Why the Hammer Is Wrong for Control Resonant’s Artist Boss

Ditching the hammer for the drill cuts your fight time in half against Control Resonant's Artist boss. Discover the proven strategy.

The Artist boss is weak to sharp damage, making the drill 1.5x more effective than the hammer.
Highlights
  • The Artist boss has no armor and moves too fast for the hammer's slow windup.
  • Drill's continuous attack builds stagger faster because you can move and dodge while attacking.
  • Using the drill instead of the hammer reduces the fight by two phases due to the dominance buff.

Every guide tells you the same thing about the Artist Resonant in Control Resonant: pick the hammer (Crush) as your secondary weapon. It builds stagger fast, it breaks armor, it stun-locks enemies. For the first boss, that’s the play.

It’s not.

The Artist doesn't have armor.

The Artist doesn’t have armor. It doesn’t stand still long enough for a hammer’s windup. And that advice, repeated across forums and videos, sends players into a fight that drags twice as long as it needs to.

What the Artist Actually Does

The Artist – the Medusa-headed entity you fight in the prologue – hurls cars, rocks, and debris. It circles you, teleports, and punishes slow weapons. Its vulnerability windows are short. Landing a fully charged hammer swing takes about 1.2 seconds. That’s enough time for the boss to toss a car at your face and cancel your attack.

The common advice assumes Crush is universally optimal because it deals the highest falter (stagger) damage per hit. That’s true against stationary enemies or those with armor. It’s false against a boss that won’t cooperate.

The Better Pick: Drill Secondary Form

Drill is the secondary weapon most players overlook. It deals sharp damage, which is neutral against most enemies, but its real advantage is the hold attack. Press and hold the secondary attack button, and Dylan drills forward continuously, landing multiple hits per second. Each hit builds falter incrementally. Over a three-second hold, you’ll amass roughly the same stagger as a single hammer swing – but you can move while doing it.

You can dodge mid-drill. You can start the hold, see a rock incoming, dodge roll, and the drill continues. The hammer requires you to commit to the full animation. Against the Artist, mobility matters more than peak damage.

The Aggressive Strategy Most Guides Miss

Standard advice says “dodge and wait for openings.” That doubles your fight time. Instead, use strike (your primary form) for light combos to build power, then switch to drill for sustained pressure. The Artist’s falter meter fills noticeably faster under continuous drill hits than it does from three hammer swings you miss half of.

Once the falter bar is full, execute the Artist for the dominance buff. That extra 100% damage on your next attacks ends the fight two phases earlier than playing passive.

What About the Obstacle Doors?

The hammer’s selling point is breaking barred doors and red boxes. You can still do that – just switch back to Crush later. The Artist won’t respect your weapon choice, but the environment will. Unlocking Crush costs two living shards, and you can swap loadouts mid-combat (just not mid-attack). Keep drill equipped for the boss, switch to hammer afterward for exploration.

One Stat That Most Advice Forgets

The Artist is weak to sharp damage. Drill deals sharp damage. Hammer deals blunt damage. The damage type modifier is about 1.5x to 2x depending on the enemy’s resistances. So not only is drill safer, it also hits harder against this specific boss. Every guide that tells you to “use the hammer” ignores this.

When the Hammer Does Work

After the Artist fight, you’ll face the Factory Resonant. That boss has a thick armor bar. Bring the hammer then. But not now.
