Unlock the Park Resonant boss, grab the summon, and you’ve got a turret that distracts enemies and builds infected status. Simple, right?

Not quite. After spending 40 hours with both of the Park Resonant’s abilities — Growth and Spore Burst — I’ve found the common recommendation is incomplete. Growth has real downsides that most guides ignore. And in many fights, the alternative is flat-out better.

Let’s break down where the advice falls short, and when you should actually pick Spore Burst instead.

The Standard Argument for Growth

Growth summons a mold ally that fires projectiles at nearby enemies. It applies the infected status, deals steady damage, and draws aggro. Guides point to its synergy with talents like Enduring Ally (50% longer lifetime) and Friendly Farewell (health drops when the summon dies). On paper, it’s a self-sufficient distraction that keeps pressure off you while you focus on larger threats.

That sounds great. Here’s what the guides leave out.

The Hidden Cost of the Mold Turret

Growth costs 60% of your power bar. That’s a massive chunk. After summoning it, you’ll have very little power left for other abilities — including the critical Inferno or Ignite fire skills you need to fight mold enemies in the same zone. You become a one-trick summoner until your power recharges.

The turret itself is fragile. Without the Enduring Ally talent (which requires at least three talent points spent in the summon branch), the ally lasts about 10 seconds in sustained combat. Hiss heavies with area attacks will kill it in two hits. Mold enemies — the very enemies you’re trying to counter — are immune to the infected status the turret applies. So against the zone’s primary threat, Growth is nearly useless.

The summon also moves unpredictably. It’s not a stationary turret. It lurches toward enemies, often putting itself in the line of fire. You cannot control its positioning. That makes it unreliable for setting up the infected + burn explosion combo that many builds rely on. The ally will wander away from the enemy you’re focusing.

Where Spore Burst Dominates

Spore Burst is the alternative: a rapid-fire mold projectile that shoots in a straight line. It’s often dismissed as “just a machine gun.” But it solves every problem Growth has.

Cost: Spore Burst uses only 25% power per burst. You can fire it twice or three times per full bar, applying infected to multiple enemies rapidly.

Range: You can hit distant enemies, including airborne Hiss Elevated, without closing distance.

Control: You aim directly. The infected status lands exactly where you want it. This makes the burn explosion combo (infected + Ignite) trivial to set up.

No talent tax: Spore Burst works well with zero talent points invested. It’s effective immediately, no matter your build.

In any fight where you need to spread infected quickly — especially against groups of shielded Hiss or fast-moving enemies — Spore Burst outperforms Growth by a wide margin.

When Growth Is Actually the Better Choice

I’m not saying Growth is worthless. It has two specific niches.

First, if you are building a full summoner loadout — choosing Volatile Anomaly and later Spike from other Resoants — Growth adds a third summon. With the Mold Colony talent (+1 max ally), you can have two Growth turrets and one Volatile Anomaly on the field simultaneously. That creates a constant stream of infected procs and distractions. Second, Growth is strong in boss fights where the boss has no area attacks and you can afford to let power recharge behind cover. The turret’s chip damage adds up over a long fight.

But those scenarios are situational. The common advice presents Growth as universally superior. It’s not.

The Verdict: Stop Picking Based on Hype

If you are early in the game, have few talent points, and are still learning combat — pick Spore Burst. It gives immediate range, cheap status application, and doesn’t lock you into a specific talent path. You can always respec later using a reset item (costs 1,500 source from vendors). Growth becomes good only after you’ve unlocked Enduring Ally and Mold Colony, which requires defeating multiple Resoants and reaching zone level 5 or 6.

Most guides were written by players who had already invested heavily in the summon talent tree. They forgot what the ability feels like with zero support. Don’t make the same mistake. Pick the tool that fits your build now, not the one that sounds best in a late-game loadout.

META_DESCRIPTION: Most guides say to pick Growth. But the mold turret has hidden downsides. Here’s when Spore Burst is actually better for your build.

“Always pick Growth — it’s the best mold ability.” That’s what almost every guide says.
