Two-star dungeons drop better gear, period. Vakron Sky Island and Urugugu Canyon hand out item level 70 yellows, while one-star Draupnir Caverns caps out at item level 54. Yet the players who climb fastest after hitting the cap are often the ones farming the lower bracket, because the one-star bracket costs almost no energy and pays guaranteed gear on a fixed schedule.

The choice between one-star and two-star dungeons is not a difficulty question. It is an energy-efficiency question. Odell energy is the real currency of AION 2’s early endgame, and every dungeon run spends it. Players who spend that energy on two-star conquest runs before their gear score reaches 1400 tend to stall. Players who route through exploration-mode pity boxes, regardless of dungeon tier, keep moving.

Here is the direct answer: run Draupnir Caverns in exploration mode until you have three pity boxes, then switch to Vakron Sky Island exploration for another three. That sequence, combined with green quest rewards and Deva board spending, carries most fresh 45 characters from roughly 700 gear score to the 1400 threshold required for two-star conquest content. After 1400, the one-star bracket stops being a gear score tool and becomes something else entirely: achievement fodder and transfer-stone fuel.

What each bracket actually gives you

One-star dungeons, primarily Draupnir Caverns (also called Drop Near), drop item level 54 yellow gear. The pieces are modest, but they come from a reliable source: every three exploration-mode loot runs, the pity box lets you select a specific yellow item of your choice. That guaranteed selection is the single most predictable gear score gain in the game.

Two-star dungeons — Vakron Sky Island and Urugugu Canyon — drop item level 70 yellow gear. Vakron covers armor and the guard slot. Urugugu Canyon drops accessories and off-hand weapons, which makes it the right place to chase a specific ring or necklace, but the drops are not guaranteed by a pity system in the same way.

The gear score per item tells the story. A fresh Draupnir yellow piece at +5 with mana stones can close a 50-to-80 point gap in your score. Three Vakron-level pieces, one source reports, are enough to carry a character from 1100 to 1400 if the other systems are also complete. But the two-star pieces only help if you can actually reach the dungeon. The gate for Vakron Sky Island is 1400. The gate for Draupnir is roughly 700. That gap is the whole argument for starting low.

The milestone map from 700 to 2100

Gear score in AION 2 moves through discrete gates, and each gate unlocks a specific piece of content. Knowing which gate you are standing at determines which dungeon, if any, you should be running.

700 to 1000: one-star carries the climb

You hit level 45 around 700 gear score. The first goal is 1000, which unlocks the final main story quest. The path: finish every green quest on the map, complete the sealed dungeons, and spend the resulting Deva crystals on your Deva boards. Every crystal spent is gear score. Every board node is combat power.

Draupnir fits here. In exploration mode, loot the final area three times for the pity box and select one yellow piece. A second and third pity box, plus any incidental drops, will usually carry you the rest of the way. At this stage the one-star bracket is not a compromise. It is the most reliable tool available.

1000 to 1400: the gap that stalls most players

Once the main story is finished, you gain the abyss bracelet, which should go to +10 or +11 immediately. That item stays relevant for months. The remaining climb to 1400 comes from Clash runes, belt and amulet upgrades, and one more Draupnir pass.

Clash runes are worth 60 gear score each, and two of them arrive from specific green quests. The belt and amulet, which start green, can be enhanced to +10 and then morphed through substance morph into blue, then yellow. Each morph is a large gear score jump, and the enhancement stones to fuel it come from rifts that spawn every three hours into the opposing faction’s territory. This is also where the Shugo Festival matters: its shop sells Deva crystals, and those convert directly into board points.

1400 to 1600: two-star expeditions, three runs each

At 1400, Vakron Sky Island opens. Do not enter conquest mode yet. Run it in exploration mode three times, take the pity box, and select the largest upgrade you can identify. Players who did this at 1400 commonly landed five pieces of item level 70 gear at +5, with weapon or guard pushed to +11.

Urugugu Canyon is the alternative at this bracket. It drops accessories and weapons, which are the hardest slots to fill in the early game. The catch is that the drop table is not pity-protected in the same way. One player reported getting lucky on a weapon after a single session; another spent the same energy with nothing to show for it. If your missing slots are rings, necklace, or an off-hand, Urugugu is worth the gamble. If you need armor, Vakron exploration is the consistent play.

1600 to 2100: the no-dungeon stretch

From 1600, dungeons stop being the fastest gear score source. Transcendence takes over. The Arcana card system provides 40 gear score per green card, 200 for a full set of five. That alone bridges 1600 to 1800. Replacing greens with blues adds 20 more per card, another 100 gear score. The climb to 2000 and 2100 is mostly card upgrades, plus one piece of expedition gear swapped for a Vakron item with an extra mana stone slot.

Running one-star content during this stretch is a trap. The gear score return per energy spent is worse than every other option. The exception is the achievement system, which changes the calculation entirely.

Pity boxes: three runs versus 21

The exploration-mode pity box requires three loot runs, not three full clears. This is a meaningful distinction. Draupnir in exploration mode can be looted, not finished, and the same applies to Vakron Sky Island. The community shorthand is “loot three times,” and it works because the pity count progresses on loot, not on completion.

Conquest mode is a different animal. A Vakron conquest pity box requires 21 runs. Draupnir conquest is similar. That is a seven-to-one ratio in exploration’s favor, which is why every early progression guide routes players through expedition mode first. Conquest exists for better incidental drops and for achievements. It is not the place to chase your first guaranteed gear.

The energy math supports this. Across the early-access progression guides that tracked these runs, the three-run exploration box consistently delivered guaranteed gear before a conquest player finished a single pity cycle. If you are under 1600 gear score, exploration is the correct mode, every time.

The weekly cap that punishes variety

AION 2 gives every player a weekly allowance of 10 dungeon runs that do not consume the Odell energy cube. These are free runs, but there is a catch that has already stranded early-access players: if you complete 10 runs in a week without opening the cube at the end, you are locked out of all dungeons until the weekly reset.

The workaround is to run nine free, then open the cube on the tenth, or to simply finish all 10 on the same day the allowance resets. Timing matters more than which dungeon you choose. Wasting the free allowance on a mix of one-star and two-star runs is how players end up with a scattered gear set and no pity progress anywhere.

The achievement statue that changes the math

Here is where the one-star bracket becomes relevant again at higher gear scores. Draupnir Caverns has an achievement tied to conquest mode: complete it 10 times and you receive a statue with meaningful combat stats. The statue is not gear score. It is a permanent stat boost that sits in your collection and applies regardless of what you equip.

Top players treat the 10 conquest runs as a mandatory weekly chore, ideally on the day the free allowance resets, because the statue stats translate directly into combat power. That is the counterintuitive part of the whole path: the one-star dungeon is a leveling tool early and an achievement farm later, and neither use involves farming it for drops. The drops are incidental. The pity box and the statue are the actual rewards.

When skipping Draupnir is the right move

There is a competing school of thought, and it comes from players who have already cleared the early milestones. One early-access guide states it bluntly: skip Drop Near entirely and save your Odell energy for Vakron. The argument is that Draupnir’s item level 54 gear becomes obsolete within days, and every energy point spent there is one not spent on the two-star bracket that will actually carry you into the 2000s.

This advice is correct for players who can reach 1400 from quest rewards, Clash runes, belt and amulet morphs, and Deva boards alone. It is wrong for players sitting at 900 or 1000 who need guaranteed pieces. If you have not completed the regional quests that grant accessories, or your belt and amulet are still green, the Draupnir pity box is a faster and cheaper gear score source than any two-star dungeon you cannot access yet.

The deciding factor is your current gap to the 1400 gate. If it is under 150 points, skip the one-star grind and close the gap with runes and boards. If it is over 300, Draupnir exploration is the answer. There is no scenario where conquest-mode one-star farming makes sense before 1400.

The transfer trick that makes old gear valuable

The reason skipping Draupnir is not wasteful is the substance morph system. Old yellow gear, including the item level 54 pieces from one-star dungeons, converts into transfer stones. Those stones let you move an enhancement level and its soul binding from an old item to a new one at no durability cost and no loss of progress.

The practical effect: that Draupnir guard you pushed to +10 on day one becomes the fuel for your Vakron guard at 1600. The enhancement, the mana stones, and the soul-bound stats all transfer. Players who dismantle old gear instead of transferring it are throwing away the single most expensive part of the upgrade, the enhancement level itself.

This also changes how you should treat soul binding. Because soul binding transfers with the item, binding a strong stat on a one-star piece and carrying it forward is a legitimate strategy. It costs less to roll a one-star item than a two-star item, and the result survives the transfer. Players who understand this are the ones whose combat power stays high while their gear score climbs, because they never pay for the same enhancement twice.

The dungeon path in AION 2 rewards restraint over ambition. The players who cross 2100 fastest are not the ones who run the hardest content on repeat. They are the ones who run the right content exactly as many times as the pity system demands, bank their energy for the next bracket, and let the transfer system convert their earlier work into momentum instead of waste.

The fastest way to raise your gear score at level 45 in AION 2 is to run easier dungeons, not harder ones.
