It feels obvious — beat the boss, get a shiny new ability, increase your power. But this triggers a resonant cycle that resets every zone, respawns tougher enemies, and locks you out of easy experience. Most players hit a wall around hour five and don’t understand why. This isn’t a guide that tells you obvious stuff you’d find anyway. It’s the counterintuitive truth that changes how the whole game feels.

Here are the ten things I genuinely wish I’d known before starting.

1. Stop Killing Resonants Too Early

Every time you defeat a Resonant boss, the world levels up. Enemies across all zones get harder. New enemy types appear in areas you already cleared. And the world feats — the white icon activities that give the best zone experience — get harder, too. If you rush through multiple bosses without completing side content first, you’ll find yourself facing skull-level enemies with no way to catch up except grinding at a higher difficulty.

The fix: do every world feat in a zone before killing that zone’s Resonant. Once the cycle hits, you’ll get a fresh batch of world feats at a higher tier. You can farm them again for even more zone XP. This is how you stay ahead of the difficulty curve instead of always playing catch-up.

2. Assist Mode Sliders Are Not Cheating

The game gently warns you not to touch assist mode — it says the game is meant to be “challenging but rewarding.” Ignore that. There are sliders for outgoing damage and outgoing filter that work in both directions. I set my outgoing damage to 150%, and combat instantly felt faster and more responsive without being trivial. You can also make the game harder if you want.

This is the single biggest quality-of-life change nobody talks about. Try it. If combat feels sluggish, this is your fix.

3. Your Starting Weapon Isn’t Permanent — And You Can Test for Free

The game makes a big deal about choosing your first aberrant form. But you can unlock every other form later using living shards bought from vendors. More importantly, in the gap (hold down on the D-pad), you can use the “exchange recents” function immediately after unlocking a weapon or ability. This refunds the living shard, letting you try any weapon in the training arena before committing. As long as you don’t leave the gap, you can test every single option for free.

Don’t waste shards on a weapon you hate. Test first, lock in later.

4. Forget Raw Damage — Focus on Falter and Status Effects

Regular attacks in Control Resonant do mediocre damage. That’s by design. The real combat loop is about building up the yellow falter bar under an enemy. When it fills, you can execute them, triggering dominance — a temporary buff that doubles your primary damage and boosts secondary damage by 50% for eight seconds. Killing enemies during dominance drops health orbs.

So stop mashing. Use quick attacks to build falter, then execute. Rinse and repeat. The game rewards you for playing aggressive but also smart.

5. You Can Swap Your Entire Loadout Mid-Combat

This took me hours to discover. Open the loadout menu during a fight, and you can change your primary weapon, secondary weapon, combo finisher, and artifacts — as long as the weapon isn’t actively being used. There’s an artifact called the Coffee Cup that heals you outside combat. Equip it until you enter a fight, then swap to something more useful like the Fork (blunt damage boost). You can also switch to a hammer form to break armor for one encounter, then switch back to daggers.

Keep your inventory flexible. The game never tells you this.

6. Living Shards Buy New Forms — And They’re Rare

Living shards are the resource used to unlock new primary, secondary, and combo finisher forms. You get them from major story events, side quests, and by buying them from vendors for 4,000 souls each. They are your most valuable currency. Do not spend souls on other vendor items until you have bought every living shard you can. Unlocking a new form adds five points to your aberrant strength, which directly increases your damage multiplier. Even if you never plan to use the new form, unlocking it makes you stronger.

Prioritize living shards above everything else in the shop.

7. Get Traversal Abilities Before Anything Else

Two dimensional faults give you abilities that transform exploration: the gravity shift in the West Incursion Zone (enables wall-walking on patterned surfaces) and reach in the Evacuation Zone (lets you grapple to spatial anomalies). Without these, huge portions of the map are inaccessible. Make them your first priority after the opening hours — they also make combat drastically easier by letting you reposition anywhere.

8. Upgrade Every Aberrant Form, Not Just Your Favorite

Every node you unlock in any weapon tree adds to your aberrant strength. The top node of each form gives +5; lower nodes give +1 to +3. If you only invest in one weapon, you’re leaving 30+ points of damage multiplier on the table. The cheapest way to boost aberrant strength is to unlock the base node of each combo finisher — six living shards for a +30 total. After that, work down the trees of weapons you don’t use.

Your main weapon hits harder because of upgrades you put into other weapons.

9. There’s a Hidden Difference Between Dodge Attack and Combo Continue

After dodging, if you tap attack immediately, you do a dodge attack. If you wait a split second — about a quarter of a second — you’ll continue your combo from where it left off instead. This is crucial for landing your combo finisher after dodging an incoming hit. Practice the timing. It’s the difference between mashing and playing with intention. The game never explains this, and it will change how you handle every fight.

10. Use “Exchange Recents” to Try Every Ability Before Choosing

After you defeat a Resonant boss, you’re forced to pick one of two or three new combat abilities. The game lets you test each one in the gap’s arena. But here’s what it doesn’t say: if you pick one, then open the ability screen and choose “exchange recents,” you can switch to a different ability for free — as long as you haven’t exited the gap yet. This means you can try all options, then lock in the one that actually works for your build, without spending a reset item.

Don’t guess. Test every single ability this way.

One thing I didn’t cover but wish I’d known: the “Complete Set” side quest in the downtown auction house gives you an artifact called the Bout Guard — it increases power recovery by 50% but makes you take 20% more damage. It’s a fantastic tradeoff for aggressive builds, but the quest start is a bouncing speaker that’s easy to miss. Grab it early. It will supercharge your combat loop.

The biggest mistake you can make in Control Resonant is killing a Resonant boss the moment you’re able.
