You’ve picked a faction, chosen a class, and you’re ready to hit level 45. But the first few hours after that are where most players waste days of progress. The guides floating around right now are either outdated (Korean/Taiwan balance from two seasons ago) or skip the traps that cost you real time. Here’s the direct answer: The biggest early mistakes in AION 2 are ignoring the preload, choosing a server without coordinating with friends, blindly following old tier lists, wasting Odal energy on low-level dungeons, breaking your class runes, and hoarding the wrong resources. Avoid these six and you’ll hit 1,400 gear score in half the time.

Mistake 1: Not Preloading and Misjudging the Download

Preload is live now. It’s 81 GB. You don’t need a founder’s pack to download it — anyone can preload the free-to-play version. The mistake? Assuming your play test files will carry over. They won’t. You have to download the retail client separately. If you wait until October 5th (free launch) or even September 30th (early access), you’ll be staring at a progress bar for hours while others hit the ground running. Do this before launch day.

Mistake 2: Picking a Server and Faction Without a Backup Plan

Early access worlds open September 30th. New servers for free players open October 5th. The trap: buying a founder’s pack, joining an early access world, and assuming your free-to-play friends can join you later. Worlds fill up. If your server locks, you’re separated. Factions also matter — Elyos and Asmodian can’t play together, and they use separate home worlds. Choose your region (NA East, NA West, South America, Central Europe, Japan) and your world before you commit. No Oceanic server exists yet. Transfers are “eventually planned” — don’t count on them at launch.

Mistake 3: Treating Tier Lists as Gospel for the Global Version

Global launches on a modified Season 1 setup. The Korean and Taiwan clients are ahead, and their old season 1 tier lists don’t apply — global has changed class balance, gear progression, and pet systems. The test server was short and limited. That “S-tier” class from a 2023 video? It might be bottom-tier now. Pick your class for playstyle first. If you want a safe bet for solo start, ranger, spiritmaster, and sorcerer are favored by recent CN analysis because early gear compresses range loot — but that’s not official. Play what feels good. You’ll perform better on a class you enjoy than on one you forced.

Mistake 4: Burning Odal Energy on the Wrong Dungeons

Your Odal energy is precious. The instinct is to spam the first dungeon you unlock (Draupnir) to get gear. But you only need three runs there for the pity box — looting three times gives you a guaranteed yellow piece. After that, stop. Don’t waste energy on Draupnir conquest if you can already run Vakron Sky Island at 1,400 gear score. The real gear upgrades come from two-star dungeons. Also, don’t use Odal energy on exploration mode for Draupnir at all — exploration is easier but drops worse loot. Save your energy for Vakron or later dungeons. And if you can, run the 10 weekly dungeons without using energy (the “help” runs) to get achievement stats for free.

Mistake 5: Enhancing Class Runes Past +1 Without a Backup

Class runes (Clash runes) give massive gear score — about 40 each. You get four from side quests and a few more from nightmare and shops. The mistake? Trying to push them past +1 or +2. The success chance drops fast, and when you fail, the rune is destroyed. You can’t easily replace them early. I’ve seen players lose both runes and sit 80 gear score short of the 1,000 needed to finish the main story. Only enhance them if you have a spare from a quest or shop. Otherwise, leave them at +1. The gear score gain isn’t worth the risk.

Mistake 6: Ignoring the Space-Time Rift for Enhancement Stones

Enhancement stones are the bottleneck for gearing: you need them to level your weapon, guard, belt, amulet, and armor. The daily dungeon gives some, but the real jackpot is the space-time rift. Every three hours (starting at 7 a.m. server time), a purple rift opens that teleports 500 players to the opposing faction’s map. Sealed dungeons there reward 2,500 enhancement stones each. Six quests from Shugo also give stones. If you skip this, you’ll be stuck buying stones from the auction house or grinding slow daily tasks. Set an alarm. Do the rift. It’s one hour of effort that saves you a day of farming.

One more thing most guides miss: the Shugo Festival hourly event gives Deva crystals and enhancement stones that can push you over a gear score threshold without spending Odal energy. It opens at the start of each hour. You only have a minute to enter. Do it between rifts. That extra 100 gear score from buying out the crystal shop can be the difference between running Vakron or farming Draupnir for another day.

You know the basics.
