The landscape of Tamriel shifts dramatically with the arrival of The Elder Scrolls Online’s Update 49, known as patch 2.82 on consoles. This comprehensive overhaul, launching under the banner of Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, introduces a formidable new event zone, completely reimagines player progression by replacing the Endeavors system, and delivers sweeping quality-of-life improvements alongside a significant combat refresh for the Dragonknight class. This update represents one of the most substantial foundational changes to the MMORPG since its launch, fundamentally altering how players engage with both new and long-established content.
The Night Market: A Daedric Power Struggle in Fargrave
At the heart of Season Zero lies the Night Market, a dynamic and perilous new event zone opening in Fargrave. Following the mysterious disappearance of its former overseer, this once-restricted planar trade hub has descended into chaos, with three rival factions vying for control. Players are now invited to navigate this treacherous district, pledge allegiance to a patron, and participate in its dangerous economy. Unlike standard zones, the Night Market is designed with increased difficulty, encouraging cooperation to overcome its unique challenges.
Three Factions Vie for Control
The conflict within the Night Market is driven by three distinct factions, each with its own philosophy and methods. The Glittering Goad, led by the patron Tachien, operates as a ruthless meritocracy built on auctioneering and wealth; success here is guaranteed—for a price. In stark contrast, The Ruckus, under Kharakhal Moon-Eye, seeks control through brute strength and enforced “protection,” its district now shrouded in palpable grief and darkness. The most clandestine of the three, the Thousand Eyes, led by Molto the Whisperer, comprises countless small, overlooked entities that gather power through information and subtle collective action.
Districts, Activities, and Substantial Rewards
The zone is divided into three thematically distinct districts: the wind-scoured Parch, the creature-infested Skittering Precinct, and the shadowy Sorrow’s Friend. Activities range from battling new boss types—Faceted, Brazen, Argent, and Calamitous creatures—to participating in daring street races, solving puzzles called Oddities, and engaging in public skirmishes. The pinnacle of group content is the 12-player trial, The Opulent Ordeal, designed to test coordination and skill at the highest level.
Rewards for participation are extensive. Players earn Favor with their chosen faction to unlock vendor purchases, and can acquire powerful stackable Boons. A new home, the Night’s Den, is earned via an introductory quest and provides direct access to the Market. The update adds 61 new achievements, awarding six titles and three unique dyes, alongside collectible Mementos, furnishings, and twelve new Dragonknight Skill Styles for masters of the class.
Tamriel Tomes: A New Battle Pass System Replaces Endeavors
Perhaps the most significant systemic change in Update 49 is the introduction of Tamriel Tomes, a battle pass-style progression system that completely replaces the previous Endeavors and Daily Login Rewards. Launching with the season, a new Tome will be available each season, featuring both a Free and a Premium track. The Free Track offers cosmetics, the new Trade Bar currency, and gameplay items, while the Premium Track provides additional permanent account unlocks.
Progression Through Challenges and the New Economy
Progression is driven by a Challenge System. Players complete five rerollable Weekly Challenges and larger, non-rerollable Seasonal Challenges to earn Tome Points, which unlock pages of rewards. A catch-up mechanic allows up to 12 weekly challenges to accumulate. The system introduces Trade Bars as a new primary currency, earned from Tamriel Tomes, in-game events, and Vengeance Campaigns. All existing Event Tickets have been automatically converted at a rate of 1 Ticket to 100 Trade Bars. These bars are spent at the new Gold Coast Bazaar, a permanent, gameplay-currency-driven store within the Crown Store UI featuring mounts, pets, and items previously tied to Golden Pursuits and promotions.
Combat Refresh: Dragonknight and Two-Handed Overhauls
Update 49 delivers a comprehensive combat refresh focused on the Dragonknight class and the Two-Handed skill line. Every ability across the Ardent Flame, Draconic Power, and Earthen Heart skill lines has received attention, ranging from modernized visual effects and animations to substantive mechanical changes aimed at improving flow and viability.
Key Dragonknight Changes
Notable adjustments include the Dragonknight Standard now providing a powerful group buff, Lava Whip receiving easier Empowered stack generation and a 40% damage increase, and Fiery Breath being reworked to restore resources over time. Defensive tools like Spiked Armor have seen their damage doubled, and Dragon Blood now scales with Max Health for better tanking synergy. The Draconic Power ultimate, Dragon Leap, has been modernized for smoother movement and consistent crowd control.
Two-Handed Skill Adjustments
The Two-Handed line sees durations extended on key abilities like Berserker Strike and Momentum, while Uppercut’s cast time has been reduced to 500ms for more responsive gameplay. These changes, coupled with enhanced audio and visual feedback, are designed to make the weapon line feel more impactful and dynamic in both PvE and PvP scenarios. A limited-time Skill Catch-Up Event is active to help players rapidly rank up these updated abilities.
Expansive Player Experience and Quality of Life Improvements
Beyond new content and combat updates, ESO Update 49 introduces a staggering array of quality-of-life enhancements. Many long-requested features have been implemented, fundamentally reducing friction in daily gameplay.
Account-Wide Unlocks and Reduced Costs
Outfit Slots are now account-wide, with a maximum of ten slots, and previously purchased slots are cumulative. Guild reputation can be displayed without needing a tabard equipped. The gold cost for bag and bank upgrades has been reduced by 50%, and Crown costs for these upgrades have also been lowered. Sixteen mounts previously available only for Crowns can now be purchased with gold, with existing gold mounts reduced to 25,000 gold. Crafting research is now 50% faster, with the maximum research time reduced from 30 to 10 days.
Streamlined Systems and Free Respecs
Players can now respec their skills and attributes for free directly from the UI, subject to a small cooldown. Treasure Maps now stack up to 200 and are consumed only when a chest is opened. The Hide Armor feature is now free for gloves, boots, belts, pants, and chest pieces. Mount training allows for three upgrades per session at stables. For Vampires and Werewolves, discoverable shrines have been added, cure costs reduced, and Crown Store cures now cost 0 Crowns.
ESO+ Enhanced Perks and Base Game Expansion
The value of an ESO Plus membership has been significantly increased. New seasonal benefits include a 10% boost to Tome Point gains from challenges, plus a monthly Cache of Tome Points and a Premium Tome Token. Subscribers also see their Transmute Crystal cap tripled to 3,000, enjoy doubled Antiquities lead timers, receive furnishing limit increases, and now have the Solstice DLC (both Western and Eastern) included in the membership. Furthermore, the Warden class and the Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood DLCs are now granted for free to all players upon first login after the update.
Housing, PvP, and a Multitude of Fixes
The update adds new homes, including the seaside Buccaneer Bay and the Night’s Den earned in the event zone, alongside 55 new furnishings. In PvP, Cyrodiil receives a movement speed bonus on roads while out of combat, and keep courtyards have been expanded to prevent gatehouse exploits. Cross-campaign queueing is now enabled. Numerous fixes have been applied across zones, quests, item sets like Ring of the Pale Order, and UI elements, addressing a wide range of legacy issues and bugs reported by the community.
With the launch of Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, The Elder Scrolls Online embarks on a new chapter defined by player agency—from choosing a side in the volatile Night Market to navigating a more rewarding and streamlined progression path via Tamriel Tomes. The extensive refinements to combat, systems, and quality of life demonstrate a clear commitment to refining the core experience for both new arrivals and veteran adventurers, setting a robust foundation for the stories and struggles yet to unfold across the ever-evolving world of Tamriel.
