Grinding Gear Games has deployed update 3.28.0, titled ‘Mirage,’ for Path of Exile, marking one of the most significant endgame reworks since the Atlas of Worlds was introduced. The patch, which went live on March 7, 2026, fundamentally changes how players interact with maps, replaces the Awakened Support Gem system, and launches the new Mirage challenge league alongside a novel Ascendancy class for the Scion. This update represents a pivotal shift in POE’s core endgame loop, streamlining systems that have grown complex over multiple expansions while injecting new mechanics and rewards.
The Mirage Challenge League and Core Mechanics
Players are summoned to confront the Afarud, a rogue sect of the Faridun who have formed a pact with the necromancer Saresh. Their goal is to sap the energies of captured Djinn, and it falls to the exile to ally with the Maraketh Sekhema, Varashta, to thwart their plans. The league mechanic centers on encountering imprisoned Djinn in physical form, defeating their Afarud captors, and then entering an ‘Astral Realm’—a Mirage that Varashta conjures.
Before entering the Mirage, Varashta offers players a choice of three Wishes, each modifying the copied area in potent ways. These modifications can cause monsters to drop powerful loot, specific currency for enhancing gear and gems, special caches, or mysterious coins. The objective within the Mirage is to fight through astral hazards and mages to reach and shatter the tether holding the Djinn. The league offers Standard, Hardcore, and Solo Self-Found variations, with 40 new challenges and the Orb Regalia Armour Set as rewards.
Reliquarian Ascendancy and New Skill Gems
A headline feature is the introduction of the Reliquarian Ascendancy class for the Scion. Its Notable Passive Skills are designed to borrow powers from Unique items found throughout Wraeclast, with a key twist: these Notables will change with each challenge league. Consequently, they will not be available as outcomes from Forbidden Flame and Forbidden Flesh Unique Jewels, ensuring the Reliquarian’s power profile remains dynamic and season-specific.
The update phases out most Awakened Support Gems, replacing them with over 40 new Exceptional Support Gems found in the endgame. Accompanying these are new currency items: the Coin of Knowledge, Coin of Power, and Coin of Skill, which corrupt a level 20 Skill Gem to imbue it with a random valid Support effect of Intelligence, Strength, or Dexterity types, respectively.
A suite of new Strength/Intelligence skill gems has been added, focusing on holy-themed combat:
- Divine Blast: Projects a beam of holy light from your shield that implodes and then explodes outward.
- Holy Hammers: Slams the ground to call down a cascading hammer from above.
- Holy Strike: Infuses your weapon to summon undamageable Holy Armament minions that copy your attack.
- Shield of Light: Retaliates against a blocked hit with a sweeping wave of light.
Additionally, numerous Transfigured versions of existing skill gems have been introduced, such as Shockwave Totem of Authority, Static Strike of Gathering Lightning, and Kinetic Fusillade of Detonation, offering fresh ways to build characters.
Atlas of Worlds: A Ground-Up Rework
The most transformative changes lie in the Atlas and mapping system. The goal was an extensive overhaul without interfering with the beloved core experience, streamlining frustrating aspects. The fundamental change is that map items are no longer tied to a specific Map Area. Instead of finding a ‘Tier 10 Mesa Map,’ players now find a generic ‘Tier 10 Map.’ To run a specific map, players locate that area on their Atlas, place the generic map item into the Map Device, and activate it for that location.
This liberated map can then drop a higher-tier generic map, which can be used to run the same area or a new one. The Atlas structure itself has changed, beginning exploration at the center with Voidstone slots in each corner. All endgame content accessible via the Map Device is now physically present on the Atlas, revealed by exploring the fog of war.
Shaped Regions and the New Endgame Loop
Eagon, determined to stop Zana from severing the Atlas’s threads, employs new Arcane Astrolabes. Using an Astrolabe on a Map manifests a Shaped Region affecting many maps in that Atlas quadrant. Different Astrolabes apply different Shaped Region types. Completing the special content added by the Astrolabe removes the Shaped Region’s influence, applying an additional modifier to every other map remaining in the region. Successfully clearing a region grants access to one of four Memory Vaults, each associated with a specific Atlas quadrant and offering powerful targeted rewards.
The Favoured Map system has been removed, as players can now run any map with a generic map item. The Voidstone system has been adjusted: the Decayed Voidstone now comes from killing both the Shaper and the Elder (or Uber Elder), a Voidstone is received from both the Searing Exarch and the Eater of Worlds, and a new fourth Voidstone is obtained from killing the Incarnation of Dread. Each Voidstone now upgrades the minimum Map Tier in its quadrant to 16, causes maps there to drop one tier higher, converts lower-tier maps to Gold, and grants a special global bonus.
Significant System Adjustments and Removals
Major legacy systems have been altered or removed. Tier 17 Maps are now Nightmare Maps. Kirac no longer offers Atlas Missions, and related Atlas passives have been removed. Cartographer’s Chisels can no longer be obtained, and Map Device crafting options are gone, with the lost content and loot compensated elsewhere. The quality bonus on maps has been halved, and many Scarabs have been reworked or rebalanced.
Unique Maps now grant Atlas Skill Points (1 per map, up to 10 total), and the remaining points have been redistributed, allowing players to earn more total points than before. A new catch-up system for Standard league players automatically completes lower-tier Atlas nodes if they have previously acquired any Voidstones.
League Integration: Keepers of the Flame Goes Core, Harbinger Removed
The Keepers of the Flame league mechanics have been added to the core game. Players first encounter Ailith in Act 6, and Breach Hives and Unstable Breaches spawn from that point onward. The system has been simplified: Breachstones are now non-functional, exchanged for Hivebrain Glands that open portals directly to a Hive Colony. The Genesis Tree is now fully grown by default, and the resource ‘Graftblood’ has been renamed to ‘Hiveblood.’ New Atlas keystones, ‘Dimensional Foothold’ and ‘Enemy at the Gates,’ allow players to force Breach encounters to be either Hives or Unstable Breaches.
Conversely, the Harbinger league has been removed as a core mechanic. Fracturing Orbs and Ancient Orbs have been added to the core drop pool, while Engineer’s Orbs, Harbinger’s Orbs, Orbs of Horizon, and related shards and currency scrolls have been removed. All Harbinger-related Atlas passives and scarabs are gone, with maps that had harbinger implicits now containing additional Tormented Spirits instead.
Widespread Balance Changes and Updates
The patch includes extensive balance adjustments across many game systems. The Templar’s starting skill is now Holy Strike with Hallow Support. Intelligence now grants 1% increased Maximum Energy Shield per 10 Intelligence (down from per 5). All sources of ‘reduced Reflected Damage Taken’ have been replaced with ‘% of Damage Cannot be Reflected.’
Multiple Ascendancy classes have received tweaks. The Guardian’s Sentinel of Radiance is now a permanent minion, the Chieftain’s Hinekora, Death’s Fury explosion chance is doubled to 10%, and the Assassin and Ascendant now have full ‘Damage Cannot be Reflected’ instead of just from Critical Strikes. Numerous skill gems, from Absolution and Penance Brand to Storm Brand and Winter Orb, have received numerical buffs or functionality changes.
A host of Unique items have been rebalanced, including Bino’s Kitchen Knife, Bloodseeker, Essentia Sanguis, Lioneye’s Glare, and The Pledge of Hands. The vendor recipe for a full set of influenced items now returns an Exalted Orb. Currency items now account for a significantly larger portion of dropped items, while non-Unique Equipment is approximately 6% less common.
The update also integrates numerous quality-of-life improvements, such as Ritual completion notifications, better Currency Exchange interfaces, controller support enhancements, and a vast list of bug fixes addressing issues from skill interactions to boss fight mechanics.
The 3.28 ‘Mirage’ update demonstrates Grinding Gear Games’ continued commitment to revitalizing Path of Exile’s foundational systems. By decoupling map items from specific locations, the developers have introduced unprecedented flexibility into the endgame grind. Coupled with the league-specific Reliquarian Ascendancy, the replacement of the Awakened Gem system, and the careful curation of core league content, this patch sets a new trajectory for the game’s evolution, emphasizing player choice and reducing friction without diminishing depth. For veterans and newcomers alike, the Atlas has been reshaped into a more intuitive yet equally vast playground for infinite experimentation.
