China Life Insurance Company Ltd. has announced a substantial increase in its annual net profit, driven by a standout performance from its investment portfolio and a strategic evolution of its product mix. The company’s financial results for 2025 reveal a significant leap in profitability and a steady expansion of its premium base, reinforcing its dominant position in the world’s largest life insurance market.

Financial Results Show Robust Growth Across Key Metrics

The insurer reported net profit attributable to shareholders of 154.08 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately $21.2 billion. This figure represents a striking year-on-year increase of 44.1%. Alongside this profit surge, China Life’s total premium income grew steadily by 8.7% to reach 729.9 billion yuan, indicating sustained demand for its insurance offerings despite broader economic fluctuations.

Investment Performance Emerges as Primary Profit Driver

A central pillar of the company’s success was its investment activity. Total investment income soared by 25.8% to 387.7 billion yuan. China Life achieved an investment yield of 6.09%, one of its strongest results in recent years. This performance was underpinned by a more active asset allocation strategy, as detailed by company leadership.

Strategic Shift Toward Equities and Value-Driven Products

Vice-President Liu Hui attributed part of the investment success to an increased exposure to equities. The company’s publicly traded equity investments surpassed 1.2 trillion yuan, a strategic move that capitalized on favorable market conditions. Simultaneously, China Life accelerated a strategic transition in its product portfolio, shifting focus toward participating and market-linked policies.

New Business Value Growth Signals Strategic Success

This dual focus on investment acumen and product innovation directly fueled growth in a critical long-term metric: new business value. This indicator, which estimates the profitability of new policies sold, increased by 35.7% to 45.75 billion yuan. The company noted this as its fastest growth rate since 2017, underscoring the effectiveness of its pivot toward higher-quality, value-driven business lines.

Balance Sheet Strength and Market Leadership Reinforced

China Life’s financial foundation strengthened considerably over the period. Total assets increased to 7.59 trillion yuan, with investment assets specifically reaching 7.42 trillion yuan. The company’s embedded value, a key measure of long-term profitability and a core valuation metric for life insurers, rose to 1.47 trillion yuan.

Solvency Ratios Exceed Regulatory Requirements

The insurer also demonstrated robust capital strength, a crucial factor for policyholder security and regulatory compliance. Its core solvency ratio stood at 128.77%, while its comprehensive solvency ratio was reported at 174.01%. Both figures comfortably exceed the minimum requirements set by Chinese regulators, providing a buffer against market volatility and underwriting risks.

Chairman Cai Xiliang highlighted the company’s overall progress, pointing to strengthened growth momentum, enhanced operational resilience, and expanded capabilities in customer protection. The results illustrate a successful model where disciplined investment management is synergistically paired with customer-centric product innovation. This approach not only delivers immediate shareholder returns but also builds a more sustainable and valuable business poised for continued leadership in an evolving insurance landscape.
