That advice sounds safe. It’s also incomplete—and in some cases, flat-out wrong for the Global launch.

AION 2 Global isn’t a simple port of the Korean or Taiwan versions. NCsoft modified the progression curve, gearing paths, pet systems, and even class balance. The “proven” strategies from overseas can cost you time, resources, or a spot next to your friends.

Here are 10 steps that challenge the conventional wisdom—actions you should take before you ever open the character creator.

1. Do Not Buy the Ultimate Edition for Combat Advantage

The $100 Ultimate edition includes a black dragon pet that doubles as a mount. It also grants 5-day early access and a 30-day membership—same as the $10 Standard pack.

The pet is maxed from the start but provides zero combat stats. It gives traversal convenience, not power. If you’re buying Ultimate expecting a head start in damage or survivability, you’re paying $90 for cosmetics and a shortcut to a basic mount you could earn in a few days.

Pick the $10 Standard edition unless you genuinely want the skins.

2. Ignore Every “Launch Tier List” You See

The Global test server was short and limited. Korean and Taiwan tier lists from their Season 1 are irrelevant—Global launches on a modified setup with compressed gear and different progression.

The only reliable early analysis (from a CN creator who played the Global build) favored Ranger, Spiritmaster, and Sorcerer for solo starts, specifically because early gearing now favors ranged classes. But that’s one opinion, not a definitive ranking.

Choose your class by playstyle first. If you love melee burst, play Assassin. If you want guaranteed group spots, play Templar or Cleric. Tier lists that don’t match your version are noise.

3. Do Not Assume Your Free-to-Play Friends Can Join Your Early Access World

This is the single biggest coordination trap. Early Access worlds open September 30 for founder pack owners. Free-to-play launch is October 5.

You assume your friends will log in on the 5th and join your server. Worlds can fill up. If your EA world reaches capacity, your friends are locked out. They’ll have to pick a launch world—and you can’t transfer off an EA world to join them (transfers are planned but timing is unconfirmed, usually weeks or months after launch).

Agree on a primary server and a backup server before anyone spends money. If your friends are going free-to-play, consider rolling on a launch world yourself to avoid the split.

4. Check Your Ping Before You Pick a Server Region

The Global client offers NA East, NA West, South America, Central Europe, and Japan. No Oceania region (yet).

Ping matters more in AION 2 than most MMOs. Attack timing, combo windows, and skill overlap all degrade with latency. A “low but spiking” 50ms connection feels worse than a steady 45ms.

Test your route to each region using a ping optimization tool (like LagZapper or Gear Booster) during the preload period. Do not pick a region based on population alone—if your ping to NA West is 80ms but NA East is 40ms, play East. The community hasn’t settled on a “main” region yet, so you won’t miss out.

5. Do Not Follow Korean Pet Progression Guides

Global pet progression is capped at level 3. Korean guides tell you to push pets to level 5 for specific bonuses. You cannot reach level 5 in Global at launch.

This applies to break points for pet skills, enhancement stones, and even which pets to prioritize. The Cogni pet (grants Might stat) is still strong, but the route to maxing it is different.

Use overseas guides only to identify traps, not to copy numbers. Verify every break point against live Global data before spending resources.

6. Enter the Abyss at Gear Score 1,000—Immediately

Common advice says “do side quests and sealed dungeons first.” That’s fine, but the moment you hit 1,000 gear score, stop everything and enter the Abyss.

The Abyss contains feathers you collect and turn in at monoliths for permanent item level. Early access players who rushed this on day one had an empty zone—no PvP interference, no competition. They finished in 40 minutes.

Wait even a day, and the zone fills with enemy faction players hunting you. What took them 40 minutes will take you 2+ hours.

Prioritize Abyss feathers before anything else at 1,000 gear score. This single step saves hours of frustration.

7. Do Not Enhance Your Clash Runes Past +1 Until You Have Spares

You get four Clash runes from side quests. Each one is worth ~40 gear score. Enhancing them with a +2 attempt has an 80% success rate—failure destroys the rune.

The community is already reporting players who bricked all four runes and stalled their progression. You can buy replacement runes from the Nightmare trade shop, but that requires tokens and time.

Take the guaranteed +1 on all four runes. Only risk a +2 attempt when you have a spare rune from a source you can repeat (e.g., the Nightmare shop).

8. Do Not Waste Odal Energy on One-Star Dungeons You’ve Outgeared

Once you hit 1,400 gear score, you unlock two-star dungeons (Vakron Sky Island, etc.). Common advice says “run everything for gear.” But Odal energy is capped weekly.

If you spend your energy on one-star dungeons (Draupnir, level 54 gear) after you already have 1,400+ gear score, you’re burning the resource that could get you 1,600+ gear score from Vakron.

Run one-star dungeons only until you have three pieces of yellow gear from the pity box. Then stop and save Odal energy for two-star content. You can always come back to one-star for achievement stats later without spending energy (free runs, no loot cube).

9. Change These Three Settings Immediately

Most guides skip this, but these defaults hurt your experience:

Teleport effect color: Set to dark (default is bright white—blinding every time you teleport).

Display weapon outside of combat: Turn on (weapons vanish by default, looks bad and feels wrong).

Camera shake during combat: Turn off (it’s distracting, especially during fast rotations).

These are not subjective tweaks—the bright teleport effect alone can cause eye strain over long sessions. Fix them before you play for more than 10 minutes.

10. Do Not Trust Any “Day 1” Guide That Didn’t Play the Global Build

The Global test server was limited to a small group for a short window. Many content creators are producing guides based on Korean or Taiwan footage, or even the older Season 1 client.

Cross-reference every specific number—pet break points, enhancement costs, dungeon gear scores—against actual Global live data. If a guide says “you can get to level 5 pet,” it’s wrong for Global. If it says “enhance your weapon to +15 first,” it may be wasting your enhancement stones when +10 is sufficient for the next milestone.

Use creators who explicitly state they played the Global build and show their in-game UI. Everyone else is guessing.

The single most important decision you make before character creation is server and faction coordination with your friends—not your class, not your founder pack, not your tier list. Get that wrong, and you may not be able to play together for weeks. Get it right, and every other choice becomes manageable.

One last nuance: if you are a solo player or plan to PvP heavily, consider rolling on a launch world even if you bought early access. Launch worlds will have a more even population split between factions, and you won’t be competing against founder pack players who had a 5-day head start. The gear gap in early access worlds can be punishing for a solo player who starts on October 5th.

Everyone tells you the same thing: pick a class from a tier list, buy the biggest founder’s pack, and coordinate servers with friends.
