But if you use it to block, you are missing the point entirely. Remedy removed parrying during development precisely because it made combat too passive. The Shield, despite its name, is an aggressive enabler. It exists not to keep you safe, but to make you dangerous.

How to Unlock the Shield Ability

The Shield is one of three combat abilities you can earn by defeating The Artist, the first resonant boss you encounter in Central Manhattan. The fight triggers naturally as you progress through the main story — you cannot miss it.

After the battle, you enter the Gap and face a choice between three abilities from the Falter category:

Barrage – ranged projectiles that build falter slowly.

Volatile Anomaly – a floating summon you can throw for big burst damage.

Shield – a power-draining barrier that can also be dashed through enemies.

The game does not tell you that the correct pick for aggressive play is the Shield. Choose it. (You can respec later with a Reset Item if you change your mind, but you likely won’t.)

Why “Blocking” Is the Wrong Reflex

Most action games train you to raise a shield and wait for an opening. Control Resonant punishes that instinct. Enemies swarm, projectiles fly everywhere, and standing still is death. The Shield has a narrow window of usefulness as a damage stopper. Its real value is Shield Bash — press the attack button while dashing with the Shield active, and Dylan slams forward, dealing high falter (stagger) damage to any enemy in his path.

A single Shield Bash can instantly fill the falter meter on smaller enemies. That means you can execute them immediately, triggering Dominance. Dominance doubles your primary weapon damage and boosts secondary damage by 50% for 8 seconds. It also guarantees health drops on kills during that window.

Here is the loop you should internalize: enter a fight, pop the Shield (costs power), dash-bash a grunt, execute it, gain Dominance, then turn on the heavy enemies while your damage is doubled. Rinse and repeat. The Shield is not a safety net — it is a combo starter that feeds your entire offensive cycle.

Talents That Turn the Shield Into a Weapon

The talent tree has specific nodes that amplify the Shield’s aggressive potential. Prioritize these as soon as you have points:

Restorative Dodge – recover health on perfect dodges. This lets you stay aggressive without backing off to heal.

Sanctioned Retaliation – dodge counterattacks restore 50% more power. More power means more Shield uptime.

Enhanced Dominance – extends the Dominance duration to 15 seconds. That is nearly double the window for wrecking enemies.

None of these talents directly mention “Shield,” but they all support the play style the Shield enables: constant pressure, frequent executions, and sustained high damage.

Advanced Use: Fire Shield and Multi-Target Control

Once you unlock the Ignite combat ability from the Factory resonant (the Deserter), you can use it while the Shield is active. The result is a fire-infused barrier. Any enemy you bash with the Shield now takes burn damage on top of falter. Against mold enemies — which are weak to fire — this combo ends encounters in seconds.

You can also use the Shield to herd enemies. Dash through a crowd and the bash sends them flying backward, often off ledges or into environmental hazards. The map is full of vertical drops and patterned geometry. One well-placed Shield Bash can remove a threat permanently without depleting a single bar of the enemy’s health.

A Common Mistake to Avoid

Players often hold the Shield up and wait, thinking it will protect them from sustained fire. It will not. The Shield consumes power continuously while active, and once your power runs out, you are vulnerable. Use it in short bursts — activate, bash, deactivate, attack. The ability is not meant to stay up longer than a second or two.

If you find yourself relying on the Shield to survive, you are better off investing in mobility talents instead. Perfect dodges and aerial combat are far more reliable defense mechanisms in Control Resonant. The Shield is a scalpel, not a shield wall.

The developer cut parrying for a reason. They want you moving forward, not back. The Shield ability fits that philosophy perfectly — but only if you stop thinking of it as protection and start using it as initiation. Go bash something.

You are holding it wrong.
