It breaks armor in two hits and opens horizontal doors that lock away health and power upgrades. But using it well means understanding its quirks. Here are five specific ways to turn the hammer from a slow club into a room-clearer.

1. Use the Charged Attack to Break Armor and Doors

The hammer’s charged attack does not just do more damage—it is the only reliable way to break armor on Hiss Heavies (the enemies with the military-vest icon). One full charge removes their armor completely, letting your primary weapon deal raw damage. The same charged swing opens the horizontal metal doors you find on the ground. Switch to Crush from your loadout screen (even mid-combat, as long as you are not swinging), line up a charge, and the door pops. This gives you access to secret rooms with upgrade materials and sometimes a health upgrade point.

2. Cancel the Recovery Animation with a Jump

The hammer’s heavy swing leaves Dylan standing still for almost a full second after each hit. That recovery window is long enough for a Hiss Elevated to land a projectile. Press jump immediately after the attack connects—the exact moment the hammer hits the enemy. You cancel the recovery and can start another charged attack from the air. This lets you chain four or five charged swings in the time it would normally take to land three. The jump cancel works for both ground and air attacks. Practice it on the test dummy in the Gap before you take it into combat.

3. Stack Damage by Holding the Button Longer

Not all button presses are equal. If you tap the heavy attack button quickly, the hammer does a three-hit combo with no extra damage per swing. If you hold each press just a fraction of a second longer—enough for one more brick to appear on the hammer head—each swing deals about 15% more damage. The damage difference is visible on the training dummy: a fully pressed charge hits for roughly 1200 at mid-game, while a quick tap charge hits for 1050. Use long presses when you have a clear opening; use short taps when you need speed to build falter quickly.

4. Pair Crush with Inferno for Instant Mold Clearing

The Crush hammer does blunt damage, which is weak against mold enemies. The Factory Resident (fought in Central) unlocks the Inferno combat ability—a rapid-fire punch that applies burn. Switch to Inferno, then immediately follow up with a charged hammer swing. The fire damage from Inferno stacks burn on the mold enemy, and the hammer’s blunt damage breaks any armor the mold may have. The burn procs extra damage every tick, so the mold dies in half the time. This is the fastest way to clear the Park zone’s mold-heavy encounters without respeccing.

5. Use the Exchange Recents Function to Test Crush First

Before you spend two Living Shards to permanently unlock Crush, you can test it for free. After purchasing a new weapon form in the Gap (the mental hub), the “Exchange Recent” option appears in the bottom-right of the weapon menu. Click it, and the shards are refunded—you can buy the hammer, test it in the Gap’s training arena, and decide if you like the timing. As long as you do not leave the Gap, you can swap between forms without spending a single resource. This also works for combo finishers and primary forms. Most players skip this and regret a wasted shard.

The Hammer’s Real Weakness: It Costs Power to Build Your Combo

Every swing of Crush consumes a small amount of power—the resource bar for combat abilities. If you are spamming charged attacks, you drain power fast. The fix is simple: weave in Light Attack combos between heavy swings to regenerate power. A full three-hit Light combo recovers about 30% of your power bar, enough for two more charged hammer hits. Keep the rhythm: Light, Light, Light (power regen), then Charged Hammer (falter building), repeat. That loop keeps your abilities available for emergency shields or summons.

The Crush secondary form is a giant hammer that deals massive blunt damage and builds falter (the yellow stagger bar) faster than any other weapon.
