In its final phase, a moving spotlight becomes your only safe zone. Miss it and you take rapid damage. Stay inside and the boss closes in. Most guides suggest ranged builds or defensive options. They are wrong. The most reliable way to beat this boss is to equip the Crush secondary weapon and the Volatile Anomaly combat ability. Here is why, and exactly how to execute it.

The Spotlight Phase Changes Everything

Before the last third of its health, the Resonant behaves like a standard boss. It teleports, throws debris, and spawns Hiss adds. You can handle that with any decent build. The problem starts when the room darkens and a single circle of light appears. You must remain inside that circle or take heavy tick damage. The circle moves slowly but unpredictably. Staying inside means fighting at very close range. This is the moment when most players die because they panic and try to create distance.

Why Crush Wins Here

Crush (the hammer form) is your secondary weapon. Its charged attacks build falter faster than any other secondary form. The source material confirms that Crush “stun locks a lot of enemies so effectively that they simply can’t escape.” Against this Resonant, that effect is vital. Each charged hammer strike fills about a third of the boss’s falter gauge. Land three charged hits and you trigger an execution. The execution animation gives you invincibility frames, which lets you ignore the spotlight damage for the duration. More importantly, faltering the boss stops its attacks. It cannot throw projectiles while staggered. You control the pace.

Switch to Crush at the start of the boss fight. Do not treat it as a backup. Your primary weapon (preferably Strike for its critical hit chance) will build power for your combat abilities. Use the primary to chip damage during Phase 1. Once the spotlight appears, rely almost entirely on Crush. Wait for the boss to land after a teleport, charge the hammer, release as it gets close. Repeat. The boss will spend most of the last phase on its knees.

Volatile Anomaly Provides the Breathing Room

Volatile Anomaly is the floating summon you can unlock after defeating the Downtown Resonant. You drop it, it fires projectiles at nearby enemies, and it can be thrown as a high-damage projectile. In this fight, its main value is distraction. The Resonant’s AI often targets the anomaly instead of you, especially when the anomaly is attacking. Drop it at the start of the spotlight phase. While the boss focuses on the anomaly, you have two to three seconds to line up your charged hammer strike without dodging. This window alone makes the fight manageable.

If you have the power meter for it, throw the anomaly once it has taken damage. It explodes on impact and inflicts significant falter. Combining throw with a charged hammer will fill the falter gauge instantly, leading to an immediate execution. That execution heals you (thanks to the Dominance buff) and resets the boss’s aggression.

The Counterargument: Drill and Shield

Some players recommend the Drill secondary for its sustained damage over time and the Shield ability for absorbing hits. Drill does apply Weakened status, which increases damage taken. Shield lets you block projectiles and dash through enemies. On paper, this sounds viable. In practice, it falls apart during the spotlight phase. Shield consumes power rapidly. You need that power to stay alive, not just to block. The spotlight already forces you to stay close. Shield encourages you to hold still and absorb, which means you stop moving and risk leaving the light. Drill’s damage over time is useless if you cannot maintain position. You will spend more time dodging out of the light than dealing damage.

Crush and Volatile Anomaly reduce the need to dodge. You stagger the boss before it can attack you. You distract it so you can position freely. That is a far more consistent strategy for a fight that punishes defensive play.

Execution: Step by Step

Before the fight: Equip Crush as your secondary and Volatile Anomaly as one of your three combat abilities. Make sure you have the talent Restorative Dodge – a perfect dodge restores a small amount of health, which helps if you ever slip out of the light.

Phase 1: Use your primary weapon to build power. Do not use Crush here unless the boss is standing still. Save your power for the anomaly.

Spotlight phase start: The moment the room darkens, hold down on the D-pad to enter the Gap. Pause and check that your loadout is correct. Exit.

Drop Volatile Anomaly as soon as the boss becomes targetable again. Let it draw aggro.

Charge Crush while moving to stay inside the light. Release when the boss is within range. Follow up with another charge if the boss does not falter.

Execute once the falter gauge fills. During the execution animation, you are immune. Use that moment to assess the light’s position.

Repeat until the boss is dead. If the anomaly dies, wait for your power to recharge (use primary attacks on the light’s edge if needed) and drop a new one.

This strategy turns a frustrating fight into a two-minute execution loop. The West Incursion Zone Resonant does not require perfect dodging or overwhelming DPS. It requires controlling the space through stagger and distraction. Crush and Volatile Anomaly give you exactly that.

The West Incursion Zone Resonant fight punishes hesitation.
