The latest major update for Borderlands 4, patch 1.050, has been deployed across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. This substantial content drop, officially designated version 1.050.000, introduces the first paid story expansion alongside a significant suite of free additions and technical improvements aimed at refining the core gameplay experience and expanding long-term engagement.
Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned Headlines New Content
Central to this update is the release of Story Pack 1, titled “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned.” This expansion transports players to a new hostile environment, The Whispering Glacier, where they ally with Ellie, the mechanic daughter of the iconic Moxxi, to confront a cosmic threat emanating from an alien monolith. The pack is designed for characters who have reached at least level 13 and have completed the “A Lot to Process” mission in the Fadefields, though a new feature allows players to create a character that starts directly within this content at the appropriate level.
Exploring the Whispering Glacier
The new zone is packed with fresh content designed to offer dozens of hours of additional play. Players can expect new story and side missions, dynamic world events like “Ice Fishing” and “Nightmare Rift,” and a host of collectibles including Dahl Caches, Eldritch Phonograph pieces, and Vault of the Damned Symbols. The expansion also introduces two new major boss encounters, 16 minibosses, and entirely new enemy types to challenge seasoned Vault Hunters.
A Wealth of New Gear and Cosmetics
Accompanying the new story is a massive injection of loot. The update adds numerous new Legendary items across all manufacturer brands, including weapons like the Vladof assault rifle “Laser Cutter,” the Torgue shotgun “Unstable Kor,” and the Maliwan shield “Elpis Star.” Most notably, Story Pack 1 introduces a new tier of ultra-rare Pearlescent weapons, such as the Order assault rifle “Crow-funded” and a secret Ripper shotgun. Twenty-eight new cosmetic items, including heads, skins for all Vault Hunters and the new character, weapon skins, vehicle skins, and ECHO-4 drone customizations, provide ample opportunity for personalization.
Introducing C4SH the Rogue
Patch 1.050 also unveils the first of two new playable Vault Hunters arriving via paid Story Packs. C4SH the Rogue is a sentient CasinoBot who, after winning a magical deck of cards in a high-stakes game, has become obsessed with the chaos of chance. His gameplay revolves around leveraging this deck to gain unpredictable eldritch boons, rewarding high-risk playstyles. C4SH is available for use across the entirety of Borderlands 4’s content, offering a completely fresh narrative perspective and skill set.
Free Content and Core System Enhancements
Significantly, a large portion of the update is available to all Borderlands 4 players at no additional cost. The most anticipated of these free additions is a ten-level increase to the maximum level cap, raising it from 50 to 60. This allows for deeper character specialization and more powerful builds across the entire roster of Vault Hunters.
Shared Character Progression Implemented
A major quality-of-life and progression overhaul arrives with the introduction of Shared Character Progression. This system automatically combines account-wide progress for collectibles, completed activities, Big Map exploration, SDU tokens, Vault Powers, and vehicle unlocks across all characters. Players no longer need to re-find every collectible on alternate characters, though campaign progress and fast travel point usage remain character-specific. The feature is designed to respect individual exploration in multiplayer and is persistent even if all character saves are deleted.
Comprehensive Gameplay Fixes and Refinements
Beyond new content, patch 1.050 addresses a vast array of player-reported issues and polishes existing gameplay systems. The update includes targeted fixes for the previously released “Bounty Pack 2: Legend of the Stone Demon,” resolving problems where players could exploit safe spots during boss fights, enemies would get stuck on geometry, or visual effects would fail to display correctly.
Vault Hunter and Gear Balancing
Each Vault Hunter receives specific tuning and bug fixes. For example, Harlowe the Gravitar’s Neutral Capture augment now functions correctly with the “Break the Ice” skill, while Rafa the Exo-Soldier’s Peacebreaker Cannons fire faster as intended when specced into “Deft Hands.” Gear-specific issues have also been resolved, ensuring items like the Tediore “Chuck” assault rifle properly track challenge progress and that Pearlescent item loot beams are no longer obscured by the environment.
Technical Performance and User Experience
The patch notes detail extensive improvements to stability, optimization, and matchmaking logic. A critical change ensures that matchmaking will now only group players who own the same downloadable content, preventing disconnections and returns to the main menu due to content mismatches. Enhancements to cloud save handling, UI menus, loading screen tips, and Photo Mode functionality round out a comprehensive effort to smooth the player experience. Photo Mode, in particular, sees major upgrades, with better control over visual effects, character visibility, and depth-of-field settings for capturing the perfect action shot.
While this update resolves many issues noted by the community since launch, developer Gearbox Software has indicated that further fixes and adjustments are already planned for a subsequent update, version 1.060. For now, players can dive into the frostbitten dangers of The Whispering Glacier, experiment with C4SH’s high-risk gameplay, and push their existing characters to new heights with the increased level cap and shared progression systems, marking one of the most significant post-launch evolutions for Borderlands 4 to date.
