Growth, Volatile Anomaly, and Spike flood the field with allies that stagger, distract, and apply infected. What separates a good summoner from a great one is the artifact setup — three passive slots that can either double down on the minion army or patch the build’s one real weakness: survivability when you’re the only target.

The game never explains which artifacts actually stack with summon mechanics. Most players default to damage boosts like Fork or Wetstone. That’s a mistake. Here’s what actually matters.

Barbed Blade Is Non-Negotiable

Barbed Blade regenerates health when you’re near a summoned ally. This artifact comes from the “Party Won’t Stop” side quest in the western part of the West Incursion Zone. Pick it up before you fight your first resonant boss — not after.

The trigger range is generous. Drop a growth spore, then stand inside its attack radius while it shoots. You heal passively even while dodging. This turns every combat encounter into a self-sustaining loop: you summon, you fight in the bubble, you take chip damage, and the artifact recovers it.

Pair Barbed Blade with the talent Friendly Farewell (allies drop health elements when they die) and Restorative Summons (kills by your allies drop health). You now have three independent health sources — the artifact itself, the death drops, and the kill drops. Most encounters won’t drain you.

Bout Guard: The Trade-Off That Pays

Bout Guard gives +50% power recovery at the cost of taking 20% more damage. For a summoner, power recovery is oxygen. You need to cycle Volatile Anomaly and Growth as often as possible to keep your army up. Without this artifact, your power bar refills noticeably slower between ability uses.

The 20% extra damage sounds brutal. It isn’t — not if you’re running Barbed Blade and have at least one summon active. The passive healing compensates for the increased incoming damage, especially if you also grab the talent Team Morale (take 5% less damage per summon on the field). With two summons alive, you’re down to 10% extra damage taken. That’s a net win against the power recovery gain.

One caveat: this artifact is a bad pick against enemies that can one-shot or apply burst status effects (mold cloud explosions, resonant boss charge attacks). Against those, swap it out. But for general clearing and zone grinding, it stays equipped.

Lost Prescription: The Safety Net

Lost Prescription adds a 30% chance to restore a small amount of health after a perfect dodge. You can buy it from the downtown vendor for 1,000 source — cheapest artifact in the game.

Summoner builds tend to stay airborne and mobile. You’re already dodging constantly to reposition and to avoid the attacks your summons didn’t draw aggro on. The 30% proc rate triggers often enough to feel consistent. Unlike Barbed Blade, this works even when no summons are active — useful at the start of a fight before you’ve deployed your army.

This artifact also synergizes with the talent Restorative Dodge (perfect dodge recovers a small amount of health). The two stack additively, meaning every perfect dodge gives you the flat heal from the talent plus a separate 30% chance for an additional heal from the artifact. In practice, this turns a good dodge into a full health bar recovery over the course of a long fight.

The Coffee Cup Trap

Coffee Cup heals you out of combat. It sounds useful for a summoner who takes chip damage during fights. Don’t equip it.

Here’s why: you can swap artifacts mid-combat from the loadout menu. Keep Coffee Cup in your inventory. Equip it right before a fight ends or while you’re exploring between encounters. Then swap it out for Barbed Blade or Bout Guard when combat starts. The game lets you do this as long as the artifact isn’t actively in use (i.e., you’re not in the middle of an attack). This free slot management effectively gives you four artifact slots — one for out-of-combat healing, three for combat.

The source mentions this trick: “You can equip this right up until you get into a scrap, then just swap it out for something else.” Most players never do it. That’s the edge.

What to Skip

Fork, Wetstone, and Trusty Spanner all boost direct damage. They do nothing for your summons. Your damage output as a summoner comes from your army’s infected application and the occasional combo finisher you land while they distract. The 100% primary damage boost from Dominance already covers that. These artifacts are for strike/cleave builds, not summoner.

Molding Bar grants immunity to infected and increases damage against mold enemies but cuts your health by 50%. For a summoner, that health penalty is too risky — you need to survive long enough to deploy your army. If you absolutely need it for the Park resident boss fight, equip it, but swap back immediately after.

The Full Loadout

For most content, run Barbed Blade + Bout Guard + Lost Prescription. Against burst-heavy bosses, replace Bout Guard with an artifact that boosts survivability (Coffe Cup is viable here, swapped in before the fight, then swapped out). Against mold zones, replace Lost Prescription with a damage-focused artifact if you’re confident in your dodge.

One last detail: the Exchange Recents function in the Gap lets you refund an artifact unlock if you test it in the training arena and decide you don’t like it. This works even after you’ve spent the resources, as long as you haven’t left the Gap. Use this to try Barbed Blade and Bout Guard together before committing. Leave the Gap only when you’re sure.

You already know the summoner build works.
