Two numbers sit under your character in AION 2, and only one of them gets you into dungeons. The larger one, item level, is the gatekeeper everyone grinds. The blue one, combat power, decides whether you actually contribute. Soul binding and mana stones feed both, but they feed combat power in ways the item level treadmill hides.
In AION 2, the fastest way to raise combat power is to soul-bind offensive rolls on your weapon, guard, and bracelets, preferring attack speed and attack over critical hit, and to socket mana stones for color before stats, stopping at two green rolls per piece. Combat power reflects roll quality; item level mostly reflects socket count and enhancement. Chasing the wrong one costs you days.
Soul binding is the only system where you actively pick the combat power outcome.
Gear Score Opens Doors. Combat Power Makes You Useful.
At level 45 you land around 700 gear score. Every guide tells you to push that to 1,000, then 1,400, then 1,600. That advice is correct, and it is also incomplete. The item level thresholds unlock content. Combat power is what makes that content die at a reasonable speed, and it is the number group leaders quote when they ask for 90k or 100k combat power in late endgame.
The two numbers are interconnected, but not in the way the UI suggests. Enhancement adds item level and a flat attack and defense chunk to the slot. Mana stones add item level based on their color tier, then combat power based on the stat they carry. Soul binding is the only system where you actively pick the combat power outcome. That makes it the highest-leverage re-roll in the game.
The Stat Hierarchy Nobody Writes Down
Every soul bind attempt rerolls the perks on a piece. The rolls are not equal. Attack speed provides a materially larger combat power boot than critical hit on the same slot. The limited global test made this obvious, and the Korean and Taiwan parses back it up. If you are choosing between a critical hit roll and an attack speed roll on a weapon, take attack speed almost every time.
Across the early-access parses, one favorable soul bind roll on a weapon delivers more combat power than three enhancement levels on the same slot. That gap is why top players stop side-grade gear at +10 and pour stones into rolls instead. Enhancement has a ceiling you can feel. Soul binding keeps paying.
The order of operations matters more than the order of stats. Bind the weapon first, then the guard, then the bracelets. Those three slots carry the bulk of your offensive combat power because they roll attack-related lines. Armor pieces are a distant fourth, and only worth attention once your green belt and amulet have moved to blue.
Bracelets are the exception to the rule. The MSQ abyss bracelet is the first slot worth your only superior mana stone or soul stone. It follows you for months. Two yellow rolls on that item produce more gear score than greens or blues, and the combat power delta is wider still. Save your one superior stone for it. Do not spend it on a Draupnir piece you will feed into a transfer in three days.
Two Greens Is the Breakpoint. Stop There.
Early socketing advice reads like a contradiction: put stones on everything, but do not overspend. The resolution is that each piece wants exactly two green rolls, and no more.
White stones socketed into an early piece contribute a single item level point each. Greens contribute two. The difference sounds small until you multiply it across eight gear slots. Two greens per piece is the efficient stopping point because it guarantees you are not burning gold on gear that will be replaced. On temporary gear, the correct upgrade path is lesser and intermediate stones, not superior ones.
When you hit a green roll, stop on that socket. Do not keep re-rolling for the perfect stat on a level 54 item. The perfect stat on an item level 41 piece is still an item level 41 piece. Your stones are better spent later, when crafted gear at 94 and 102 item level starts eating your inventory.
The Transfer System Is the Reason You Bind Early
Here is where most players waste an entire set of soul stones. They obtain a new piece of yellow gear, then dismantle the old piece, and the rolls they paid for vanish.
Substance morph and the transfer system exist to prevent that. Bad yellow gear converts into transfer crystals. Those crystals move the enhancement level and every soul bind from an old piece to a new one. Your +10 and your hard-won rolls carry over automatically. One crystal for same-level transfers, two for higher-level ones.
That changes the whole strategy around binding. Bind early. Bind gear you know you will replace. The transfer system makes the bind permanent across your next three gear swaps. Players who wait until they have “final” gear to soul bind are paying for the same roll four times.
World bosses feed this loop. The 12-hour spawns and the field bosses drop yellow trash gear constantly. That gear is not vendor fodder. It is transfer crystal material. Converting it is how top players keep their combat power intact through the Vakron and Ferocious Horn gear swaps without ever re-rolling.
Where Combat Power Hides Beyond Stones
Mana stones and soul binds cover maybe half of your combat power ceiling. Stigmas are the other giant chunk. Stigma shards purchased from the trade shop, nightmare clears, and the Shugo Festival funnel directly into combat power because unlocking and leveling stigmas provides a massive flat boost. When your item level is comfortable, stigma shards are the correct spend over more Deianon crystals.
Two systems look like cosmetics and are not. The skin combine feature, where you dismantle weapon skins and unlock weapons for your main, grants damage for that specific weapon type. Titles from challenge bosses and war bosses grant stats just by being owned. Neither shows up in a tooltip you will notice, and both stack.
Pet progression also touches combat power. The Cogney pet line grants Might, a stat worth maxing early. Global capped pet progression below the Korean version, so treat level three as the ceiling and do not chase breakpoints from overseas guides.
What Not to Copy From Korean and Taiwan
The overseas players spent months mapping these systems. Their general strategy holds. Their exact numbers do not.
Global launched on a modified season one setup. Progression enhancements, pet levels, skill resources, reward values, and class balance have all been adjusted. A Korean guide telling you to hit a specific enhancement breakpoint or pet level will actively mislead you. The global client already capped pet progression at level three. Use the overseas guides to find the traps, not to copy the breakpoints.
That applies to soul binding and mana stones more than anything else. The stat hierarchy is stable across versions, but the resource economy is not. The cost of re-rolls and the availability of stones differ. Spend like the global economy is what it is, not like the Korean one was nine months ago.
The Switch Point: Item Level Stops Mattering at 2,100
Everything up to 1,400 gear score is about unlocking two-star dungeons. Everything up to 1,600 is about expeditions and the first Arcana cards. From 1,600 to 1,800 is green Arcana cards at 40 points each. Past 2,100, the script flips. Item level stops being the bottleneck. Combat power does.
That is the moment to re-tune every piece. The green and white mana stones from your early grind become the weak link. The blue Arcana cards cap out. The soul binds you settled for during the item level push, the critical hit rolls and the block lines, start costing you group invites.
When that happens, the fix is surgical, not systemic. Replace one slot at a time, starting with the weapon and guard. Move the transfer, re-roll the bind, socket the better stone, move on. The whole re-tune is roughly the work of a week if you have been banking stones instead of churning them.
The Resource Math Most Players Get Backwards
The scarce resource in this system is not kinah and it is not enhancement stones. It is unbound soul stones. A transfer moves your rolls but consumes the crystals. The stones you spent to get two greens on a piece of gear are gone when that gear is gone, and the new piece starts with empty sockets. Banking transfer crystals and unbound stones ahead of a gear tier jump is what separates a smooth 2,100 transition from a two-week stall.
The counterintuitive corollary: do not bind the green belt and amulet upgrade path. Those pieces eat enhancement stones at a brutal rate, and the item level bump from green to blue is smaller than the same resources spent on bracelets or the weapon. The rifts that spawn every three hours into enemy territory are the best enhancement stone source in the game for exactly this reason. Spend a few rift runs funneling stones into the belt and amulet to hit the next gear score threshold, then stop. Everything beyond that belongs to the weapon and bracelets.
