It triggers a “resonant cycle” that resets the entire open world. Enemies respawn tougher. World feats reappear. And your zone levels can keep climbing.

But “reset” doesn’t mean what you think. Your zone level number stays. So do your upgrades. What changes is the state of each zone — and that’s exactly what you want to manipulate.

Here’s how the cycle works, what actually resets, and why you should trigger it deliberately rather than accidentally.

What Actually Resets When You Defeat a Resonant

The moment you kill any Resonant — the Artist in the prologue, the Deserter in the Factory, the Collective in the Park — the entire map cycles. Every zone’s enemies respawn. Their levels increase by one across the board. New enemy types called “Apex” variants get mixed into encounters you already cleared.

World feats also reappear. In Central zone, for example, the “Hold the Line” encounter and the “Hiss Hive” activity reset instantly. You can complete them again for zone XP, source, and upgrade materials.

Zone level does not reset. If Central was level 3 before the cycle, it stays level 3. But your progress toward the next zone level (the XP bar within that zone) resets to zero — and the feats that give you the most XP are back. That means you can grind the same activities repeatedly to push zones higher.

Why You Might Want to Trigger a Cycle

Higher zone levels unlock permanent bonuses per zone. In Central, reaching zone level 6 marks all large resource crates on the map. In the West Incursion Zone, level 4 gives you increased source drops from enemies. In the Evacuation Zone, level 5 unlocks a new vendor tier that sells living shards for 4,000 source each.

The only way to get those bonuses is to earn zone XP. World feats are the most efficient source. Each one gives around 80–120 zone XP depending on the zone’s current level. But feats are one-time activities — until you cycle.

By defeating a Resonant, you refresh every feat in every zone. That means you can clear all the feats in Central, then beat the Factory Resident, then clear them again. Each cycle adds another round of XP.

One specific example: the “Complete Set” quest in the Downtown auction house involves placing speakers and solving a puzzle. After a cycle, that quest reappears. You can repeat it for its source reward and the additional zone XP it grants in Downtown.

The Cost: Everything Gets Harder

Every cycle raises enemy levels across all zones. If you defeat two Resonants before doing many side activities, you might find level 5 enemies in Central while your build power is still 8. That’s a skull icon next to their health bar — and it means combat becomes a slog.

In Central, after one cycle, basic Hiss Guards go from level 3 to level 4. They gain new attack patterns. The “Hiss Elevated” flying enemies start spawning in places they didn’t before. Mold enemies in the Park also scale, and without the fire ability from the Factory Resident, they become nearly unkillable.

The trade-off is clear: you get more ways to earn XP, but each encounter demands better gear and higher aberrant strength.

How to Reset Strategically — Not Accidentally

First, finish every world feat and side quest in a zone before defeating any Resonant in that area. Feats spawn at fixed positions on the map. Clear them all. Then kill the zone’s Resonant. After the cycle, the feats respawn and you can clear them again, earning that zone’s XP a second time.

Second, don’t kill all Resonants back-to-back. Some players rush through three Resonants in two hours. By the third cycle, enemies in the starting zones are level 7 or higher, but those players haven’t upgraded their weapons or talents enough to cope. The game’s difficulty plateaus abruptly.

Instead, kill one Resonant, then spend several hours raising your zone levels, crafting artifacts, and unlocking new weapon forms. Once you feel comfortable, kill the next one.

Third, prioritize the traversal abilities from the dimensional faults before fighting any optional Resonant. The gravity shift ability in the West Incursion Zone’s parking garage and the reach ability in the Evacuation Zone’s subway vault let you access new areas. Those areas contain more world feats and resource crates — more XP before you cycle again.

What Does NOT Reset

Your character level — called build power — stays exactly where it was. Your aberrant strength, talent points, artifact loadout, and equipped weapons all remain. Your zone level number does not decrease. Health upgrades and power upgrades you’ve collected are permanent.

Only the world state resets: enemy positions, drop materials, world feats, and side activities that aren’t part of the main story.

This means you can never undo a cycle. Once you kill a Resonant, the world is tougher forever in that playthrough. The only way to lower difficulty is through assist mode sliders in the settings menu, which adjust outgoing damage and incoming damage independently.

The One Mistake That Costs You

The worst mistake is killing the last Resonant before you’ve leveled zones high enough to unlock the “mark large resource crates” bonus. Without that bonus, you have to find health and power upgrades by memory or luck. Once all Resonants are dead, there are no more cycles. World feats stop respawning. You’re stuck with whatever zone levels you earned.

In my playthrough, I reached the final cycle with Central at level 7 and the Underpass at level 4. I wanted the Underpass’s level-6 bonus — enemy health elements drop more frequently. But I had run out of feats to grind because I’d cycled too fast. The only option left was to replay story missions, which give minimal zone XP.

So plan your cycles. Finish a zone’s feats. Kill a Resonant. Repeat. That’s how you reset your zone level progression without resetting your progress.

Defeating a Resonant boss in Control Resonant does something the game barely explains.
