden access points:

Zone

Typical Entrance Location

Approximate Distance from Map Marker

Enemy Level (Early Cycle)

Central

Subway station stairwell near the basketball court

150 meters southeast

3–4

Downtown

Garage ramp behind the auction house

200 meters west

4–5

West Incursion

Underground parking lot under a collapsed overpass

250 meters north

5–6

Evacuation Zone

Manhole cover near the railyard tracks

100 meters east

3

Park

Cave entrance hidden by mold growth (use fire to clear)

300 meters southwest

6–7

Underpass

Drainage tunnel beside the highway pillars

400 meters northwest

7–8

The distance is not wasted space. The tunnels often contain loot crates, enemy patrols, and occasionally a second terminal that counts toward the same facility. So the long walk is not a punishment — it is a bonus route with extra resources.

Step 3: Clear the Testing Facility

Once you find the entrance, the facility itself is a self-contained arena. Expect a mix of Hiss enemies appropriate to the zone’s current level. Bring a secondary weapon that counters the most common enemy type in that zone: in the Park, bring fire (Ignite or Inferno) for the mold; in Downtown, bring a hammer for armored Hiss heavies.

The facilities are small — three to five rooms connected by corridors. Do not rush. Some rooms have pressure plates that spawn additional waves. Clear one room fully before advancing. The objective is to reach and activate three terminals. They are usually arranged in a loose loop: one at the start, one midway, and one in the final room before the reward chamber.

Step 4: Activate the Terminals in the Correct Order

The terminals require a simple interaction — no puzzle, no code. Walk up and press the interact button. The facility’s security system will acknowledge the activation. If you miss one, the reward room stays locked. The game does not give a hard countdown, but each terminal you activate reduces the ambient red glow in the facility. When all three are active, the final door opens, revealing a single large crate with the power upgrade point.

A few facilities have a terminal that is slightly hidden. Look behind pipes or on raised platforms. Use your Reach ability to grapple to elevated ledges — that is often where the third terminal sits.

Step 5: Collect Your Reward — And Do Not Skip This

The power upgrade point is not optional if you want to survive later cycles. Three points equal one power bar segment. With a full six segments (18 points), you can chain several combat abilities without waiting for the bar to refill. The Unsupervised Science quest gives you exactly one point per zone, and there are seven zones — that is seven guaranteed power segments over the course of the game. If you complete all of them, you will have more than enough power to sustain prolonged boss fights without running dry.

The quest is also replayable after resonant cycles. After you defeat a resonant boss and the world resets, the terminals reactivate. You can run the facilities again for additional power upgrade points. The second completion gives a different reward — usually source or rare materials — but the first clear per zone per cycle always gives that critical power upgrade.

The misleading map markers are not a bug. They are deliberate design, forcing you to explore tunnels and discover the layered geometry of Manhattan. Once you accept that the icon is only a hint, the quest becomes one of the most efficient ways to power up. The entrance is closer than you think — just not where the map says it is.

The game lies to you.
